Ryan's back. I was hoping for a big "catch up" week, and catch up they do. Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, and The Lumineers all make healthy jumps. Ke$ha makes a rare climb to #1 from outside the top 5.

Was Chris Wallace ever a Breakout/On The Verge? 'Cause to see him finally make AT40 could give him a good leg-up.

Full service, this week. ;) A little late to be breaking out Megan and Liz. The song's done. Also, have they given up on the "Two For One"? They didn't have one last week. They don't, appear, to have one this week. Was Chris Wallace ever a Breakout/On The Verge? 'Cause to see him finally make AT40 could give him a good leg-up. Nope. This is the song's first AT40 play.

Another cycle when the chart feels off; arguably too little movement last week and too much this week to compensate. Still the moves are interesting to watch; note the 19-notch jump of Bieber/Minaj "Beauty and a Beat", as well as the fact that both halves of the double-act have solo hits as extras. Furthermore, Nicki Minaj also has the second-biggest jumper with "Va Va Voom", though it's unclear if it'll go much higher since it seems to have slowed/stalled on Mediabase at about the same level.
So I guessed wrong last week about "Die Young"; I didn't expect a 6-1 jump, but thought it would hit the top next week. That makes it the first song to leap to #1 from outside the top 5 in a regular week (not distorted by "frozen" weeks at the end of the year) since Pink moved 6-1 with "U and Ur Hand" in May 2007. Speaking of frozen year ends, that and the fact that "Die Young" is still at #1 on MB mean that it may well be the last #1 of 2012.

Speaking of frozen year ends, that and the fact that "Die Young" is still at #1 on MB mean that it may well be the last #1 of 2012. I'd say that's pretty much a given. Even if she were to lose #1 on the last official weekly chart of the year, I doubt it'll be reflected on AT40 in time. Also: What week(s) will AT40 be using for year-end? I say week(s) to account for the possibility that they'll just do one Top 40 of the year week this year or some future year. But, if they were to do it twice again, it's arguably a toss-up as to which two weeks they'll use - 12/22 and 29, or 12/29 and 1/5. You could make a case for either pairing. Certainly there won't be another #1 until next year if it's the former.

Based on past practice, I'd guess that 12/22 and 12/29 will have year end shows, regardless of how many songs are in the countdown. The last two years had the same top 40 of the year aired on back-to-back weeks, which I think is ridiculous. Either do a full top 100 or only pre-empt the regular countdown for one week; if Ryan's unavailable get a guest host.

Songs outside the Top 40 of the year do not hold an interest with programmers anymore. A Top 100 of the year over two weeks is a thing of the past. Too many "unfamiliar" songs according to the powers that be.

I guess AT40 isn't playing any Christmas songs as extras for this year.

Leading into #1, Ryan mentioned that "Die Young" makes the biggest jump to #1 since Iyaz's "Replay" (which jumped 8-1 the first week of 2010). However, that week had a, ridiculously, insane amount of movement, all distorted by the frozen weeks. As mkarns, rightfully, points out, that one shouldn't count.

If I'm not mistaken Kesha's "TiK ToK" jumped up 12-2 as well.

When "Replay" hit #1, Ryan mentioned that it was the biggest jump to #1 since 2005. Also, Ryan said that Hunter Hayes was the youngest solo male to hit #1 on the country chart, beating the old record by Elvis Presley.

My station finished playing the first segment right at 7AM when the show is supposed to start. Great timing. The 2 phone call songs have dropped off together. Nice to have 3 breakouts. The last one was played in an unusual spot, but it did allow for a longer 07-06-05 segment. What's with 2 extras in a row after #33? They need to go back to countdown school. I don't like the I'm A Bee song. Rihanna doesn't have the first song about diamonds in the sky, and it's more than just Lucy apparently. Train only has about 11 ways in the lyrics to say goodbye, but it beats Paul Simon's 7 ways to leave your lover. Psy has a big drop, and this is before his anti-American remarks came to light. When Ryan started the top 4, it reminded me of how Casey used to say "We're just 4 hits away from the #1 song in the land" but it really was just 3 hits away. LOL

Do all stations play the Breakout/On the Verge songs, or do they choose whether to include them or not?

Do all stations play the Breakout/On the Verge songs, or do they choose whether to include them or not? I think they are supposed to play all the extras except the optional ones at the beginning of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th hours, and before #2( usually).

So they play everything besides the optional extras? That's what I thought, but someone thought otherwise and just wanted to clarify. :)

I missed the show Sunday because I woke up late. :'( I'm sad because there's a lot of hoopla on the chart this time around. I'm happy to see Die Young rocket into the top. I <3 that song. Now that the yearend countdown is coming up. I think the #1 song of 2012 will either be "Glad You Came", "Good Feeling" or "We Found Love".
