Um, why isn't Uncle Kracker's "Smile" charting? Isn't it top 20 in airplay?
And congrats to La Roux. For a song that hasn't been favored by radio and has had a tough struggle on its own, it's still hanging in there and even managed to move up a few spots!

Who are other acts with 10 hits between the US and UK? GaGa has 4 (all lead artist) Kanye has 5 (2 as lead artist) Black Eyed Peas have 5 (all lead artist) Justin has 6 (3 as lead artist) Jay-Z has 6 (2 as lead artist) Britney has 7 (all lead artist) Rihanna has 8 (5 as lead artist) Beyonce is at 9 (8 as lead artist) Usher has 10 (all lead artist) It's 10+ #1 hits in the US and the UK, not between the US and the UK. None of the above artists are anywhere near having 10 or more #1 hits in both the US and the UK. The Beatles, Elvis and Madonna appear to be the only ones(so far). Mariah Carey has an incredible 18 #1's in the US, but comes nowhere near 10 #1's in the UK(where she's a lot less popular), so she doesn't make the list either.

For a song that hasn't been favored by radio and has had a tough struggle on its own, it's still hanging in there and even managed to move up a few spots! Because the Billboard Hot 100 presently has rules in place (outdated, in my opinion) that do not allow a single to re-chart the Billboard Hot 100 if it has already spent twenty or more weeks on the chart and has fallen below the Top Fifty (which "Smile" never peaked higher than #43 originally) I think it's pointless to keep this rule intact in the digital era. I certainly believe gold singles and songs from previous album eras shouldn't be allowed to re-chart (which they do allow in the United Kingdom and many other countries) but it's ridiculous when it applies to current hits. OMG that is ridiculous. It's not Uncle Kracker's fault that he didn't get the same radio airplay favoritism like Eminem or Rihanna or Usher or Katy Perry, etc. He had a slow and steady climb and he finally cracked the Top 20 in airplay, and because his single never managed to peak higher than #43 but spent 20 weeks on the chart, it gets booted? WTF???
Shouldn't songs that spend MORE time below the top 40 get more slack than say a damn song that sits in the Top 40 but won't go away because radio won't stop playing it?? This system really blows, I think the same happened to The Tings Tings with "That's Not My Name"? The song barely peaked higher than 60 but finally got wind in its sails at the end, but was removed from the chart? Then the sales forced Billboard to "re-enter" the song after its points gave it a top 50 placing, hell it even went on to become a Top 40 hit.
Poor Uncle Kracker, I thought this song would be his comeback hit. I guess it won't unless sales force Billboard to make it a re-entry?

Can't they re-enter if they're resent to radio or something? It happened to the Dixie Chicks in 2007 after they won the Grammys.

Adonis, Michael Jackson has had 7 UK No. 1 hits.
peigan- I had mentioned that Eminem now had 10 different tracks that hit No. 1 in either the USA or UK- hence, his post. Elvis Presley by far has the most unique No. 1 hits between the two countries- 32 (that includes three 2005 re-issues); the Beatles have 24, Madonna and Mimi Carey have 20 and Michael Jackson has 16. I'm going to be doing a blog on it.
RE Uncle Kracker- what is the catalyst behind "Smile" climbing in airplay? If the label re-promoted it, then Billboard would chart it, per its policy, no?

I'm not sure, but according to the last Mediabase update, the song is still climbing at #14 for crying out loud!

"Smile" initially reached #43 on the Hot 100 from CHR and AC airplay, then dropped off after 20 weeks. The current boost is mainly from Country airplay, where the song is just outside the top ten in its 39th week. I think its continued success at Country has led a few other formats to start adding it. The label has effectively re-promoted the song as a country track, and it is ridiculous for Billboard to relegate it to recurrent status. Songs like Anna Nalick's "Breathe" and the Ting Tings' "That's Not My name" were allowed to rechart when the hit new peaks months after their initial run; Billboard needs to let this song back on the Hot 100. Apparently, even in this age of huge digital first weeks, some songs need a little more time to find an audience...

This song deserves to be on the HOT 100 especially since it's being promoted at another format from it's original format or it's taking off. Billboard is way off the mark in this case. They need to address this issue in their BB magazine. has anyone sent the chart editor a letter regarding this matter?

"Smile" would unquestionably be besting its present Billboard Hot 100 peak before its removal to recurrent status if it were charting now. "Smile" would have more than likely been a Top Ten hit if the label hadn't screwed up its release strategy so badly...............releasing it as a digital single well before it finally began to ascend the Hot AC chart, then waiting to release it to Top 40 Mainstream after it had already reached the Top Five on Hot AC, then waiting to push it to Country and AC radio after it had already gone recurrent on Hot AC and vanished from the Top 40 Mainstream format. I think it's time for the Hot 100 to let any song chart, from any year, for however long as long as it has enough points

Holiday Guy, well researched blog. I have a feeling you already know this, but the Beatles also have the most #1 albums on the Billboard album chart (19), as well as the most total weeks at #1 on that album chart. I'm pretty sure they are high on the list of the most UK #1 albums as well.

If songs like "I'm Yours" arer able to rack up 100+ weeks on the chart, then let them do it. Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" would be a constant Hot 100 fixture and Jeff Buckley would have scored a top ten hit with "Hallelujah." If these are the songs that are popular then Billboard should reflect that.

Esp since the music industry is lately singles-based with a ton of songs doing decently each week while relatively few albums do.
Looks like on Mediatraffic Em will pass Katy after her 7 week reign tying IKAG, as he has the top increase and she lost her bullet. Some Euro smash We No Speak Americano is T10. IGF week 58.

We No Speak Americano is an infectious dance floor novelty track from an Aussie electro outfit. They've done well with it in Europe and Australia. I wish it would get released in the US, but the odds of that happening are as great as Uncle Kracker's "Smile" recharting to new peaks on the Hot 100.

It would make the chart that much more interesting, sure we'd have the likes of "I Gotta Feeling" hanging around for ages and ages but we'd also would've had Jeff Buckley as a top five single a couple years ago or even a potential #1, same with MJ's "Man in the Mirror" the week after his death.

Songs CAN re-enter after 20 weeks if they are currently being worked to radio and would reenter the top 50 or above. Obviously Uncle Kracker, despite his airplay rank - doesn't have the sales to materialize in the top 50 yet. It's #1 on Hot 100 recurrents

RE Uncle Kracker- I've contacted Billboard, and, essentially this is the case. Usually, Billboard recharts tracks that go from country radio to pop- Uncle Kracker's case is a special one. Billboard does not have a filter in place that automatically detects when a track resurges, so this one slipped under the radar. Billboard will look to see where "Smile" would rank on the coming week's chart, and it should appear. So there you have it. :) The last time someone checked it, it was not close to the top 50- but, that probably was some time ago. BTW- how long has it been actively climbing the country chart, since it initially peaked? Surely not 39 weeks? Did it chart there initially, and then drop off and re-enter down the road?
Thanks, peigan. Yah, I know of The Beatles' album milestones. :) Someone at UKMix drafted a list of acts with 10+ unique No. 1 albums in the UK and USA, and I may do that. A list of acts with 10 total No. 1s in the UK and USA (regardless of repeating the feat in both countries or not) would not be a lengthy list. hehe
