Carrie Underwood leads the field at the 2012 CMT Music Awards, claiming five nominations when the candidates were announced Monday morning (April 23) in New York City on NBC's Today show.
The nominations were revealed by Today host Hoda Kotb and guest co-host Willie Geist with guests Little Big Town, who received a nomination in the CMT performance of the year category for their version of Coldplay's "Fix You" from the concert special, Music Builds: The CMT Disaster Relief Concert.
Women are the frontrunners this year with Miranda Lambert following close behind Underwood with four nominations -- two for her solo work and two as a member of country trio and first-time nominees Pistol Annies, who are up for group video of the year and USA Weekend breakthrough video of the year.
Jason Aldean, Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts, Blake Shelton, Taylor Swift and Thompson Square are next in line, tied for three nominations each. The Civil Wars also received three nominations, including two for their collaboration with Taylor Swift on the hit song "Safe & Sound" from The Hunger Games soundtrack.
The 2012 CMT Music Awards mark the 11th anniversary of the show and will air live from Nashville on June 6 on CMT and CMT.com. Fans can vote now through June 4 to determine the winners -- online at CMT.com, on their mobile device at CMT Mobile or the CMT Insider app available on iPhone, iPad and Android.
The five nominees for video of the year will be announced at the beginning of the live show and fans can then vote at CMT.com, CMT mobile, on the CMT Insider app and via text message throughout the live telecast (ET/CT only) to determine the night's big winner. LBT's performance was incredible, but it shouldn't surprise anyone when Carrie and Steven Tyler pick that one up.

Knowing that this is entirely fan-voted (although, it's only one set of votes per IP address, rather than voting once a day, which could make a difference in the outcomes), I'll make some fun predictions... Video of the Year Jason Aldean -- "Dirt Road Anthem" Lady Antebellum -- "We Owned the Night" Miranda Lambert -- "Over You" Taylor Swift Featuring the Civil Wars -- "Safe & Sound" Carrie Underwood -- "Good Girl"
**Those will be the final 5, and I can see any of the three blondes taking it. More than likely, though, it'll be a battle between Taylor & Carrie.**
Male Video of the Year Jason Aldean -- "Dirt Road Anthem" Luke Bryan -- "I Don't Want This Night to End" Eric Church -- "Drink in My Hand" Toby Keith -- "Red Solo Cup" Blake Shelton -- "God Gave Me You" Keith Urban -- "Long Hot Summer"
Female Video of the Year Sara Evans -- "My Heart Can't Tell You No" Miranda Lambert -- "Over You" Martina McBride -- "I'm Gonna Love You Through It" Kellie Pickler -- "Tough" Taylor Swift -- "Ours" Carrie Underwood -- "Good Girl"

Kellie so belongs with all those females. I hope the CMAs look that way too for female vocalist. She sure earned it! I saw her live tonight in an acoustic concert, wow, such a great voice.

The nominees look pretty good overall. And I, too, would love a CMT Music Awards performance from Kellie Pickler, especially is the song in question is "100 Proof"!

Not a big Toby fan, but at least Kid Rock isn't hosting again. Don't know much about Kristen Bell.

Lauren Alaina, Casey James, Jana Kramer, Scotty McCreery, Kip Moore and The Farm will be performing on the Nationwide Insurance stage during the 2012 CMT Music Awards airing live Wednesday (June 6) at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CMT and CMT.com. The stage will be featured throughout the event at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena.
As part of their sponsorship, Nationwide will award the Nationwide Insurance On Your Side Award to country music's best new live act as determined by the fans. Fans can watch their videos and vote through Monday (June 4) at CMT.com for nominees Eli Young Band, Brantley Gilbert, Jake Owen and Thompson Square. 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will reveal the winner during the show.
Hosted by Toby Keith and Kristen Bell, the CMT Music Awards will include performances by Luke Bryan, Kenny Chesney, Eric Church, Toby Keith, Lady Antebellum, Little Big Town, Willie Nelson, Brad Paisley, Pistol Annies, Rascal Flatts, The Band Perry, Carrie Underwood, Hank Williams Jr. and the Zac Brown Band.
Through Monday, fans can vote online at CMT.com and on their mobile device at CMT Mobile or the CMT Insider app available on iPhone, iPad and Android to determine the winners. The five finalists for video of the year will be announced at the beginning of the live show. Fans can then vote at CMT.com, CMT mobile, on the CMT Insider app and via text message throughout the live telecast (ET/CT only) to determine the night's big winner.
For more information as it becomes available, follow CMT's new Twitter handle (@cmt), #CMTawards and become a fan of the CMT Music Awards on Facebook.
CMT added more performers. I am glad to see Jana Kramer and Lauren Alaina performing. It is nice to see two new solo female acts get a shot to perform. Cant wait to see what both of them will be singing.

Anybody find it odd ( and yet VERY cool) that both Willie Nelson and Hank Jr are performing?!

Eric Church better not perform "Drink In My Hand". I can see it though. It's nominated for awards, and its the CMT Awards.

Question. Maybe someone here will know the answer. Is CMT.COM streaming the awards this year? I don't have CMT but I am interested in watching the show itself. I know the past few years they did the whole stream because I watched it through them but this year I haven't been able to find anything that says they are.

At rehearsals on Tuesday, Rascal Flatts’ Jay DeMarcus told a CMT crew,
“I’ve got to tell you, tonight was amazing because we’ve dreamed about collaborating with Journey forever. So to be up there onstage with those guys who are heroes. You hate to say ‘heroes’ growing up, but as kids of the ’80s, their music was iconic for that era. I was such a huge fan, so to be able to stand onstage beside some your heroes is the best feeling on the entire planet. You can’t describe it. You can’t put it into words — and it’s nerve-wracking!”
Joe Don Rooney added,
“It is a little nerve-wracking, but what’s cool is to see that these guys are as hungry as ever to perform and to play and to make music. It’s so cool with [lead vocalist Arnel Pineda] in the band now. It’s been this injection. This guy’s got serious energy. He’s got serious pipes. He can really, really sing and really bring it. It’s good to see these guys 30 years in the business, and they’re still just dying to get on stage and make music for the fans. I think it’s exciting for us to see that.”
Gary LeVox concluded,
“As a band, they’ve made some of the most timeless music in music history. So to be able to share the same stage and sing and play with those guys is just a dream come true.”

I'm in Nashville and avoiding these at all costs.
Brad Paisley and Eric Church are apparently performing outside the Bridgestone Arena prior to the show starting.

According to the Boot, President Obama and Mitt Romney will have an opening segment on the show. Unbelievable!

Rascal Flatts with Journey...
Lady A with Hot Chelle Rae...
Isn't this supposed to be a country awards show?
