No surprise this thread is turning into another Britney Spears discussion, these awards have mostly used her for promo since 07.
Last year sucked. 2009 was better.

If these awards are fan voting Lady GaGa will win everything again which it's really a shame because E.T. deserves to win something.

Tyler the Creator and Lady Gaga Lead MTV's O Music Award NominationsApril 05, 2011 By Associated Press Lady Gaga and Tyler the Creator lead MTV's newly inaugurated O Music Awards with three nominations each. MTV announced Tuesday the categories and nominees for its new Web-based awards show, a celebration of digital music. Categories include best fan cover, most viral dance and best music hashtag meme. Lady Gaga and rapper Tyler the Creator are among the nominees for most innovative artist and must-follow artist on Twitter. Lady Gaga is also nominated for favorite animated GIF, a kind of avatar. Tyler the Creator, of the much buzzed-about hip-hop group Odd Future, is also nominated for his remix of Lykke Li's "Follow Rivers." Winners will be decided by fan voting in social media, with the results shown in real-time. The awards will be presented in a live hour-long webcast April 28 on MTV websites and mobile apps. MTV, which is part of the Viacom-owned MTV Networks, hopes the show will do for digital music what its Video Music Awards, launched in 1984, did for the music video. As a reference to the rapidly shifting online world, even the "O" in the OMAs is being left undefined and open to interpretation by viewers. "Some elements of this will be experimental," said Dermot McCormack, head of digital media at MTV Music Group. "If there is such a thing as a beta award show, this is it." Several of the awards will go to fans or even pets. Best animal performance is a category, with nominees like a parrot dancing to Willow Smith's song "Whip My Hair." Other categories fete the new epicenters of online music, such as best independent music blog, best music discovery service and best performance series. The latter features a group of nominees that pits acclaimed online series like NPR's "Tiny Desk Concerts" and La Blogotheque's "Take Away Shows" against MTV's own "Unplugged." "We're really launching a new franchise here, something that we're investing in," says Shannon Connolly, vice president of digital music strategy for MTV Music Group. Other nominated artists include Kanye West, the Flaming Lips, Nicki Minaj, Arcade Fire and Justin Bieber. Among the non-artist nominees are the comedy site Funny or Die, the music discovery service Pandora and Andy Samberg's comedy troupe, the Lonely Island. The network says success for the O Music Awards won't be assessed by ratings or view counts, but by its cultural influence. "We won't be judging by how many streams we do on several websites," says McCormack. "We will be judging it by how much we can affect the conversation around digital music in the lead-up and beyond." www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/industry/digital-and-mobile/tyler-the-creator-and-lady-gaga-lead-mtv-1005111352.story

2011 MTV Video Music Awards Return To Los Angeles The 28th annual VMAs will air live on August 28 at 9 p.m. ET.
By MTV News Staff
Make it two in a row. After putting down roots in Los Angeles last year, the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards will return to the City of Angels on August 28 for the 28th annual celebration. The show will air live from the Nokia Theatre at L.A. Live venue at 9 p.m. (ET/PT).
"We are thrilled to return to Los Angeles where the energy of the city will help power the creative spirit of the 28th annual VMAs," MTV president Stephen Friedman said in a statement. "The city is the perfect backdrop for all the musical moments, mayhem and magic that make the VMAs such a notorious celebration."
The 2010 VMAs posted the best ratings for the show since 2002, highlighted by much-anticipated performances by Taylor Swift (who debuted her song "Innocent," which addressed 2009's Kanye West incident) and West himself, who also debuted a new song, the raunchy "Runaway." The show also featured performances by Eminem with Rihanna, Drake and Best New Artist winner Justin Bieber, B.o.B with Hayley Williams, Florence and the Machine, and Linkin Park, plus a pre-show appearance by Nicki Minaj and Black Eyed Peas mastermind will.i.am. Host Chelsea Handler kept the night humming along with some classic bits, including a skit with Lindsay Lohan and the first-ever appearance of a hot tub on the VMA stage.
And, oh yeah, did we mention Lady Gaga's infamous meat dress?
"We are proud to host the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles, the creative capital of the world. And we look forward to showcasing our city's exciting new downtown entertainment attractions," said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa of the show's return to his city.
To watch video of last year's biggest moments, get the full list of last year's show winners, and check out fashion and music commentary from the shows' red carpets, go to VMA.MTV.com. Information about nominations, performers, the host and presenters will be announced at a later date.

I think Britney has a concert the day of the VMAS... Predictable >:( I bet her team did that on purpose just to have an excuse to justify her lazyness again Too bad the VMAS are 8/28 and her summer tour ends 8/13. #pressed

If "Bad Romance" beat "Telephone", then "Born This Way" will beat "Judas".

If "Bad Romance" beat "Telephone", then "Born This Way" will beat "Judas". Bad Romance was the better video though, so I'm not sure what you're getting at.

Lil Wayne will take center stage at the MTV Video Music Awards next month. In a not-so-surprising move, the hip-hop heavyweight is among the performers at this year’s show. While MTV has yet to make an official announcement or reveal nominees, Wayne’s manager Cortez Bryant spilled the beans to Billboard.com during a recent interview, also revealing that Tha Carter IV will be available on iTunes “immediately after” his VMA performance.
The long-awaited album is complete and Bryant confirmed appearances from Nas, Jadakiss, and Tech N9ne. “It’s done for the most part, [around] thirty songs [that] I need to carve down to twelve to sixteen, with four or so bonus tracks,” he explained.
The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in downtown Los Angeles on August 28 at 9 p.m.

Second VOTY in a row for Gaga? I honestly can't think of a better video this year but it might get snubbed cause it underperformed. I think the only other video threatening it would be ET. Judas should definitely win best music video choreography though. The dance is intense! Besides, the MTV Video Music awards is just a popularity contest. It always turns into voting for what song was better/more popular, not what the better music video was.

I'm feeling they're going to spread the love this year the same way they did in 09 with Gaga, Beyonce, and Britney winning. However I think Katy is gonna take home a lot since this really has been her year, followed by either Gaga or Britney.

MTV sucked "I Wanna Go"'s clit so hard that makes me wonder if they could actualy nominate it over HIAM/TTWE for the big categories.
And let'ss get real here, the competition for the big awards is Brit/Gaga/Riri/Katy.
If Britney attends she's sweeping. If she doesnt go, she'll win something like female video or pop video. I don't think MTV will give Gaga any awards this year because of last year, Riri could actually win them, but If MTV doesnt get Britney fever the big winner will be Katy, they can't snub her after the year she's had.

I think Kesha will get snubbed Katy Perry will get some love for Firework and maybe LFN/ET. JLO might get some nominations and possibly best dance video...if they still do that. Slaydele...well nevermind this is the video category...moving right along. Beyonce-do they still have an R&B category...if so she might get it for her new song. Riri should get some for S&M Gaga might get snubbed Nicki might get something for Superbass...can't see Moment for life getting anything Britney...I love Hold it against me and really hope that it is nominated for best direction/art direction...

It's time for Katy to shine this year at the VMA's. It's been LONG LONG overdue.
I don't think Gaga will win anything, tbh, and Britney might win one, but she's probably not attending so whatever. It's Katy's year, for sure.
I hope Chelsea is the host again, last year was the highest rated VMA in what, 10 years? I thought she did great. She's WAY better than Russel Brand and they let him host twice.
The reason the show sucked last year was because it was a male fest with no big performances. Usually, big VMA performances are done by females and the only two females doing something were Robyn and Taylor Swift. I think Katy will go all out, Gaga will probably perform and I think Rihanna might too. The more female performances they have, the better the show is.

When did the eligibility period end?
Blow, The Lazy Song, Run The World, Man Down & I Wanna Go are my fave pop videos this year.

This year will actually be a very competitive year. Britney, Gaga, Katy, Rihanna, and even JLo, Nicki, Ke$ha, and potentially Beyonce will all be vying for these nomination slots.
It will be exciting, but I still see Katy sweeping things this year. Gaga most likely won't be a big winner this year because she raped everyone last year.

Oh Give me a fucking break....since when are Katy Perry, and Kesha considered good performers? The Performances last year were varied and MTV were able to branch out without turning the show into a diva fest. I hope the same thing happens this year.

Kesha's performance at the Billboard Music Awards was better than anything done by a male at the VMA's last year. I don't see how the performances were "varied." There were no exciting females performing and it's the reason the show sucked balls. The 2009 had Gaga, Beyonce, Janet Jackson, Katy Perry and even Taylor Swift doing an uptempo. We don't need a bunch of disposable generic males a la Jason DeRulo being given the opportunity to perform when we can have someone like Beyonce and Gaga do something that will be talked about the next day.

There are artists like Cee Lo Green, who had the best grammy 2011 performance arguably, and Bruno Mars. Alot of the female performers sans gaga and beyonce are all style and no substance, its all smoke and mirrors, flash without the power. Katy Perry cannot perform live, that Kesha performance at the BMAs was trash. I hope mtv actually switches it up somehow, get Mumsford and Sons and Bon Iver, bands that can create more buzz ala Florence and the Machine last year. Get Adele. Enough with this diva back track bulls**t. And what was so special about the Taylor Swift performance. She sings in a backtrack in a subway, then giddily runs outside and jumps on a car and sings some more to a backtrack. That is considered special to you? If I remember currently, Katy Perry opened the 2009 show with an embarrassing tribute to Queen. How can you even mentioned those? 2009 was remembered for three things, the kanye - taylor debacle and the lady gaga performance, and maybe the beyonce performance.
