February!? Ugh. Either way, I'm glad we're getting something new. It's been ages.
TIP remains one of my go-to summer albums. I pull it out every year and spin it like crazy.
*edit* all this La Roux talk just made me go online and buy the Trouble In Paradise vinyl boxset that I always wanted to get but never did. Seriously, some of my favorite art direction for an album/era EVER. It's so purty... and so unnecessary. But whatever.

LOVE IT SHES BACK GET YOUR WEAVES GLUED DOWN BITCHES
on the first listen I really like it, the production doesn't sound as full as it did on Trouble In Paradise but I'll see how it grows. It's just so fucking nice seeing and hearing Elly again she looks so good in the video.

I can't believe this comes out this week! So excited.
Once I got used to that first verse on IWOL, it grew into such an earworm. The pre-chorus, chorus and bridge are so good. The build-up on "Gullible Fool," once the instrumental drops, ACE. And "Automatic Driver" is such a cute groove. Three for three so far.
Also, her visuals and art direction have been so on point. For an independent artist, she is turning it out.

I've made it through my first few spins, I'm kind of torn at the moment. In terms of the production, holy sh*t. SHE. ATE. IT. Albums this immaculately produced do not come along very often, every guitar lick, every bassline, every synth, every background vocal, like you just know she sweats the sh*t out of every tiny detail of these instrumentals. And every song is such a damn groove. I'm hearing Niles, Sly & Robbie, George Michael, Terence Trent D'Arby, etc. It really is an incredible body of work production-wise.
But on the flip side, everything is so overly thought-out and put together, I'm not getting a lot of joy listening to it. Not that Elly has ever been a "joyful" artist, lol, but this is definitely her heaviest album. The production is dense, the running times are long, her vocals can be one-note/chilly and the songs need a RELEASE. Sometimes that comes, sometimes it doesn't, the effect can be suffocating over an entire album.
It's definitely a body of work I admire right from the jump though. How she takes all of those influences I love and filters them through her own lens and makes it all sound new and fresh. We'll see if the album opens up and breathes for me a tad more with repeated listens.

^^ I agree the production is stellar, the songs generally sound too similar for me though. I enjoy them all, but even the tempo of them is all very similar.
ALSO I want that TIP boxset. I adore that album. Staple summer record.

Okay, this is on repeat now. I do agree that the tempo is similar throughout, even "Gullible Fool" once the beat drops, lol. So much for a closing ballad. It's kind of the album's strength and it's weakness. I can put this on and let it play through over and over again and it's such a groove. But then the individual tracks don't shine as much as they could because it plays like one long sequence.
There isn't a bum note on it though and when you only have eight tracks, you better deliver on every one. I especially love her play with song structure, the melody switch-ups and the build-ups in the instrumentals. They really start to expose themselves on repeated listens. Also the fact that she lets the instrumentals ride out, the streaming era has killed that and it devastates me. The last 50 seconds of "IWOL" is practically the best pop song of 2020, so glad we got more instrumental on the album version than the single edit.
She seems to be in a really good place this time around and she said she's already writing songs for the next album. Hopefully we won't have to wait a bazillion years for the next one.

Yeah, it's grown and grown on me in a big way. Can't get enough of it right now. I love how some of the songs have about five hooks that slowly build as the song progresses. They've sort of revealed themselves with repeated listens and I love that. Agree on GF, I don't love it but that instrumental is pretty good.
