^Of those singles, "Secret" appeared on a handful of year-end lists. Sometimes, the lead single gets the most attention/acclaim ("Ray of Light, though, would be one exception).
"Take a Bow" didn't get much critical love (maybe because it was the most commercial of the singles), but I like it. She brought something different to the Babyface canon (working with live strings, for instance, which he says he had not done before).

Yes it was huge in it's day but its not usually mentioned as a classic Madge song which IMO it is.

I'm waiting on janet to appear. Same here. Kinda crazy. Regarding "Secret", I like it. But I like every other single from that album ("Bedtime Story", "Take a Bow", Human Nature") much much more than "Secret". I think that era was Madonna's best single-wise. Going back a bit to I'll Remember, one of my Top 5 favourite Madonna songs, leading into Secret, definitely in my Top 10, Take A Bow, Bedtime Story and Human Nature. All really great songs and none of which I would feel would be out of place on a Best of the 90s list.

40-21:
Here's Janet- believe it or not, this is only the second notable best-of list that "If" has been featured on (the other being the 10,001 Songs addendum to that 1,001 Songs... book). And, Madonna's count increases to three. Not surprised by "Erotica" (agiven the image), but "Deeper and Deeper" is a surprise. Will be disappointing if "Vogue" doesn't make the cut.
Radiohead now has four entries.
40. The Cardigans, "Lovefool" 39. En Vogue, "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" 38. The Cranberries, "Linger" 37. Radiohead, "Creep" 36. Madonna, "Deeper and Deeper" 35. Björk, "Jóga" 34. Madonna, "Erotica" 33. Blur, "Song 2" 32. U2, "One" 31. Massive Attack, "Teardrop" 30. George Michael, "Freedom 90" 29. Wu-Tang Clan, "Protect Ya Neck" 28. Mazzy Star, "Fade Into You" 27. Radiohead, "Paranoid Android" 26. Beck, "Where It's At" 25. Radiohead, "Karma Police" 24. Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" 23. Massive Attack, "Unfinished Sympathy" 22. Janet Jackson, "If" 21. Portishead, "Glory Box"

Take out Wu Tang Clan, and that is a very inventive and adventurous top 40 so far.

I never understood why 'If' by Janet didn't get more critical acclaim, or reach #1. That song was insane at the time.

^That, and the lack of recurrent airplay it receives. It's a definite fan favorite, and the video features one of her most notable dance routines.

I expected to see "One" in the top 20.
Looks like Radiohead will be the artist with the most entries, barring a surprise shutout of their tunes in the next installment.
And cool to see "Freedom" get a spot that high.

Yeah. I always thought "If" was #1. That's my favorite video during the janet. era.

^ "If" should have gone to #1 on the Hot 100. It's hard to believe that it didn't....but oh well.
I'm also pleasantly surprised to see "Linger" by the Cranberries.

"Groove is in the Heart" was No. 2 on Slant's greatest dance songs list (one notch ahead of "Vogue"), so I'd expect to see that in there.
Nirvana and Radiohead should at least have one more entry; I'd think Madonna will have 1-2 more. And then maybe tracks like "...Baby One More Time," "Doo Wop," maybe Beastie Boys? many acclaimed tracks of the 90s- and just 20 spots left. Should be an intriguing top 20.

"7"? ...really? Yeah, really. That single was genius; the instrumentation, the deep vocal layering (all voices were by Prince)...plus he's one of the most respected artists of the past 30 years. Even though his critical and commercial peak was in the 80s, he still deserves mention in the "Best of the 90s."

Yes- "7" is in the same boat as "Remember the Time." Neither one is among the acts' most acclaimed tracks, but if one had to choose a track from each for a Best of 90s list, no shame in including them.

Acts with multiple entries thus far: Radiohead: 4 Madonna: 3 Nirvana: 3 Bjork: 3 Lauryn Hill: 3 (one solo, two with Fugees) U2: 2 Blur: 2 Massive Attack: 2 Portishead: 2 Michael Jackson: 2 (one solo, one duet) Janet Jackson: 2 (one solo, one duet) Pavement: 2 Public Enemy: 2 Smashing Pumpkins: 2 Notorious B.I.G.: 2 Erykah Badu: 2
I think I got them all. So, 16 acts comprise 37 of the top 100. (with more likely to add to their total)

What do you all think about Kylie "Confide In Me" being on the list?

Slant does give props to pop acts more than some other outlets, but I don't know about Kylie appearing. It's not a bad track, but best of a decade?

I'm hoping for at least one Björk single from Post to be in the remainder of the list but I'm not holding my breath.

^I suppose it could have been "Macarena" at No. 1. Michael Jackson's 90s work is nowhere near as revered as Off the Wall/Thriller, so no surprise in "just" two entries. And Mimi's entry is one more than she usually gets. Think of all the lists/features where she doesn't place at all.
