Goes for adds today (1/25).
After finding the majority of the Decemberists' output that I've heard over the years to be unbearably pretentious (especially the last album), I'm surprised that I found myself enjoying this song quite a bit. It's my understanding, though, that their new album is very straightforward and streamlined, and largely acoustic-driven.
Given that this new record, The King Is Dead (apparently a Michael Jackson reference), has been getting the hardest push I've ever seen for the band, in terms of mainstream promotion, and given the current climate on the Alternative format (The Black Keys, Mumford & Sons, Kings of Leon, Broken Bells, etc.), I'd be heartbroken if this song didn't give the band their first taste of success on Alternative radio.

I liked me some Crane Wife, actually. And definitely "16 Military Wives." I actually intended to make that parent album my entry point for the Decemberists.
The new album title will give them lots of Smiths comparisons, though (if it hasn't already).

I found "Down By The Water" pleasantly surprising. I'll have to check this out.

While I wouldn't say I found their output particularly pretentious (perhaps I have a high tolerance for pretense and/or am pretentious), I did find it largely unexceptional, so I, too, was surprised to have a positive first impression of this when I heard it over the weekend.

Andrew, you're clearly the definition of pretentious. I liked "Down by the Water." I'll have to check this out. Honestly, I've never heard any of their other material.

#1 on the sales charts with 93,500 sold. Scheisse!
Also cool is that Script got #3 and Social D got #4.

This is an excellent track, as was "Down by the Water".

I heard this song for the first time today. It's pretty good.
Wait, the Decemberists now have a #1 album? Following Cake, this is pretty nuts, but based on the numbers you gave, the Decemberists have legit top spot numbers. Wow, I knew they were fairly big, but I didn't know that they were THAT big.

#1 on the sales charts with 93,500 sold. Scheisse! Yeah, had I not had to go to work this morning, I would've posted this myself. I mean, I knew it's "been getting the hardest push I've ever seen for the band, in terms of mainstream promotion," but Jesus. Hats off to them. Here's a funny article about it. (Too bad it wasn't Social D with the #1 album.)

Is this the first time that they've ever reached the top 50 of the alternative chart? While they are a bit out there, they're popular enough that I kinda have to say, alternative radio is a bit behind the times with these guys if that's the case.

Their last album had no singles, and the only other single they've ever released to alternative was "O Valencia". I can't find any chart data for it.

I won tickets to their soundcheck yesterday (thanks KFOG! :) ) & it was pretty awesome. They played a few songs & then since not very many of us actually showed up, they invited us onstage to sing along! The group of us on the right (except for the far right one with a guitar, that's a band member) were the contest winners. That's me in the middle of them! (the one wearing a hat.) We had such an awesome time. :) Another one:

I've just fallen in love with this album... although "Rox in the Box" is a total Newfie song ripoff (accordion parts).
I hope this gets at least Top 20 and warrants another single release.
