Every now and then, singers take a break from the pop/dance craze and release a song with "content" or anything that doesn't talk about love, sex, break up, dancing in a club, or about themselves. Some succeed ( e.g Beautiful by Christina, Fireworks by Katy Perry, Frozen by Madonna, Family Portrait by P!nk ) then some imo sound pretentious in a bid for some credibility and respect ( e.g Someday I Will Understand by Britney, When You're Gone by Avril, We R Who We R by Ke$ha, Rain on Me by Ashanti ) So what are the songs you think sound pretentious

??? Firework, Frozen, When You're Gone are all about relationships - Britney never put out a single called Someday I Will Understand - and We R Who We R is still pop/dance
Don't really get what you're asking...

Forget about relationship. Fireworks and Frozen dealt deeper than "relationships" We R Who We R is pop/dance but it has an underlying statement. Britney did put out Someday I Will Understand, I'm not sure if it was released in the US, but it was about her and motherhood. What I mean is songs that trying to be "serious" yet sounds pretentious. Better example maybe Britney Spears I'm Not A Girl Not Yet A Woman

Any of Madonna's songs which focus on her "traumatic" childhood (exception: Oh Father) or the perils of fame (completely insincere on her part).

I really don't think Britney wrote/released 'Someday' in a bid for credibility or respect. If so, she probably would have saved it for a future album or made sure that it was given a proper worldwide release as a single. The song just explains her feelings at the time. There's nothing pretentious about it.

imo one of the only true examples of this, especially if you're only counting hits, is here by alessia cara. great production and i totally get the lyrical sentiment but man, the way they're phrased make me wince

"7 Years" by Lukas Graham or whatever thinks it cuts way deeper than it actually does.

It may have actually been better for her to lean into some polarizing aspects, because she became so faceless and demure after that everybody stopped caring altogether.
