I believe Gaga has a higher percentage of total album sales this week than Britney did in 2000 when her album was released. That's really the bottom line. If someone would like to prove me wrong I am certainly willing to listen.

I believe Gaga has a higher percentage of total album sales this week than Britney did in 2000 when her album was released. Well her album was available in many more non-traditional stores than Britney's was.

If someone would like to prove me wrong I am certainly willing to listen. Fine See my previous post on this though. I would argue that although CD sales are down from 2000 IN GENERAL. This is not true for high profile albums It takes a special release to draw 1 million people in a week, reagrdless of the era

Interesting though that event albums in 2011 can come 'close' to opening weeks of Britney/Eminem/BSB but obviously aren't headed towards diamond status. Any thoughts?

Well, if you compare high profile album debuts from then and now, there is still a sizeable gap.

.99 cents Amazon deal benefits Lady Gaga because she is a digital artist. This strategy would have not work for everyone. If Amazon has decided to do this for Katy Perry or Rihanna, they would have seen similar results (I am not saying a million in a week) but two or three times of what they debut with. This was a great strategy. I don't really think she would have hit over million without it because Amazon does not draw that crowd to its site. Most definitely, she would have hit over 500K without it due to the hype and aggressive promotion behind this album. This deal could help artists who are very good digital sellers though. I wouldn't be surprised if it is a common thing especially if hype is build around the artist.

Not really The Gaga album is the 10th biggest in the last 20 years. the 5th thru 9th biggest are all between 1.1m and 1.32m - seems like a pretty tight range to me 4 albums exceeded 1.32m (which is about 200K higher than Gaga) Given the right album, I would suggest that breaking into the top 4 is possible, even today

Otherside, SURELY you're not saying that the non-acclaimed teen-pop acts from the early 2000s are more quality than Stefani G? Pure and simple, no new album release in recent memory has scanned 10m+ units (or been certified diamond)- nor will any.

Gaga's AI performance bored me to sleep. I have enjoyed some of her acoustic performances though. Not enough to purchase her album for more than .99 though.

Well let's see Breaking 1.1 million has only happened 9 times (soundscan numbers for Gaga could be below 1.1m) Not exactly commonplace, even in 2000 Let's say, for the sake of argument, this album (or something of similar magnitude) was released during Thanksgiving week, where music buying is at its peak. 1.5 million and breaking into the top 4 is not out of reach

Some of the discussion going on here is among the stupidest in awhile. It's all speculation. All you can do is state your point, agree to disagree and move on.
My question really is whether she could actually do 300k next week. I would have thought 100k maybe. I also think BeyoncΓΖΓΒ© could enter at #1 because it's her. Maybe not super high numbers but enough for the top.

Excuses? As it was mentioned earlier, you don't even have to leave your house to buy an album anymore. yeah lots of people download albums illegally or buy only songs they like, but if you have oportunity to buy whole album for 0.99$ why not to do it. I would say Taylor's 1.04mil is more impresive than gagas 1.1mil

Excuses? As it was mentioned earlier, you don't even have to leave your house to buy an album anymore. That is true. However, the comment quoted was moreso directed towards Britney fanatcs who cannot accept that Gaga could, perhaps, sell 1,000,000+ despite this weaker climate. They were seemingly creating reasons to explain these sales as though they were unbelievable. Perhaps people simply love Gaga and bought the album? Easy as that.
