Artwork for Mastodon's upcoming album The Hunter (named after the singer's deceased brother) came out like a week ago. Still no word on a single or release date yet. I think a proper push could get a single from this album Top 30 at least.

I guess that would make "Black Tongue" (available now on iTunes) a "teaser" single, then.

Tasty. I'm rooting for bands like these on radio.

Meh. Very watered-down sounding for Mastodon. I'll pass. Bring on "Coloney of Birchmen"!

This sounds radio friendly enough. May do some damage.

VERY SURPRISED, seeing that some active-leaning music sound a lot more alternative than this does. ???

I'm not surprised because hipsters hate metal, but for whatever reason, Mastodon is one of the few exceptions. Pitchfork trashes most metal but they generally give Mastodon rave reviews. This makes sense to me. And this is at least more "alternative" than anything Five Finger Death Punch or Theory Of A Deadman has put out so I don't really know what you mean by your comment Dev.

Also Mastodon are prog-metal, so it sorta makes more sense. It just seems random for it to pop up in the Top 50 on alternative when it hasn't even reached Top 20 on active rock yet.

Yeah I guess. But as has been said, we've never seen them come this far on active rock before. For all we know, "Oblivion" or "Colony Of Birchmen" would have reached the top 50 on alternative too with this level of success on active. But I do think a big part of it is the way they're marketed and that indie/folk sites like Pitchfork media have given them much critical acclaim and provided a community in which alternative music fans have been encouraged to appreciate them.

Another reason for this making Alternative is for one, that it is actually a fairly accessible song from the group. This is the variety of metal that hipsters approve of, yet we don't see the likes of Opeth getting radio airplay, for the record.

Theory of a Dead Man adn Five Finger Death Punch make ham fisted, dopey music. Mastodon bring musicianship and cool arragnements to what they do. Meaning, they are unique. Their arrangements and music have just as much in common with old school Peter Gabriel Genesis as they do with Metallica. As far as "hipsters" are concerned, I have not seen many of them at Mastodon shows. Mostly just dudes who like music.

I'm 9 tracks through the album, and unless any of the final four tracks are beyond mindbogglingly amazing, I vote "Stargasm" for single #2 because it was mindbogglingly amazing. One of the best songs of the year imo. It's very beautiful for a Mastodon song, but also has their usual epicness and strangeness. I applaud them!
