I really don't see why usher should be listened. It's ARTIST'S list and he has nothing to do with that. And Timberlake does????

As a Prince fan I love seeing him in the top ten, but this list is pretty random. Cheap Trick ahead of Tom Petty? Judas Priest ahead of Eminem and Earth Wind & Fire?
Seems like they just pulled names out of a hat...

No Janet Jackson??? I didnt expect her to be any higher than 50, but she definitely deserved to be on the "...all time" list more than some others (i.e Justin Timberlake). I know she's fallen off since 2004, but come on.

Looking at the contemporary artists (1. Radiohead, 2. Jay-Z, 3. Beyonce, 4. Justin Timberlake, 5. Coldplay, 6. Eminem, 7. Mary J Blige, 8. Green Day, 9. OutKast, 10. Alicia Keys), I think the order is a little screwy. Playing with these artists, I'd rank Radiohead, Eminem, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Green Day, Mary J Blige, OutKast, Coldplay, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys.
Not sure what merits Beyonce, Justin & Coldplay (and possibly even Jay-Z) being ranked above Eminem. He's the best seller of the decade, very critically acclaimed (at least in his prime), impactful/controversial and original. Not trying to make excuses but I have a feeling this list was compiled closer to the end of '09, in the middle of Beyonce cleaning up at award shows and Jay-Z in the middle of ESOM-mania. It'd also make more sense than Kanye wasn't included - not saying he'd be ranked too high but I think he deserves it over A. Keys.
The list generally looks good to me, though. Surprised that Zeppelin is above The Stones but not mad. I'm a massive MJ fan so I'm happy to see him at #3 but I wonder where he'd be if this list was compiled 15 months ago.

I really don't see why usher should be listened. It's ARTIST'S list and he has nothing to do with that. Huh? He's an artist just as much as Beyonce is. If we are going off songwriting or producing a lot of these people need to be taken off.

i really don't get how beyonce would rank higher than mary j. blige, whitney houston, anita baker, gladys knight, roberta flack or any other r&b female artist that came before her. ???
justin timberlake's inclusion disgusts me as well. to me he's just a 2000's version of phil collins, always being omnipresent throughout the decade. i never got the kiss-assery artists/critics had behind him.

Thanks for the "thanks," a couple of the usual suspects referring to me and their knowledge of my Mimi likes. (actually I like more than the debut album, but that's here nor there). And this list circulated before I came across it. And since I enjoy critical features and know others do, why not report it? I went through the 1998 list and this one. Here is the 2010 list, with 1998 rankings in parentheses; if the act didn't place in the 1998 list, a () indicates that. This new list was not kind to Motown and older acts. But, they're surveying music industry people, artists, etc., so it's bound to change.
Acts from the 1998 list who do not appear in the 2010 list.
Eric Clapton (15) The Eagles (23) Buddy Holly (34) Miles Davis (39) The Jackson 5 (44) Crosby, Stills and Nash (45) The Sex Pistols (46) Creedence Clearwater Revival (47) Roy Orbison (49) B.B. King (51) Grateful Dead (54) The Byrds (55) Sam Cooke (58) Bo Diddley (59) Smokey Robinson (61) Sting (63) Frank Zappa (64) James Taylor (65) Allman Brothers (68) Stevie Ray Vaughan (70) Rod Stewart (71) Simon and Garfunkel (72) Mudy Waters (73) Devo (82) T. Rex (84) Carole King (85) Santana (87) Tom Waits (90) Gladys Knight and the Pips (91) The Temptations (92) The Four Tops (93) Diana Ross and The Supremes (94) Robert Johnson (95) Fats Domino (97) Traffic (98) Paul Simon (100)

At first glance the list is pretty standard. I agree with it less as it goes on. The top 10 is fairly difficult to argue with, it's lower down with Cheap Trick and Justin Timberlake putting in appearances when it gets odder. ...And yeah lists like these are a dime a dozen and more or less pointless. It's not like anyone would even know this one existed if HolidayGuy didn't take every opportunity to start threads to talk to himself about how Mariah Carey isn't a critical favorite.

HolidayGuy, those are some BIG names they excluded this time. No Supremes, Temptations, or Bo Diddley? I say this list is bulls**t.

Eminem the Britney of rap? Eminem has enjoyed FAR more acclaim (since debuting) and critical success than Ms. Spears. So not sue how anyone could think he only started making quality music recently. And outside of her first single, Spears' "controversies" have mostly been related to her personal life (the meltdown, for instance). if anything, Eminem is the Madonna of rap- a better comparison, not only because they both hail from Michigan, but also because they're both acclaimed and use their work to spark debate and discussion.

Beyonce is the LEGEND of our generation....no questiions about it anymore Not Britney, not Usher, not CTINA or who ever else....when will people accept it...its happend lol Well you not thinking Usher or Britney as legends is a matter of opinion. i have heard all three viewed that way. xtina not so much just a great voice but have not heard her regarded as a legend. I love Beyonce too but you know this list is suspect when most of the people on the list ranked lower than have made music to stand the test of time. She is a legend but so is Eminem (deserves a higher ranking), Britney (who doesn't deserve to rank on the list tbh)This is VH1 of course but it is a bit embarassing that they would rank other artist like Aretha Franklin out of the top 20 and no R.Kelly (can't stand him but still). Marvin Gaye shouldn't be that high IMO. Justin Timberlake...I can't I would have like to see Pink, Usher, Janet, Sade... Short story long...this list outside of the top 15 :o Just realized Madonna is #16... outside top 16 is a mess.

Yeah...I love Britney but Eminem does back it up way more in the talent department and he outshines most rappers which Britney doesn't do as a singer. I don't think the Eminem Madonna comparison is better because Eminem is controversial but undeniably talented in his rapping abilities as well as artistry. Madonna was not as acclaimed ifrom the beginning...I love her work but Eminem was when he first started. Plus, she is not a strong singer and you can't deny that...even according to her. Eminem is up there with greatest rappers of all time. Madonna will never be up there with the greatest singers of all time...even with her undeniable impact and creativity. She is more creative and savvy than talented. IMO

colson- how would pointing out how what acts do or don't do make anything "worse"? LOL
slw- Madonna has enjoyed a lot of acclaim as an *artist*- which, as Bob Dylan can attest, does not mean touting outstanding vocal abilities. :) The debut and Virgin albums came to enjoy more reverence over time, but with the third album, she showed the maturing of her artistry., which culminated with Like a Prayer. In essence, what has made her stand ut from most others is the whole package- the capable singing, the music, the videos, the stage shows, and all she's done with that to inspire debate and discussion in culture.
Timberlake has had two solo albums, right? So, yeah, I'd agree that his placement is kinda high. Someone like Janet Jackson should place above him- but, the last decade may have hurt her more than I thought.

chato, I was joshing abut "being from Detroit." Kid Rock doesn't belong anywhere near the likes of acclaimed, revered acts like Madge, Aretha and Eminem.

Bjork appeared at the low end of LIFE's 100 Greatest Rock and Rollers list several years back. The three ladies you listed were in the 100 Greatest Women feature in 1999 (which polled ONLY women, not just in music industry but also fashion, literature, politics, etc.) The voters for this list probably aren't that into the acts, I guess.

Where are: Bjork Tori Amos PJ Harvey Beck Nine Inch Nails The lack of Tori and PJ isn't surprising - they fly under the radar time and time again. The others are definitely striking absences - critically and commercially successful acts in their own right. I'd like to think they would have been on a Top 125 list.

OK, I'm sorry.
No disrespect to anyone on this list, but there is no way, looking at some of the acts, especially the latter half, that Carole King deserves to be off this list. Ridiculous.
