Veteran Neo-Soul Singer Scores First #1 Album of Career, Bon Iver Scores
June 22, 2011
Neo-soul star Jill Scott’s fourth studio album, The Light of the Sun—the first for her own Blues Babe album through Warner Bros. after her litigious exit from Hidden Beach—will debut at #1 on next week’s HITS sales chart, with between 125-135k.
It’s the first album from Scott since 2007’s The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3 and her first to top the sales chart. Her previous high was the #3 ranking for 2004’s Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2. She has since gone on to star in movies for Tyler Perry and had the lead role in HBO’s African-based The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.
Second-best debut of the week goes to Jagjaguar’s indie folk sensation Bon Iver, aka Justin Vernon, with his self-titled sophomore album, the follow-up to 2008’s critically acclaimed breakthrough, For Emma, Forever Ago, which has sold more than 300k. Look for it to sell between 80-90k its first week, according to those music retailers who haven’t reopened as a combination pancake house and strip club.
Valory/Big Machine country artist Justin Moore’s Outlaws Like Me, his sophomore effort, drops, and should do in the 60-65k region for the Arkansas native. His self-titled debut placed four songs in the Top 40 on the Country Music charts.
Volcano rock parodist supreme “Weird Al” Yankovic’s Alpocalypse, his first since 2006’s Straight Outta Lynwood, which turned into his biggest seller, should bow with 45-50k. The album includes “Perform This Way,” his much-publicized parody of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” for which he was at first refused permission by the superstar’s camp before they relented.
J/RMG Latin hip-hop star Pitbull’s Planet Pit, his sixth studio album, featuring collaborations with Dr. Luke and RedOne and cameos by Enrique Iglesias, Ne-Yo, Marc Anthony and Chris Brown, should debut with 40-45k in sales, thanks to hits like “Give Me Everything.”
Interscope electro hop party boys LMFAO, featuring Motown founder Berry Gordy’s son DJ Redfoo (Stefan Kendal Gordy) and grandson SkyBlu (Skyler Husten Gordy) return with their sophomore effort, Sorry for Party Rocking, which is looking at first-week sales in the 20-25k range.
Vanguard Internet phenom Matt Nathanson’s Modern Love is next up, with a figure of between 18-22k.
The market was up 14% vs. last week, up 3% vs. same week last year and now up 1% year to date. Crack out the bubbly.

slightly better than expected for pitbull. good for him. and DAMN at Jill Scott. I'm just glad Adele is done at #1 for now. Don't feel too bad for her, she'll still be #2.

Pitbull, continuing the tradition of hot singles sales not translating to pent-up demand for the album.
Great for Jill Scott- but will Adele's album threaten?
So I gather that Katy Perry EP didn't pan out? Not that it would be in the hunt for No. 1, mind you.

There'll be quite strong sales in top 10 then... BME won't drop under 50k and Jackie E maybe neither so that'd make at least top 7 to sell over 50k

I always enjoy seeing artists like Jill Scott and Bon Iver debut higher than those who have much bigger radio hits. It shows that people are willing to buy albums when they know they're going to get quality, and radio hits are not enough for people to make that decision.

Good numbers for pitbull. The other time they were predicting 33,000 for rebullion but ended up with 41,000 :) Now there are predicting 40-45 for this album which is an improvement :) Also, pitbull fans tend to buy his music the following days and not the first day he releases something.. So let's hope he can hit 50,000 next week. :) hopefully he promotes it more cause his album is a good album and deserves to hit 50,000.. go pitbull!!

;)Okay. Well, Pitbull's key to succeed is consistency.. yesterday his album was #8 when they predicted the sales.. now it's #4 on itunes. :)..which proves that people is buying the album today.. :) i wanted him to open higher but i'm realististic, Pitbull is still in the process of gaining fans and his fan-base is not too big yet. Even in the latin market, pitbull has struggled to compete with latin urban artists like daddy yankee, wisin y yandel, don omar, these latin rappers sing in Spanish but when they release a great album they can sell over 100,000 cause they have a bigger fan-base than pitbull, but they are also talented aswell. However, for me, 40-45 is good cause to be honest, his last album was predicted to sell 33,000 but it sold 41,000. So, if he keeps selling steady, 50,000 for him is possible!

Jill Scott Aiming For First No. 1 Album, But Could Bon Iver Thwart Her Ambitions?
June 22, 2011 R&B singer Jill Scott looks like she's on the verge of earning her first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart as her just-released "The Light of The Sun" is headed for the top next week.
Industry sources suggest the set could sell as many as 125,000 copies by week's end on Sunday, June 26. The artist, who was formerly with Hidden Beach Records, has notched five previous entries, going as high as No. 3 with 2004's "Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2." Her new "Light" effort is her first on her own imprint, Blues Babe -- through Warner Bros.
The set's lead single, "So In Love" (featuring Anthony Hamilton, will move 11-10 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. (The chart will be refreshed tomorrow on billboard.com.)
Also aiming for high debuts on the Billboard 200 next week are Bon Iver's self-titled (doubly) set "Bon Iver, Bon Iver" (with maybe 80,000) and country singer Justin Moore's "Outlaws Like Me" (perhaps 60,000).
Gunning for top 10 entries are "Weird Al" Yankovic's "Alpocalypse" and Pitbull's "Planet Pit."

Adele may give her a run for her money, too. If Jill gets the #1, I'ma be so proud of her.

With more and more people utilizing digital music and more cars now having an aux slot for you to plug your iPod into, I think radio's influence will be declining over the next few years.

further proof that a CHR hit means nothing when it comes to selling an album.
all those hits and all pitbull is going to clock is a miserable 40K
