^ "If" should have gone to #1 on the Hot 100. It's hard to believe that it didn't....but oh well. I'm also pleasantly surprised to see "Linger" by the Cranberries. I think people weren't used to the sexified Janet at that point, it was still relatively new at that point.

^I suppose it could have been "Macarena" at No. 1. Michael Jackson's 90s work is nowhere near as revered as Off the Wall/Thriller, so no surprise in "just" two entries. And Mimi's entry is one more than she usually gets. Think of all the lists/features where she doesn't place at all. i would choose Always Be My Baby over Fantasy in terms of longevity. The radio stations prove that. Just sayin...

i would choose Always Be My Baby over Fantasy in terms of longevity. The radio stations prove that. Just sayin... They actually usually get around the same amount of recurrent airplay. And in terms of impact, Fantasy + the remix trump 'Always Be My Baby'. They're both classics in Mariah's catalog but on a scale, I guess 'Fantasy' will always rank higher.

At one time, their recurrent was closer. But the last time we saw numbers, ABMB was getting far more play than "Fantasy" (talking about 200+ more spins a week- that's thanks to AC play). 'Fantasy's" airplay had picked up, though, compared to what it had been getting pre-Emancipation.

'Fantasy's" airplay had picked up, though, compared to what it had been getting pre-Emancipation. That particular day/week we had numbers could have been a fluke, we can assume, since we don't have that kind of info on a regular basis. And ABMB may be more AC radio-friendly for its "lighter" sound when compared to 'Fantasy' so that explains it. As I already said, though, there's no denying Fantasy's impact is far deeper.

No, it wasn't just one week, it was an ongoing trend- I had been doing weekly checks/updates at one point. :) ABMB would be more fitting for recurrent AC play. I also agree that "Fantasy" had a bigger impact, though like most Mimi titles, neither track gets much when attention when critics compile best-of features.
It's possible that Slant will include Butterfly in a 90s albums list, as it did include it in its 50 Pop Albums feature. Up until now, Butterfly's only had a couple notable best-of citations.

Always Be My Baby was typically pulling in 200-300 spins per week and Fantasy was pulling in around 25-50. There was a huge difference in their airplay. Mariahs uptempo 90s lead off singles typically pull in very little airplay. Always Be My Baby is one of her few non-Walter Afanasieff ballads from her pre-Emancipation career that pulls in considerable airplay

Yes- and then ABMB swelled to 400-500 spins a week, while "Fantasy" increased to 100-150/week. Big difference.
Anyhow, I'm most surprised that "...Baby One More Time" didn't appear, being that it's racked up a decent amount of acclaim (aside from that, "Toxic" is Spears' other notable critical hit- track or album- and that placed well on Slant's 2000s list).

I'm hoping for at least one Björk single from Post to be in the remainder of the list but I'm not holding my breath. I'm glad the one single from Post that made it outranked all the other singles from Björk on this list.

I'm generally happy with the list, but yeah, I'm surprised that Gangsta's Paradise wasn't in it.
