GLEE WHIZ! LATEST COLLECTION TO BOW #1 Stones, Black Keys, Nas & Damian Marley, Band of Horses All Eye Big Debuts
May 19, 2010
Less than a month after topping the charts with The Power of Madonna, Columbia’s fourth, and latest Glee Cast album, Showstoppers, will debut at #1 on next week’s HITS sales chart, sporting a total that could range between 110-120k. That’s based on one-day sales numbers crunched by our crack (-addled) team of retail experts surveying every store whose owner wasn’t too busy plying our own Mark Pearson with cocktails at last week’s NARM convention in Chicago.
The Rolling Stones’ much-ballyhooed UMe/Universal Republic deluxe reissue of their 1972 classic, Exile on Main St., is riding a massive wave of publicity and “making of” features to a #2 bow, with a nice total of 65-70k.
Nonesuch critical darlings The Black Keys’ new album, Brothers, its eighth in a career which started in 2002, looks headed for 55-60k, which would be the best of their career for the QPrime-managed Akron duo of vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer/ producer Patrick Carney.
Universal Republic’s Nas and Damian Marley collaboration, Distant Relatives, could do as much as 45-50k.
Right behind it is Fat Possum/Columbia Americana alternarockers Band of Horses, who have relocated from Seattle back to their native South Carolina for Infinite Arms, their major label debut, which is set for a robust 40-45k in its first week.
Virgin’s LCD Soundsystem release their much-anticipated third album, This Is Happening, which is happening to the tune of 28-32k in sales.
The new album from Blacksmith/Rawkus/WB conscious rap duo Talib Kweli +Hi-Tek, Revolutions Per Minute, should bow with 22-25k.
Finally, highly touted Bad Boy diva Janelle Monae’s The ArchAndroid is on track for between 15-18k. The Atlanta-based singer, mentored by OutKast’s Big Boi and signed by Puffy Combs, has been compared to Toni Morrisson, Mad Max, Prince and Parliament.
The market was down 12% vs. last week, down 9% vs. same week last year and still down 10% year to date. You may now return to figuring out if that Greyson Chance dude playing the Lady Gaga song on YouTube is real or just a figment of our collective imagination.

Great numbers for LCD Soundsystem, Black Keys & Band Of Horses. And thank you, Glee for not making this a completely horrible week for sales again!

Glee has saved this week in terms of the #1's total, but it will still be horrible for the rest of the chart. Still, nice numbers for Glee.

Does Glee release an album every week? But they always sell, so good for them.

Carole King just missed making this list. "Tapestry" was a #1 album in 1971, and her follow-up album "Music" hit #1 on New Year's Day 1972.

Rolling Stones, 'Glee' Battle It Out For No. 1 On Billboard 200
May 20, 2010 - Retail
By Keith Caulfield, L.A.
Its "Glee" versus the Glimmer Twins on next week's Billboard 200 albums chart.
Industry gurus seem to think the "Glee: Showstoppers" soundtrack will debut at No. 1, selling perhaps 80,000 to 100,000 copies by week's end on May 23. The cast of "Glee" notched its first No. 1 recently with "The Power of Madonna," when that seven-song mini-album arrived in the penthouse with 98,000. "Showstoppers" is the third proper full-length soundtrack from the hit Fox TV show. The first two volumes arrived in quick succession last November and December.
But another album looking for a high placement on the Billboard 200 next week is the Rolling Stones' lavish reissue of its 1972 album "Exile on Main Street." There's a chance that the set -- which spent four weeks at No. 1 on the chart that year -- could give the "Glee" album a run for its money for No. 1 next week.
Other sets expected to debut high on the Billboard 200 next week include Black Keys' "Brothers," Band of Horses' "Infinite Arms," Nas and Damian Marley's "Distant Relatives" and LCD Soundsystem's "This Is Happening."
On the Digital Songs chart, watch for Miley Cyrus' new single "Can't Be Tamed" to make a splashy entrance very high on the tally. A top five debut seems to be possible, with a top three entry likely.

Great chart this week - I hope the Black Keys make top 3 & Band Of Horses & LCD Soundsystem both make top 10. "Glee" will do much better than expected - I really hope they do make it to 130K!

Did the Madonna episode of Glee re-air? ??? For some reason, when people were buying the new release, they must've felt inclined to buy the other albums too. 50 34 GLEE CAST COLUMBIA 11,764 +28% GLEE: THE MUSIC, VOL. 1 -- 40 GLEE CAST COLUMBIA 11,085 -- GLEE: THE MUSIC, VOL. 2

GLEE SPOT Stones, Black Keys, Nas/Marley, Band of Horses and LCD Soundsystem Bow in Top 10 May 25, 2010 Columbia’s Glee franchise just keeps rolling along. The fourth volume of the popular Fox TV series, though it is technically Vol. 3, debuts at #1, making it the second to do so, following last month’s The Power of Madonna, with 138k in sales. It’s the second-highest first-week total ever for the series, with Glee Vol. 2 debuting at #3 with 173k last year, and Glee Vol. 1 bowing at #4 with 113k before that. This week, all four Glee soundtracks land in the Top 50, with Power of Madonna the big gainer, moving #45-20, +83%, Vol. 1 (#50-34, +28%) and Vol. 2 re-entering at #40. The UMe/Universal Republic deluxe re-release of the Rolling Stones’ classic 1972 album Exile on Main St is the week’s other big debut, bowing at #2 with 75k, a day after entering the U.K. charts at #1. UMe’s Exile Rarities, another collection, comes on the chart at #28. Glee and the Stones are just two of six newcomers in the Top 10, followed by Nonesuch garage-blues duo Black Keys (#3), Universal Republic’s Nas & Damian Marley (#5), Fat Possum/Columbia’s Band of Horses (#7) and Virgin/EMI’s LCD Soundsystem (#10). Last week’s chart-topper, Island/IDJMG’s Justin Bieber, drops to #4, with the other holdovers Capitol Nashville/EMI’s Lady Antebellum (#6), LaFace/JLG’s Usher (#8) and Columbia’s AC/DC Iron Man 2 soundtrack (#9). Other Top 50 entries go to WB’s Reflection Eternal: Talib Kweli (#19) and Bad Boy/ Atlantic R&B newcomer Janelle Monae (#21). Aside from the Glee soundtracks, the week’s other movers include J/RMG’s Alicia Keys (#41-33) and Roadrunner’s Nickelback (#43-37, +5%). Hitting retail this week and the chart next are Atlantic’s Stone Temple Pilots, Water Tower/New Line/Fontana’s Sex and the City 2 soundtrack, Asylum’s Cam’ron and Concord’s Leela James. Next Tuesday, Brushfire/Universal Republic’s eagerly anticipated Jack Johnson album hits stores, with heightened expectations that it could be the biggest first-week sales story of the year.
