Naturi Naughton on ‘Playboy Club’ cancellation: ‘Ridiculous’October 4, 2011 After just three episodes and very disappointing ratings, NBC has given “The Playboy Club” the pink slip. It becomes the first new fall show cancelled this season, despite the massive hype and controversy. On the show, Naturi Naughton played Bunny Brenda, one of the few African American actresses that was seen on weekly in the series. Naturi was very excited for fans to see the show (check out my interview with Naturi here), so when news broke today that NBC opted to can the show, it was no surprise that Naughton was more than a little disappointed. “RIDICULOUS,” tweeted Naughton on Twitter. If only all tweets could be this clear and succinct. Whether you loved or hated “The Playboy Club,” it allowed a black actress the opportunity to show off her acting chops on a major network—something most of the new fall shows have failed to do. In my interview with Naturi, we talked about this very fact. Ridiculous, indeed.

‘The Playboy Club’ canceled by NBC after only three episodesBY MIKE THOMAS Staff Reporter mthomas@suntimes.com Updated: October 4, 2011 10:47PM ‘RIDICULOUS.” That’s the short and simple tweet “The Playboy Club” actress Naturi Naughton posted not long after her fledgling NBC series was axed Tuesday after just three episodes and successive weeks of increasingly abysmal ratings. It was the first casualty of the fall TV season. Reruns of “Prime Suspect” will fill its Monday night slot until a newsmagazine hosted by NBC anchor Brian Williams takes it over Oct. 31. Two more “Playboy Club” episodes have been shot, and NBC wouldn’t say when or whether they will air. Production on a sixth episode was continuing on the soundstages of Cinespace Chicago on the West Side. The show’s creator, Chad Hodge, couldn’t be reached for comment. “A full-time series is a full-time employer, it’s a big spender, so it’s significant,” Chicago Film Office director Rich Moskal said of the cancellation. Had production continued through the end of the year, Moskal estimated, another $16 million (or roughly $2 million per episode) likely would have been pumped into the local economy. “It’s not like we’re losing the majority of what this year’s spend for local production will be,” Moskal said, “but it’s a hit.” Last year’s spending for Chicago film and television production totaled $161 million. Set in the early 1960s, when Playboy founder Hugh Hefner’s Chicago-based empire was expanding rapidly and his original club thrived on Walton, “The Playboy Club” focused on the upscale establishment’s famed “Bunnies,” sexual intrigue, mobsters and murder. Predictions of the somewhat controversial program’s quick demise had swirled since its weak debut in September. On Thursday, Deadline.com reported that “NBC won’t be pulling any new series this week, since NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt wants to give all freshmen more time to send a message to the creative community that he will give their shows on NBC every possible chance to succeed.” But Greenblatt is formerly of the cable world, where budgets are lower and patience for upstarts greater. On network television, bigger bucks often are on the line and survival is more precarious. “Wow. Tough day,” actress Laura Benanti [who played bunny mother Carol-Lynne on “Playboy”] tweeted Tuesday. “Best cast, best crew, we deserved more time.” David Krumholz, who played Playboy Club general manager Billy Rosen, also tweeted his elliptical dismay: “Insulated minds make bad decisions.”

Naturi Naughton Talks New Role In 'The Client List' & Life After 'The Playboy Club'Posted: 04/ 6/2012 4:59 pm Following her short-lived role as Playboy Bunny Brenda on NBC's drama series "The Playboy Club," Naturi Naughton has scored another television role on Lifetime's "The Client List." Based on the network's 2010 original film of the same name, the new series follows Jennifer Love Hewitt's character, Riley Parks, as she pursues a job at day spa in Texas. During a recent interview with The Huffington Post, the former 3LW singer and "Notorious" actress discussed starring opposite Love Hewitt, her thoughts on the abrupt cancellation of "The Playboy Club" and her aspiration for a music career similar to Whitney Houston's. What's the synopsis of the "Client List"?Jennifer Love Hewitt is starring in it, and it's essentially about her as a young mother who's kind of struggling, living alone with two kids. Her husband has left her as a single mom, so she somehow lands on this spa called The Rub, and it takes place in Belmont, Texas. So The Rub is where I work, and I come into play as one of the spa girls, Kendra. The spa gives "extras." So that's what everyone is talking about. It's an underground spa that no one assumes to be a place where these girls are giving "happy endings," and there's a lot of drama that goes along with that, too. So when you watch the show, it's not vulgar, it's not risqué, but it's definitely pushing the envelope a little bit so that people see what could be happening if a spa like this existed.Since it's based on Lifetime's 2010 television film, does the series pick up where the movie ended? It's taking the movie from its inception. The beginning of the series starts with Riley and her family. When you see the season premiere, you'll see that it's not the movie. It's just inspired by the same story and the same characters like Kendra. But it doesn't start from where the movie left off. It's a whole fresh new start, and it's a whole new story actually. All of the different scenes that we're shooting, none of them took place in the movie. It's just a more creative way to put it all in a TV series. With Loretta Devine playing the head of the spa, do you see any parallels between the on-screen chemistry that you had with Jenifer Lewis, who also portrayed a matriarch figure in "The Playboy Club"?I do a little bit. I mean it's different, but I definitely have been fortunate to work with such veterans like Jenifer Lewis and like Loretta Devine. The only thing that I would parallel is the older, matriarch figure. But Jenifer Lewis' character in "The Playboy Club" was a little different, and we didn't get a chance to have as much interaction as I had with Loretta on "The Client List." Loretta's character is hands-on in this show. She's checking on us in the spa, what not to do, and telling us to watch our backs. Her character, Georgia, owns the spa, so she's a boss with a tender side, and I love that about her character.Following the cancellation of "The Playboy Club," there were reports that the remaining episodes were possibly being picked up by another network. Do you know what the latest status is?Yeah, there was a lot of talk about that, I'm not sure. But what I do know is the rest of our season, I believe the studio may put it out. So what I think is that there will be a DVD release for the show. As of right now I'm pretty sure that they're not picking up the show for any other networks, but at least for the fans who did follow us -- even though we were cancelled after three episodes, we shot seven -- it would be really cool. And I watched them all and was like, "Dang!" It was so fun. We had a lot of interesting characters. Raphael Saadiq was in our next [fourth] episode, and then we had Javier Colon playing Ray Charles. So it was a good experience. And although it's done, I still look at it as a fond memory. When we last spoke there were rumors circulating of you possibly starring in the next X-Men film, and you mentioned that there were still some loose ends to tie up. Any updates? No updates. I mean, I can't say that's in my near future or happening. I kind of have to take work as it's available and as it comes. But I'm still open to the opportunity; I would love to do that. Of course that would be another avenue of my career that I haven't tapped into yet, so I'm all for it. I just know that my focus has to be on this series. And if that comes back around, of course I'm ready to do it and go for it.We also discussed the possibility of you returning to the studio this year for a new album. Is that still in your plans for 2012?Music is a part of my life. I actually talked to a couple of producer friends of mine. This year I'm hoping during my hiatus from the show I can get back in the studio. I have been writing actually and working on my own with music. I just haven't put it out there, and I'm not in a position to focus on that, because I want to give "The Client List" my all. I'm assuming by the end of this year I can have my down time to delve into the studio and get my music popping again. Because that's how I got into this business, so I will never let it go.
One of my biggest inspirations growing up was Whitney Houston, so I was devastated to hear about her passing. I'm from East Orange, New Jersey, and started singing at New Hope Baptist Church, so she was like my fellow Jersey girl. And ever since I was a little girl, I looked up to her and always said I would want to have a career like that. So may she rest in peace, and I just hope that one day I can focus on the music and be as great as she was."The Client List" premieres April 8 on Lifetime.

Q&A: 'The Client List' Star Naturi Naughton: 'There Are So Many Things I Want To Do'April 8th, 2012 10:00am EDT | Brittany Frederick Lifetime's The Client List premieres tonight (10 PM ET/PT). You've seen the saucy ads of Jennifer Love Hewitt as Riley Parks, who works at a day spa that has a little something extra going on. But she's not the only one who's a part of the story. I recently caught up with singer/actress Naturi Naughton, who co-stars with Hewitt in the Lifetime original series, to ask her about her role in the new show, her experience coming off the similarly sexy The Playboy Club, and her other aspirations. What was the moment when you decided on an entertainment career?I was pretty young when I decided I wanted to, well, moreso be a singer. I started singing in church in my hometown, East Orange, New Jersey. I knew when I was about five or six that I wanted to be a performer.Does your musical background help you in acting, since you're already familiar with performing in front of a potentially large audience?I think it does. Starting in music, where I get a chance to connect with the lyrics of a song, I learned so much about performing on stage and connecting to your audience and to what you're singing about. Singing is very emotional. Every song has its own purpose. And it's kind of similar to how every scene has its own journey. How did you make the jump from music to acting?I was in a Broadway show called Hairspray. I was on Broadway for about three years and I had the time of my life. I was learning so much about acting on stage, singing and of course dancing, which I've always loved to do.
Because I was doing Broadway, I had the opportunity to network with a lot of people, so I started auditioning for commercials. The transition happened while I was still in Hairspray. I got an audition for Notorious and I booked it. It was a natural progression. You had one of the leads on the short-lived The Playboy Club. How difficult is it to get into a character and have the show axed so early? It's hard with short-lived shows. That show was such a great show and we actually got to shoot seven episodes. I heard some buzz about a DVD where people can see the rest of our season. I did have a blast being a Bunny from 1963 and getting the opportunity to wear the amazing clothes and the big hair. And the experience to live in Chicago, and the friends that I made and opportunities that I had.
So many things happen in the business. Most professionals, we all have moments where that song was not really the hit song or a movie doesn't go as well as you thought. There's always going to be some bumps in the road but when you get a new project, you're just as excited. I feel like this is a whole new page in the chapter. That brings you to The Client List. How do you describe Kendra?Kendra is a young 23-year-old girl who works in the spa with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Loretta Devine's characters. Kendra's a sweet girl from Texas. She happens to be very, very optimistic. She's the girl that's reading affirmations and giving positivity all day long. She's also very naive. She looks at life through such youthful eyes, [and] as we grow up, we all have growing pains. The show is going to be so fun, so sexy and so drama-filled.What are you looking for when you're starting a new role like this?I pretty much feel the vibe when I meet the producers. After they're interested in me, I pretty much think about where the character will go. I'm one of those people who really wants to see that the growth of the character and concept for her is somewhere I want to go. As long as the story's compelling, unique, interesting fan and the character has a purpose, I usually want to go for it.You're probably best known for your role in Notorious, where you played Lil Kim. How much work did you have to do in order to portray a real person?I was playing a hip-hop icon [so] I had to learn how to rap. I wasn't a rapper. I did a ton of research. I met with different people who grew up there with Biggie and Lil Kim. Puffy was on set and gave me some guidance. Junior Mafia really took me under their wing.
I would watch and listen to Lil Kim all day every day. I read a lot about her home life growing up. I just wanted to embody the character in every aspect. It was challenging, but it was a good challenge for me to break out like that. What shows, movies or musicians are you a fan of?I'm obsessed with the show Parenthood. I just think Parenthood is so good of a show and I connect to all these different stories. I'm also a huge fan of Shameless. I think that show is awesome.
I am inspired by Viola Davis. I've always thought she was fantastic. And I am inspired by Denzel Washington's career. I'm inspired by Halle Berry and Angela Bassett, people that have paved the way for me to even be here.
I have grown up obsessed with Whitney Houston. I literally was obsessed with Whitney. I followed her in so many different ways, especially since she was from New Jersey. Today, she still is my biggest inspiration. Beyonce is a huge inspiration in music for me too.Going forward, are there certain things you'd love to accomplish in your career? There are so many things I want to do. I can go from one end of the spectrum to the other, which is something I love about myself. I think it's nice to have a broad palate of things.
I want to be back on Broadway one day. That's a dream of mine. There's nothing like live theater and I think it's so important for me to be able to be on stage with an audience that responds. I want to get into writing. I'm actually aspiring to write my own film and get it produced. I want to create new stories that audiences haven't seen.

Naturi Naughton Stars in The Client List, Tupac MusicalBy Gerri Miller Posted: 04/06/2012 11:30 AM EDT Last seen sporting a satin bunny outfit on the short-lived series The Playboy Club, Naturi Naughton finds herself back on television this spring in a new show, again part of a female-centric ensemble in Lifetime’s The Client List, set in a spa that gives select clients a little something extra. Loretta Devine plays the proprietor and Jennifer Love Hewitt stars as a single mom in financial straits who takes a job at the Texas establishment. Naughton’s character is Kendra, the baby of the bunch. “She’s very sweet and naïve and youthful. She brings this side to the character that I didn’t get to do in other characters I’ve played that were more sexy and serious. She’s the yoga-Zen-positive-happy girl,” Naughton compares. “But she’s living a double life as well. She’s engaged to be married and her fiancé doesn’t know that she works in the spa,” and might call off the wedding if he finds out. Arlen Escarpeta ( American Dreams) plays the boyfriend, “and you’ll see some drama between us in the fourth episode.” Although she was shocked and saddened by The Playboy Club’s cancellation, as she “expected so many great things for the show,” she feels fortunate to have landed another job quickly. Pink slipped in October, she got the job on The Client List in December. Not only was she thrilled that she could live at home, since it shoots in Los Angeles, she loved the fact that it was a female ensemble. “Working with women is fun for me. I feel like I’ve gained a new group of friends, which is always nice,” Naughton says. “It’s hard to do that in this business.” Also active in other mediums, the Fame star has the independent movie Highland Park making the film festival circuit. She plays an aspiring singer encouraged by her guidance counselor (Kimberly Elise) to set her sights beyond her Detroit neighborhood and follow her dreams. She gets to sing a bit in it, and would love to do so in The Client List if the opportunity arises, but she will definitely get the chance to put her pipes to use this spring. She’ll spend the next few months in New York in a workshop production of Holler if You Hear Me, based on the music of Tupac Shakur. “It’s not Tupac’s life, it’s his music inspiring a story,” she differentiates. She's sworn to secrecy not to reveal plot or cast, but was visibly thrilled to be a part of it. “Singing and performing is my passion,” she says. “I’m really happy.” The Client List premieres on April 8 at 10 p.m. EST on Lifetime.

I remember years ago she said that they instructed how to act by the label: Adrienne was supposed to be sassy and "fiery," Naturi was the hood black girl and Kiely was supposed to be the bohemian lightskin.
Management definitely was at the heart of that group's issues but I'm pretty sure their manager was Kiely's mom which probably made it super awkward.

Naturi Naughton Expecting First ChildBy Melody Chiu Posted on March 22, 2017 at 9:30am EDT It’s going to be a busy — but sweet — summer for Naturi Naughton: the Power actress is due with her first child in July. “It’s been a little surreal, but I feel really good, healthy and strong,” the star, 32, tells PEOPLE exclusively. The pregnancy came as a surprise to Naughton and her longtime boyfriend Ben, but “it’s such a blessing,” she says. “I feel like being pregnant and entering this new stage has made me stronger and more excited about life in general. Everything seems so much more purposeful.” After discovering she was pregnant while in the middle of shooting her hit STARZ show in Brooklyn, Naughton’s cast and crew became protective of her on set. “They’ve been really good at keeping it on the low, but they’re also super excited,” she says. “Omari [Hardwick], who plays my husband, we have kids on the show and he’s like, ‘Now you get to be experiencing motherhood in real life!’ Everyone’s been really supportive.” And as her baby bump continues to grow, Naughton has learned some tricks to hiding her belly for the show. “I had maternity jeans they ordered for me, and I do a lot of tops that are peplum-style. I was amazed at how un-pregnant I could look.” The entertainer’s also been eating healthier since finding out she’s expecting — with one exception. “I love kale, I love strawberries and pineapples, but I’m not proud of this … I’ve been eating Cup Noodles. I really want salty, spicy things, and Cup Noodles has been really awesome. I haven’t had one since college!” For now, Naughton is picking out colors for the baby’s nursery with her boyfriend and looking forward to nesting this summer before her little one’s arrival. “It’ll just be a great summer to enjoy motherhood and this journey to motherhood,” she says. “It’s a really amazing responsibility, but it’s such a blessing and that to me is worth more than anything I can imagine.” http://instagram.com/p/BR9u5jBlN4r

Adrienne was just as bad as her KFC 2 piece partner in crime. If Naturi wasn't on a successful show she wouldn't even apologize or pay her any mind publicly. Like how she does Kiely. she won't even say Kiely's name when talking about 3LW now. Playa pleathe

That fake ass apology. The worst kind of apologies are those that start with "if I did anything to offend/hurt you". There's no sincerity in it and you still haven't really OWNED up to your s**t. That's what I got from that.
Kiely and Naturi never got along to begin with when 3LW first began. Kiely and her mom/sister manager never thought Naturi was HOOD or GHETTO enough, whatever that suppose to mean. Adrienne was just a follow the leader type bitch.

Actually Adrienne and Naturi have been on good terms for some years now. Naturi even acknowledged that Adrienne was the only girl to apologize with no mention of Kiely at all Now with Kiely sister going on that rant we now know why they don't mention her ass.
