I just realized Ke$ha opened with 150k as a newcomer with one single in the worst sales month and Katy Perry isn't that much higher with 2 hits, a fall release, perfect set-up

I think that shows how strong Ke$ha was this year. Katy is no different from "Good Girl Gone Bad" opening with 172k first week, imo. She's just not a huge album seller.

Damn this is a long sales drought I hope we get them soon!!!!!!
And yes going 2x plat nowadays is a huge accomplishment, very few people can do it. Last year if i remember correctly only 2 albums finished the year with over 3 mill and the 3rd place was not even 2.5 million, and this year i think only 2 albums have crossed the 2 mill mark

going Gold is the new platinum. Platinum is the new 3x platinum and 2x platinum is the new 5xplatinum.

I wouldn't say '_is the new _'. Overall sales are down but until the RIAA lowers certification level, measures of success fundamentally stay the same. But yeah it's getting more difficult to sell a decent number of albums.
In the Yahoo Chartwatch column, Paul mentioned they should add a 'Silver' certification for albums that ship 250k copies. Y'know so Bionic can get that Silver smash cert

^As I have said again and again and again, albums are still selling Gold and Platinum levels.
Labels are not spending money on album certifications. Look at Eminem. Two 2xp certifications are possible and neither have been certified.
Creating a Silver certification, will just create an extra expense for labels.
Does anyone really pay attention to album certs anymore? (besides me)

Certifications = awards
Do they make or break a sales success? no
But is it a nice recognition of selling (or I guess shipping) x amount of copies? yes
I don't think creating a Silver cert would be an issue. Believe it or not, some artists ARE actively certified by there labels, saying so and so has a 'GOLD ALBUM' or 'PLATINUM ALBUM', 'MULTI-PLATINUM ALBUM' etc is a good promotional tool and is still used by a lot of labels. It at least gives the option to the record label to award an album, since IMO there are some album successes that don't necessarily officially ship millions or 500k.
If a label doesn't want to pay for a certification, then they won't period, it doesn't mean there can't be a Silver certification option

I still think with the right choices made she could be even bigger than she is now (like, actually break the 2 million mark instead of "just" platinum). I don't know if they will make those decisions though.

I'm convinced the reason Fantasia sold less than initially expected is because her label didn't ship out enough product.

I agree with those saying that there should be some kind of certification level below Gold.

Silver, Copper, Bronze, Tin levels etc would be expensive
You would also have to retroactively do it for 60 years of music, probably unlikely

I've always said there should be a Silver certification for albums that sell 250k.

I've always said there should be a Silver certification for albums that sell 250k. I really like that idea. This way, more albums will be able to receive certifications.

I just realized Ke$ha opened with 150k as a newcomer with one single in the worst sales month and Katy Perry isn't that much higher with 2 hits, a fall release, perfect set-up Ke$ha released Animal when Tik Tok was HUGE and #1 in the U.S. If Katy released Teenage Dream a couple of weeks back, it would have had better opening sales. She released it after the success of California Gurls and in one of the worst weeks. And it's not a fall release, its a summer release.

I, too, also said they wanted too long to release her album. Had they released it at CG's peak, it would've sold more easily.
