Yes- a 25th anniversary edition of the biggest-selling album in history was the second-best-selling album in the week it was issued- no surprise there. But until MJ's passing, there were not enough instances of BIG-selling catalog albums in a week to make Billboard consider changing the catalog rule. Because the post-MJ-passing sales were so big, that made Billboard look at the situation- knowing it was extraordinary circumstances- and, ultimately, change the rule. Once the MJ mania calmed down some, the result has been that few catalog albums have reached the upper reaches of the Billboard 200. Outside of passings of a big star like MJ, reissues of notable albums (Beatles and Rolling Stones most recently) and some holiday albums, catalog albums don't appear among the top 10 selling albums in a given week.

I have no problem with catalog albums charting on the BB 200. But, as evidenced, barring the aforementioned special circumstances, big weekly sales for catalog albums are not a major occurrence.

LOL - You can tag the word "special" to it all you want

Top 10 and top 20 catalog albums have happened in higher frequency in recent years. This would be due to a growing share of the market on catalog albums. It is gone from happening once or twice a decade to several times a year.

I had a running tally in the chart trivia thread until they changed the rules.

A catalog album reissue in say, 1998 would come nowhere near the top 10, now major reissues chart high every time out.

Even without the death of Michael Jackson the rule change was inevitable

I'm not sure MOAIA has out sold Barbra's album. Mariah may be 21,000 higher than Barbra on that list but her total is 7 months newer.

Celebration is at or slightly over 250,000 by now.

I don't know, Love Is The Answer fell off quickly, so I don't expect it to sell tons of copies during its absence on the charts. Even if we assume that she has sold more than 500k copies so far, Carey will be outselling her soon. MOAIA is still selling around 1.5k a week, whereas LITA can't even be found on Billboard's Jazz Album (The #3 is Norman Brown's Sending My Love, which did not appear on this week's BB200).

Anyways, to be honest, while solid, the numbers from Brand New Eyes dissapoint me. Riot! sold well over 1m, but I guess that no big hits so far from BNE hurt the album sales.

FYI- through week ending April 11, Paul Grein reported sales of Barbra Streisand's Love is the Answer as 491,000- so, it's had 12 weeks of sales since then. Not too shabby for an album that didn't come close to landing a Hot 100 entry, from an act almost 50 yeears in the business. Was it ever available for $7.99 at Best Buy or Target long after its release? I truly don't know, why I'm asking. If we're comparing albums released in the same week, may as well have all the facts.

^ The you should also mention that it's her first studio album to be released since 2005 and Carey in perspective released one in 2008 too. You're right that it's incredible that she reached Gold after making music for so long now, but you should also mention that she appeals to a much older generation than Carey as you can see by analyzing digital single sales.

^That is true- but in regards to time in-between studio albums, hasn't Eminem shown that that doesn't matter too much? :) Also relates to the argument that Christina Aguilera had a four-year gap between studio albums, while Sade had a decade or so.- and look how differently they performed. I don't think there's really any rule set for stuff like that; it depends on the act itself, the material, age, etc. etc.
