This Day in Black History: Jan. 27, 1991 Whitney Houston sang the National Anthem at Super Bowl XXV. By Dominique Zonyéé Posted: 01/27/2014 12:00 AM EST Whitney Houston was in her prime. She already released critically acclaimed albums Whitney Houston and Whitney, won several Grammy Awards for hits “Saving All My Love For You” and her successful albums. But nothing catapulted her career like her Jan. 30, 1991, performance of the “Star-Spangled Banner” at Super Bowl XXV. Houston’s poise and control allowed her to hit every note, sending a surge of American pride, which transcended from the stadium to the millions of viewers at home during the heart of the Persian Gulf War. Her performance of the “Star-Spangled Banner” also marked the first time it was broadcast in countries outside of North America and the United Kingdom. Although the performance was lip-syncing to a recording of the song, the rendition was released as a single due to popular demand and still remains arguably one of the greatest performances of the “Star-Spangled Banner.”

Not sure what's the point of this documentary, but anyway...... Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown's wedding video unearthed EXCLUSIVE: Never-before-seen video of Whitney Houston's wedding unearthed as daughter Bobbi Kristina and her new husband pay tribute to their 'Royal Mom' New wedding video shows tragic singer Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown sharing an intimate dance at lavish 1992 ceremony Their daughter Bobbi Kristina tells filmmaker Daphne Barak she is still grieving ahead of the second anniversary of Whitney's death Whitney was pregnant at wedding - but didn't find out until honeymoon, daughter reveals Gazing into each other’s eyes, Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown sway on the dancefloor as they celebrate their wedding in a haunting video that only serves to highlight just how tragic their union was to become. It is footage that will be both difficult and inspiring for daughter Bobbi Kristina to watch as she admits she is still struggling to recover from her mother's death in a revealing interview with feted documentary maker Daphne Barak, who unearthed the video. As Whitney the bride regally embraces a line of children at the ceremony, all dressed in white and playing classical music with small violins, Bobbi, now 20 and married only weeks ago, tells Daphne: ‘She WAS royal. People don’t know that about her…I called her My Royal Woman’ Indeed, as they croon to each other at the lavish wedding on July 18, 1992, Whitney and Bobby - who were very much considered music's odd couple at the time - look every inch royalty, with Bobby even teasingly wearing one Whitney’s earrings. The wedding, held at Whitney’s $10 million home in Mendham, New Jersey, was an excessive affair, attended by a guest list of 800 – a figure Brown was later to sigh was ‘too much'. Both the bride and groom wore white, with Whitney’s dress created out of French lace by Mark Bouwer and costing $40,000, and the wedding party dressed in shades of purple, the star’s favourite colour. It is all a far cry from the circumstances of how Whitney’s life would end on February 11, 2012, after she was found dead in a bathtub at The Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles, aged just 48. The couple had divorced in 2006 following a fiery and very public marriage. Left with this memento of one of the happiest days of her parents’ lives, Bobbi reveals: ‘I was there…she was pregnant with me, but she didn’t know. They found out about me during their honeymoon.’ Speaking about her parents' wedding, Bobbi adds: ‘I love her dress, and the headpiece, the matching earrings…Mom is beautiful. You see, you picked it up, how royal she was.’ New film: Documentary maker Daphne Barak chats to Bobbi Kristina Brown at home in Georgia ‘She used to call me ‘Stina,’ Bobbi tells Daphne as it becomes clear that time is not helping the grief-stricken daughter: ‘I miss her like hell. She taught me everything. Now I’m working on my career, but also on myself. ‘I’m working on learning how to be a woman without the woman who taught me to be a woman.’ Referring to the star she also called ‘Lioness’ because of her Leo birth sign, Bobbi says the upcoming anniversary of her mother’s death makes her realise just how much people did not really know Whitney. ‘People did not know her’, she tells Daphne: ‘They write things. But for me, she wasn’t Whitney Houston.' Dedicated to embarking on a music career like her mother, she says: ‘I am the only one who can sing her songs like she did. She always said that if they would make a film about her, only I could play her. ‘She taught me how to sing Acapella. She taught me that singing Acapella would make my voice stronger and stronger. She taught me Gospel, she taught me for 18 years how to be royal, how to be her daughter, a woman…I am very proud of her.’ On the video, images of the reception filled with candles and lavender and white orchid arrangements alongside an 18-layer cake flash up on screen, as A-list guests ranging from Donald Trump to Whitney’s aunt Dionne Warwick and even P Diddy, can be seen sipping Cristal and Dom Perignon champagne. Heartbroken: Bobbi Kristina Brown says: 'I called my mom my Royal Woman'. She's seen here with her parents in New York in 1994 Stooping to thank the line of children musicians, Whitney tells them: ‘Thank-you, thank-you for the treat…come, give me a kiss.' As Daphne asks what Bobbi would want the world to know about Whitney, Bobbi pauses: ‘That she had a heart, you could not fall in love with her. Even if she cast you off - she so lovable.’ Sadly, it is patently clear just how much Whitney and Bobby were thrilled to be expecting baby Bobbi. The couple had met at the Soul Train Music Awards in 1989 and in an interview on their marriage in Vanity Fair in December 1992, Whitney, then three-months pregnant, prophesised: ‘I think it’s a girl…’ The couple kissed and Brown patted Whitney’s stomach, adding: ‘I’m gonna spoil that baby girl….I want presents. Lots of presents. Shoes and dresses and diamonds and all that for her.’ ‘You want everything, baby’, Whitney replied….’We’ll see, we’ll see.’ More of the 25-minute wedding video will be aired globally next month in a Daphne Barak special.Filmmaker Daphne, who was also on hand to watch some of Amy Winehouse’s tragic last days in St Lucia, tells MailOnline: ‘When I saw Whitney in the video she looked like Princess Diana, so regal. In her imagination, she was royal and Bobby was her prince.

Now Lord knows my heart breaks for Bobbi Kris, but she's really delusional if she thinks she's the only one who could play Whitney in a movie and the only one who can sing Whitney's songs. We all know that's not true. I've heard her sing I'm Your Baby Tonight on that reality show and it was nowhere near how Whitney sang it, I think she even forgot some of the lyrics.
She needs to come back down to reality. Hopefully age and maturity will do that in the coming years because she can't go around publicly saying things like this and not expect people to not go in on her.

Do we have complete confirmation that her SSB at the SuperBowl was mimed? I have read where it was, that it wasn't, etc...
Album News:
I was reading on billboard.com today about Clives Grammy party and he is quoted as saying he is working on Whitney's 1st Live album and that he was committed to keeping her memory/legacy alive!
This makes me very happy

Whitney may have been singing to the prerecorded track at the SB, but what we heard was primarily the prerecorded track. Doesn't matter, though, as it's gotta be just about the greatest performance of the song, period. Plus, she sang it all live on Welcome Home Heroes, and it was another terrific performance.

This makes me very happy I guess she did technically lipsynch it, but she sang along to the recorded track. I heard it was required to lip back then during the Superbowl. But here she sang it completely live in 1991, and it sounds just as good to me. Yes, Clive said he's working on a live album release.

I'm surprised "Exhale" is ranked at #10. Thought it would have been ranked higher.

My heart is still broken, can't believe it's been 2 years. She was such a huge part of my childhood, my teenage years, my entire life, it's still very surreal that she's no longer walking this earth. I miss her presence so much, I miss her voice, I miss anticipating any new projects from her, I miss being on the edge of my seat and being excited watching her perform live, I miss seeing new pictures of her, I miss Whitney Houston. I always will. She was so kind to me when I met her, she was my very first concert in 1999 during the My Love Is Your Love tour, I have so many memories of her throughout my life, she brought me so much joy. It was a roller coaster of emotions being a Whitney fan during her hard times, but I never left her side. I always supported her and prayed for her.
Her legacy will always, always, always live on. She will never be forgotten. I will keep her memory alive as long as I'm here.

Whitney Houston's 20 Biggest Billboard Hits: A Look at Her Legendary Chart Career The late Whitney Houston's legacy on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart is legendary. Her biggest single on the Hot 100 chart is her iconic "I Will Always Love You," from her film "The Bodyguard." The track spent a staggering 14 weeks atop the list and at the time was the longest-running No. 1 single in history. Billboard has compiled Houston's top 20 Hot 100 singles, and unsurprisingly, "I Will Always Love You" tops the tally. It is followed by the buoyant "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)," which was her fourth of 11 career No. 1s on the list. All 11 of her No. 1 hits are present on the recap (below) and also happen to comprise the entire top 11. Rank - Title - (Year) - Hot 100 Peak Position (weeks spent at No. 1) 1. "I Will Always Love You" (1992) - No. 1 (for 14 weeks) 2. "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" (1987) - No. 1 (2 weeks) 3. "Greatest Love Of All" (1986) - No. 1 (3 weeks) 4. "All The Man That I Need" (1990) - No. 1 (2 weeks) 5. "I'm Your Baby Tonight" (1990) - No. 1 (1 week) 6. "So Emotional" (1987) - No. 1 (1 week) 7. "How Will I Know" (1985) - No. 1 (2 weeks) 8. "Didn't We Almost Have It All" (1987) - No. 1 (2 weeks) 9. "Saving All My Love For You" (1985) - No. 1 (1 week) 10. "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" (1995) - No. 1 (1 week) 11. "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" (1988) - No. 1 (2 weeks) 12. "My Love Is Your Love" (1999) - No. 4 13. "Heartbreak Hotel" (featuring Faith Evans & Kelly Price) (1999) - No. 2 14. "You Give Good Love" (1985) - No. 3 15. "I Have Nothing" (1993) - No. 4 16. "One Moment In Time" (1988) - No. 5 17. "I Believe In You and Me" (1996) - No. 4 18. "I'm Every Woman" (1993) - No. 4 19. "Count On Me" (Whitney Houston & CeCe Winans) (1996) - No. 8 20. "It's Not Right But It's Okay" (1999) - No. 4 This ranking is based on actual performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 chart. Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least. To ensure equitable representation of the biggest hits from each era, certain time frames were weighted to account for the difference between turnover rates from those years.

Top 50 'Love' Songs of All Time Articles /List |Chart Beat By Fred Bronson | February 12, 2014 10:35 AM EST In honor of Valentine's Day, we've ranked the biggest 'Love' songs to ever hit the Hot 100 6. "I Will Always Love You" - Whitney Houston Hot 100 Peak: No. 1 for 14 weeks (1992) Houston’s signature song was originally a No. 1 hit for the woman who composed the tune, Dolly Parton. Her version topped the Hot Country Songs chart in 1974 and again in 1982. 26. "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" - Whitney Houston Hot 100 Peak: No. 1 for two weeks (1987) George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam wrote “How Will I Know” for Houston. Asked to submit another song, they sent “Waiting for a Star to Fall,” and when the answer was no, they recorded it themselves as Boy Meets Girl. Encouraged to try again, it only took them two days to write “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me).” This time, Clive Davis said yes. 37. "Greatest Love of All" - Whitney Houston Hot 100 Peak: 1 for three weeks (1986) Michael Masser and Linda Creed wrote this song for the film “The Greatest,” a Muhammad Ali biopic. George Benson’s soundtrack single peaked at No. 24 in 1977. Later, when Houston auditioned for Clive Davis, she performed the song, and then it became the B-side of her first Arista single, “You Give Good Love.” Months later, radio airplay forced it out as the fifth single from Houston’s debut album. www.billboard.com/articles/list/1538839/top-50-love-songs-of-all-time

It's nice that Billboard posts the Whitney articles, but it's the same ones from past years, with no fresh takes on em.

Billboard's Top 50 Movie Songs Of All Time In honor of the Oscars, we've ranked the biggest film songs to ever hit the Hot 100. Movies and music have been a natural combination ever since sound was first added to moving images. Whether a film is a tear-jerking drama, an action-packed thriller or a side-splitting comedy, the right song at the right moment will always elevate the impact of a scene. Not only that, many songs written for films have stood on their own, with the popularity of some eclipsing the movies that inspired them. With the 86th Academy Awards approaching, here's a look back at the 50 biggest Hot 100 hits that arose from being featured on the silver screen. This ranking is based on actual performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 chart. Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least. To ensure equitable representation of the biggest hits from each era, certain time frames were weighted to account for the difference between turnover rates from those years. 9. "I Will Always Love You" - Whitney Houston Hot 100 Peak Position: 1 (14 weeks), Peak Date: 11/28/1992 Dolly Parton wrote "I Will Always Love You" in 1973 but it found its way onto 1992's soundtrack for "The Bodyguard" after star Kevin Costner played Linda Ronstadt's 1975 version for Whitney Houston. Houston's smash-hit cover reigned on the Hot 100 for 14 weeks and became her signature song. www.billboard.com/articles/list/5922814/top-50-movie-songs-of-all-timeThe #1 song was "You Light Up My Life" by Debbie Boone. I'm confused as to how Whitney's "I Will Always Love You" wasn't in the top 5, much less #1, as it is the most successful single from a movie soundtrack and spent the most weeks at #1 out of any other song from a movie, no?

I've been listening to the My Love is Your Love album a lot the past couple of days and watching interviews from that era. It's weird to say but I miss her.

Wow, love this article about Whitney that one of her background singers wrote. Touching to say the least.
Experiencing Whitney Houston and Purpose June 5, 2013 at 3:32am
Most people know I sang with Whitney for a long time, so every now and then I run across a message in my FB inbox about Whitney Houston that touches me, and I respond to it. This happened today.
The message brought back many memories of an ongoing conversation she and I would have about "Purpose". When you're raised in the church, one thing you'll hear frequently is "God has a purpose for your life". So Nippy and I would discuss this during a lot of our Bible conversations.
You gotta remember, this was during The Body Guard, Waiting To Exhale, Preacher's Wife, and Cinderella years of her career. She was on top of the world and climbing! Understanding and knowing she had purpose was paramount to her! So she would come to me sometimes and talk about God's purpose for her life.
In many ways, Whitney traveled a harder road than Michael Jackson where the public was concerned. Whitney was constantly bombarded with criticism by the public and media throughout her entire career, having entered the genre of Pop music as a "Black Female Artist" at a time when it was not the norm, and going on to become an iconic figure in the music and film industry.
Her unprecedented "Voice" became "The Voice" for millions world wide, while at the same time, she was examined on a microscopic level every chance the media could get. The world often embraced The Voice but criticized the Artist.
Whitney understood that our purpose is greater than our flaws, and that the love and the message God placed within her was greater than Whitney Houston, down to her choices in songs. When it came down to her purpose in the world, her heart was only to please God with a message of love, hope, and faith. She was faithful to spreading the message of Jesus Christ and smart enough to know how to share her Faith as a Christian singing secular music, and in a world that ridiculed her human frailties on so many other levels.
She would say sometimes, "Well, they hated Jesus too!" or "One day they sing your praises and the next day you're being crucified on the cross". She understood the weight of responsibility that was on her and it was hard! I was out there. I saw it. It was painful, it was heartbreaking, it was cruel, it was so many things, but she forged ahead. I wish I could put into words the pain she experienced sometimes, but I can't, I just know what it looked like on her, and in her eyes when she would allow it to show.
You can't know what it's like to feel the weight of the whole world watching you, and the opinions of the human race attacking you constantly, you can only imagine it on some level relative to the extent of your own reach as part of humanity, so don't think you can ever assume or understand what it was like for her. You can't.
If all the voices could be heard of all the people who's lives were touched or changed in a moment that a lyric or phrase she sang or a performance made the difference in whatever was going on in their lives, the sound would be deafening. You cannot fathom such great purpose. Whitney understood this and was devoted to it deep within her heart. Her gift was from God and great, her purpose was greater. She understood this.
Say what you will, it won't change the truth, or matter in the biggest possible picture of the history of the human race, people impact history in different ways. Whitney Houston's impact on the world is beyond our knowing in detail, her impact on culture worldwide, her impact on religion, her impact on politics, and her impact on the hearts of human beings now and in the future has it's place in God's purpose for her life, and for humanity, and this she knew well. She held on to this, and walked out on that stage, and gave it her all, as she gave God all the glory and credit for it.
To the person who wrote me today, I pray that what I've written brings you some comfort and answers, knowing that like you, her Faith in God was the most important thing to her.

Ive been listening to that era lately too.. It reminds me of Spring/Summer (Winter needs to end already, Im in NJ) I love all the interviews... Some of the performances from that era?? OMG IMO some of them were better then The Bodyguard era. She is such a Legend!!! GAWD YES. The tour during that era was epic.

This is horrible, why are they bringing their drama to twitter for all of the public to see???? It looks like Nick Gordon and Whitney's nephew, Gary Michael Houston, got into a physical altercation, and gossip blogs got ahold of it now. Poor Whitney.... Awful, just awful.

Happy 21st birthday to Bobbi Kristina
Here Whitney is on this exact day in 2010 singing Happy Birthday and Who Would Imagine A King, she sounds so good! Such a beautiful and touching moment that she shared on stage.

I'm more than ready for the live album. I'm listening to a 1998 concert on youtube right now and she really was the best live vocal performer of our generation as far as I'm concerned.

I was just revisiting her 1994 South Africa concert these days, and ohhh my, how glorious was that show?!
It was amazing how those big-voiced divas, in their peak, did not need any heavy dance routine or special effects to stage a great show, the fun was in enjoying their powerful voices and that's it, nothing more was really needed.
RIP Nippy.
