It's a well known Pulse fact that the Grammys don't mean anything anymore and are a joke I mean god look they nominated a live song and there's an album I don't like in album of the year and where's Kelly Clarkson and this is ridiculous it must be payola...
The Grammys don't mean anything. When did this become undeniable fact.

Not sure, but after Bieber winning all those American Music Awards, I could hug the guys that nominate Grammys

They've never really meant anything, tbh. And I'm not just saying that because some of my faves got snubbed. I genuinely think they're meaningless.

I guess they've never been about awarding good quality songs/artists. But they definitely stopped meaning anything 5 years ago, at least 5 years ago, probably more.

The grammys, like other major award shows are just there for labels to get sales boosts for their artists. That's all it is these days, anyway.

Okay, I'll actually contribute. I don't think they're a joke, honestly. There's no payola involved. It's still the biggest, most relevant music awards show of all time (stateside at least? I'm not sure about overseas.) and just because some of the noms are becoming more pop or whatever doesn't mean they've lost their meaning. The critical acclaim is already out there anyway, this is just a show to recognize it. I'm sorry [insert fav here] didn't get a nom, only so many artists can, but there really isn't anything that strange about the list in comparison to previous years. The incessant backlash is a bit baffling. They've never really meant anything, tbh. And I'm not just saying that because some of my faves got snubbed. I genuinely think they're meaningless. Generally, you don't really get anything out of the reward other than recognition for high quality music and critical acclaim. From a musical standpoint I agree, because winning an award doesn't make your music better, but I still think it's a fun, disposable form of entertainment and a decent way of commending artists for a job well done. Oh, and I didn't vote.

Awards shows are always so subjective. I don't think there's ever been a point where the Grammys suddenly meant less. You could probably look at every year and find nominees that shouldn't be there.
Glee getting nominated is such a joke. I wouldn't say it makes the Grammys a joke as a whole though.

I'm not sure there's any single point where all of a sudden the Grammys completely lost meaning, although Two Against Nature winning Album of the Year probably hastened the effect.
I think it was more of a gradual process as the Pop/Mainstream audiences skewed younger and younger, since most of the younger public couldn't give two s**ts about any kind of critical opinion whatsoever.
The simple fact is, because the mainstream audiences skew to the younger demographics nowadays, you can't make a music award that both has meaning and that people will care about. The Billboard awards at least still have some meaning because they're given out based on objective criteria. Doesn't mean people care about them. Any award that's voted on by the general public is regarded as a joke by pretty much anyone who doesn't vote, and those who do vote really only care if their favorites win or not.
So, I think that people's apathy had just been growing over time, and wins such as Two Against Nature were really when people's individual apathy intersected with people's realization of their fellow public's apathy.

When Katy Perry's Teenage Dream was nominated for Album of the Year. And the song of the same title being nominated for Best Female Pop vocal performance It used to have credibility, but since 08 I've just given up.

When did the Baha Men win for Who Let The Dogs Out? That's a good start.

It's all subjective when you look at the grand scheme of things. Stans only like the Grammys when their faves are winning or are nominated.
On the flip side, Grammys always mean something regardless of opinions. If a someone thinks a song is "of quality" per se, they'll take the Grammys seriously. But if a song the person doesn't like or thinks is crap gets nominated, then suddenly attitudes shift and Grammys don't mean anything.
As long as the quality is there, the Grammys will always be regarded. It's funny to see people say the Grammys don't mean anything by pointing out wins like Baha Men winning or Britney winning because their material is supposedly crap. But the same argument can be reversed and say great albums like Songs In The Key Of Life and College Dropout and/or Graduation are winning multiple Grammys because they're great albums.
Ultimately it's either the win-win or the lose-lose.

Um...they still mean something. Lots of the nominees and winners may be foolish but being a Grammy winner still means something. Sales do go up after the awards, though not always dramatically (Dixie Chicks and Amy Winehouse are good examples of benefactors of Grammy effect).
I help book shows for my university and many artists' prices shot way up after last night's announcement. It matters.

This post is more of a joke than the Grammys. Yeah, I personally rarely agree with the Grammys enough to satisfy me but at the same time, when did airplay and sales charts mean anything? When did the Oscars mean anything? So people disagree on things. It's still one of the more prestigious honours in the music industry.

Grammy's still mean the most out of all the music award shows. Tell Keri Hilson they don't mean anything. Tell Miranada Lambert they don't mean anything(crying after she got nominated). Tell Kelly Clarkson they dont mean anything, when they clearly meant alot to her when she won. Tell Beyonce they dont mean anything. Tell GaGa, Xtina(who could forget her excitment when she won BNA).
95% of Artists care about the Grammys. Pulse and other online message boards are just full of bitching, whining, nobodys. It wouldn't matter who got nominated people would still bitch.
They are far from perfect, and sometimes they go for the familar(although leaving at Alicia & Mary, Carol and James, and Sade was surprising)but in terms of mainstream music award shows tell Greenday, Kanye West, Eminem, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Carrie Underwood or Colbie Calliat they don't mean anything.

I think the whole 'fave didn't get nom' argument is a little bit too broad of a stroke to paint. Too big of an assumption. People just don't agree with the nominations and get mad. Simply as that. Theyll always mean something to some, but its credibility as a whole has declined. Either way, this happens every year. People get mad when things don't go their way.
