This is for the hip hop experts? I'm for sure not one of them. Is Flo Rida respected by the hip hop community? Too pop? How would you rate him as a rapper? By the same token, how about MC Hammer now that's been like 20 years since he was huge? Back then I remember talking to some hip hop fans, they considered him a joke and they would listen instead to Public Enemy and such. Has he now earned respect?
All I know of Flo Rida is his I guess 4 succesful singles, that for sure he's not an album artist, and that his image does NOTHING for me.

Flo Ridas chart history on Billboards R&B chart basically answers the question
Low #9 Elevator #52 Right Round #63 Sugar #100 Shone #81
And no MC Hammer is not taken seriously loll

He is not taken seriously within the hip hop community and it's not because he's too pop. It's because he IS pop. I don't think he's even sent a song for Urban adds since "Low" was released.

ROFL, I'm gonna take a wild guess and say no. Flo Rida seems as hip-hop as Ke$ha to me these days.

Flo Rida is best at Pop-Rap,which nothing is wrong with that. But he'd be better releasing EP's and promoting those instead of a whole album.
Idk about being taken seriously, but he can get down on some rap tracks("Fresh I Stay"&"Shone")

Thanks for the replies, guys. Many of them very funny Well it actually kind of confirmed my assumptions of somebody who doesn't listen to hip hop radio stations. For sure there's no love for him here in this thread. I'm surprised no fans have showed up yet to defend him. For him to have those huge to very decent 4 or 5 hits... somebody must be loving him and he must be doing something right... ??? but not for urban. So since Low he didn't send anything else to urban!? Not even tried to follow up and failed?? I don't know exactly what turns people off. For sure his songs work in pop radio. To me his image/looks didn't work AT ALL and 2 years ago I saw him performing live and it was just BAD.

He knows what fills his bank account, so I can't hate on that. He's not hip hop really at all though, he's a smart guy though and does what he does well imo. I don't like his music personally, but still respect him strangely enough. He does pop-rap or whatever you would call the hybrid of that well, I think if he faded from that and really went for legitimate/raw hip hop he wouldn't be cracking those insane numbers (well for singles, album sales are a little different for him) that he is known for. lol who am I kidding, he would flop royally if he did that lmao.

The better question is this, "Was Flo Rida taken seriously by the hip hop community?" The answer to that is yes, but at this point in time, absolutely not. I felt that he had some street cred early on and was taken seriously, but then his music became more Pop-oriented and that just wasn't accepted by what was his core audience.

No he was never taken seriously. When Low was an urban hit he was seen the same way he was by the pop community. People thought he was just another random rapper and probably wouldnt have another hit, and at urban radio that was completely true

Idk, I think there's something wrong with the expectation that black artists aren't serious artists if they aren't accepted by the hip-hop community, or that black artists have to do well on Urban to be respected - if people choose to put out pop/rap, that's their choice IMO, and it shouldn't be less respectable than if they'd chosen to put out R&B - I guess I just don't feel like Trey Songz and Chris Brown are ingenious just cause they do well on Urban

Does Florida even release his own songs? I always hear him featured in other songs.

He's been featured on a song or two that's done well outside the US; but most of his singles are what gets airplay, not his features.

My first thought: Of course not, lol. He's a joke. Paused and really thought about it then came up with: Is Flo Rida taken seriously by anyone?

I agree with the poster who said that who cares if the hip hop community accepts him or not. They aren't paying his bills. The music buying public want to buy something from someone who can stay out of jail or keep themselves from saying something crazy and rude every time they open their mouths.

someone who can stay out of jail. I just died laughing at the idea of Flo Rida being arrested for anything. Honestly, it's hard to picture him with any sort of street cred. I mean, even Bruno got busted. But Flo Rida? No.
