Today marks the 10th anniversary of Toxic. One of Britney's best singles and one of the best pop songs to come out from that decade imo. I think song and ITZ really solidified her as an adult artist. This song gave Britney her first Grammy, gave Britney her first top ten since Oops in the US, and her first #1 since Oops on CHR/Pop radio. In the UK, it was her first #1 since Oops and the song is the 2nd most played song of that decade. Plus, it made it on several end-of-the-decade lists.
It was a critical and commercial smash. Yet, if it were up to the label, this wouldn't have even been on the album, much less a single. Luckily, Britney fought hard for this song and the payoff was massive. Today, it still gets a good amount of recurrent airplay on pop radio. It's a true testament to how fresh and excellently crafted this song is. I think I've actually heard it, randomly on the radio, more times than her latest single since its release, lol.

Has slowly improved with time. When it was released it was probably not top 10 on her discography. Right now I'd probably rank it at #1.

Still sounds fresh today as it did in 2003/04. It sounds so fresh that it could be a big hit today and still love this as much as I did then. I also notice that Cathy Dennis co-wrote this along with "Can't Get You Out Of My Head". She co-wrote two of the most catchiest and perfect sounding pop songs of the 2000's, that's kind of cool to me.

I like it just fine, never saw it as the pop masterpiece it's always been regarded as though. I agree that it has held up well.

Perhaps her most effervescent song. And knowing Britney, that's saying something.

Don't really care for it but that synth/violin part towards the end of each chorus can get irritating every now and then.

I'm not a Britney fan at all but pretending "Toxic," written by the brilliant Cathy Dennis, is not a fantastic Pop record would be stupid. It's catchy and has a great production. Good for Britney!

Released 20 years ago today on MTV’s Making the Video. This has 1 billion streams on Spotify and 647 million views on YouTube and is probably Britney’s biggest hit and one of the best pop songs and video of all time…

I’ve always really liked this song, but grew to like it even more after it peaked. I didn’t get all the hype behind it at the time. In 2003 I may have been more into songs with a more Rhythmic vibe. Again I liked it a lot, just not as much as many others did at the time. At the time I was even more into “The Hook Up and Outrageous” over this. I may still be, but appreciate it more than I did back in the day.

I love that she pushed so hard for this, and it delivered for her. This is probably the key definition of a risky play that paid off for years even after it peaked.
She was going through a lot of challenges behind the scenes with this one, where Jive wanted to bury this song in favor of the other two tracks Outrageous and I've Got That (Boom Boom), and she fought hard for Toxic to be the second single. It's now the (far and away) defining hit track from the album that's seen as one of her best.
The way people stream it today, it will go down as her defining song.
