Rihanna, Eminem, Lady Gaga Lead Billboard Music Awards FinalistsApril 13, 2011By Billboard Staff Rihanna, Eminem, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber lead the finalists for the 2011 Billboard Music Awards, which were announced Wednesday morning (Apr. 13) at a press conference in Las Vegas. Rihanna takes the lead as a finalist in 18 award categories, including Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Female Artist, Top R&B Artist and Top Dance/Electronic Artist. "Love the Way You Lie," her chart-topping collaboration with Eminem, places her as a contender in six song categories. Lady Gaga follows as a finalist in 12 categories, with three releases all competing for Top Dance/Electronic Album: "The Fame," "The Fame Monster" and "The Remix." Other Top New Artist contenders are Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj and Taio Cruz, whose song "Dynamite" is up for five awards including Top Hot 100 Song. but TiK Tok was #1 for Hot 100 Songs and it wasn't nominated... That was from the Dec. 2009 to Nov. 2010 period; the awards are from the Mar. 2010 to Feb. 2011 period, which excludes all weeks TT spent at no. 1, greatly cutting its points. NYN and HSS should have been strong contenders, though. Maybe BB arbitrarily is choosing the contenders, instead of those with the highest points. I think Hot 100 artist is between Rihanna and Katy.

If they go solely by points, there are obvious wins:
Album: "Recovery"
Album Artist: Taylor Swift

But note that on the Billboard Year-End Charts, Lady Gaga came out as the Top Artist.
Plus, the Billboard Music Awards are pretty much solely based off of charting and sales (so radio and sales, basically), and although Bieber has fantastic sales, Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga have fantastic sales and fantastic chart runs, the latter of which JB is lacking.
That's just my reasoning behind it. Eminem, Katy, and RiRi could easily sweep, as well, but I'm pegging it to be a Gaga/Bruno night.

Billboard said they're running March 10-March 11, so that will change the scope of what the awards will look like.
Eminem will obviously still take Album, but that greatly decreases Gaga's influence.

^ I think they weren't sure if the categories meant R&B songs/artists/albums that were the most popular, or songs/artists/albums that were the most popular on the R&B charts.

I think for Pop/Rock/R&B/Rap/Country categories, nominees and winners will be defined by success on Billboard 200 and Hot 100, rather than the specific genre charts. My guess, at least.
Notice no Rap artists nominated in R&B charts though don't the R&B/Hip Hop charts in Billboard include all "urban" artists/tracks? Also - Train didn't get any rock airplay but HSS is nominated for Rock Song. I think Billboard just categorized it as rock for these awards but it's H100 success is what got it the nomination...and if that is the system, it'll obviously win there.

10 Best Billboard Music Awards PerformancesLike the Billboard charts themselves, the Billboard Music Awards has a history of celebrating a diverse cross-section of the music landscape. From the pitch-black rock of Metallica's "Unforgiven II" to the seductive pop of Britney Spears' "I'm a Slave 4 U" to the soulful R&B of Alicia Keys' "A Woman's Worth," the ceremony has collected music's biggest stars and let their hits shine in front of millions. Before the 2011 Billboard Music Awards brings artists like Rihanna, the Black Eyed Peas, Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum and Taio Cruz to the stage, take a look back at 10 of the show's most memorable performances, and tell us which one you think was the all-time best. 1. Britney Spears, 2001 "I'm A Slave 4 U""I'm a Slave 4 U" was already one of Britney Spears' most seductive singles, but the pop star took the "Britney" track to an eruptive level when she performed the single in front of the Bellagio's famous fountain. Sporting a sleek black outfit accentuated by a navel-baring top, Britney was in the zone as she and her dancers flawlessly performed the sexy choreography. 2. Mariah Carey, 1999 "I Still Believe"In one of a lifetime's worth of powerhouse performances, Mariah Carey took the Billboard Music Awards stage in 1999 to gracefully deliver her ballad "I Still Believe." Afterward, she was joined onstage by Queen Latifah and Stevie Wonder, the latter of whom told her, "We gotta sing together! 3. 'N Sync, 2000 "Just Got Paid"'N Sync's 2000 performance of "No Strings Attached" hit "Just Got Paid" demonstrates everything to fondly remember about the boy band era: colorful costume, elaborate set pieces, lock-step dance moves, and of course, the harmless pop music. Watching Justin Timberlake and the rest of the guys shimmy in their pimp suits and play-fight with another group of dancers is a perfect snapshot for an entertaining music era. 3. Metallica, 1997 "The Unforgiven 2"After being introduced by Wayne Newton and Busta Rhymes, Metallica performed "The Unforgiven II" with a sense of calculated anger and the command of the year's biggest rock act. James Hetfield led the slow build of the "Reload" highlight, and when Lars Ulrich was finished pounding away, the crowd went wild. 5. R. Kelly, 2005 "Slow Wind"R. Kelly slowed things down when he gave a poolside performance at the 2005 ceremony, but his take on "Slow Wind" was one of the most passionate performances in Billboard Music Awards history. "You're a Jamaican queen, oh yeah!/I'm an American king," the king of R&B sang while staring down the camera and the end of the clip, after getting dozens of beautiful women to sway seductively in place. 6. Nelly, 2004 "N Dey Say"After helping put St. Louis hip-hop on the map, Nelly helped bring some sharp storytelling to the 2004 Billboard Music Awards. During his performance of "N Dey Say," Nelly sat on a stool and recounted stories of single mothers, homeless men and street hustles that were played out by actors next to him. The payoff? A unified group clapping along to the beat at the end. 7. Destiny's Child, 2000 "Independent Women Pt. 1"/"Say My Name"/"Jumpin' Jumpin'" MedleyAt the time of the 2000 Billboard Music Awards, Destiny's Child was on such a hot streak with their singles that the R&B trio ended up performing three of them in an elaborate medley. After heating up the stage with "Independent Women Pt. 1," DC and their dancers seamlessly shifted gears for "Say My Name," which let Beyonce show off her dazzling voice, and then "Jumpin' Jumpin'," which became a kinetic onstage party. 8. Pink, 2003 "God Is a DJ"Before Pink remade her stage show into an acrobatic wonder, the pop star performed one of her most underrated singles, "God Is a DJ," at Billboard's 2003 ceremony. Turning the stage into her own personal turntable, Pink reached out to the disaffected, rocked out to a screeching guitar solo, and shoved one dancer's head into her crotch before writhing around on a giant record player. 9. Alicia Keys feat. Angie Stone & Eve, 2001 "A Woman's Worth"/"Brothers" MedleyAlicia Keys' 2001 performance united some of the biggest female stars in R&B, hip-hop and soul music, as Angie Stone and Eve took the stage to assist the rising singer on "Brothers." Before the trio traded lines and high notes, though, Keys hinted at the unparalleled talent she would eventually become while singing "A Woman's Worth" behind a piano. 10. Shania Twain, 1995 "If You're Not In It For Love (I'm Outta Here)"Shania Twain might have been flanked by a full band when she took the stage at the 1995 Billboard Music Awards, but she sang her hit "If You're Not In It For Love (I'm Outta Here)" as if dancing alone in her bedroom. The country star wiggled during the guitar solo, cooed each word in the verses, and belted out the song's chorus with a wide grin. She even lets out a celebratory "Woo!" at the end of the performance. www.billboard.com/#/features/the-10-best-billboard-music-awards-performances-1005127712.story?page=1

Thanks for the snarkiness, but the picks I made had absolutely nothing to do with personal taste. Tbh, I really don't like Usher, and Rihanna is still growing on me. I'm well aware that Billboard is about sales & charts, i.e., my post above in this thread from a few days ago stating my reasoning behind my choices. Usher and RiRi have been very equal in success this past year with sales, charting, singles, radio play, etc. However, I think Rihanna will take more than Usher. And I don't think that Alicia or "There Goes My Baby" will win. "OMG" was a freakin' 2010 smash, and totally wiped the floor with the other two.

Sorry if it came across that way. :) As for the categories I highlighted, I believe that the performances on the R&B chart will be crucial and going by that I think my predictions are more accurate. 'There Goes My Baby' and 'Un-Thinkable' were bigger hits on the R&B charts, with great longevity and they peaked at #1 for weeks. Rihanna didn't have enough of a presence on the R&B chart to warrant her a win either and Loud is a Pop album. We'll see what method they'll use though since I was told they may not do as I said.

IA but Rihanna is a pop artist too and her songs lean more towards pop which makes me believe Usher or Alicia might take it...but usher might as Alicia's impacted before the March timeframe, right?

That's what I was thinking...which is sad because Alicia's song was so huge...didn't it end up achieving some sort of record for most weeks at 1.

No, it was just the longest run at #1 on the R&B chart in 2010.

You make a good point. I think I was kind of basing it off of overall presence on all charts, including the BB Hot 100, which Rihanna has been dominating with Only Girl, S&M, What's My Name, Love the Way You Lie (although that was mainly Eminem), but I see your point with basing it solely off of the R&B charts. Seems more logical, but you never know with Billboard. And sorry for the snarkiness accusation. Kind of came off that way, so thanks for clearing it up. :)

There's no tribute-performance but I just can't wait to see her perform. I'm kinda worried they didn't announce a performance in the Billboard article though....just her receiving the award.
