Lead single from new album, out to radio next week from Billboard.biz. Have not heard yet. Still looking for that second hit...

If this gets my local Alt station to stop playing Dog Days at the top of every other hour, i'll be happy.

Heard today. This is quite orgasmic to say the least.

This is very good, but it's not nearly as catchy as "Dog Days Are Over" so I highly doubt it will do as well.

The "not nearly as catchy" part is pretty debatable. But luckily, Alternative isn't always about catchy.

I haven't heard the whole thing yet, but based on what I have heard, I don't like it as much as quite a bit of their (her?) last album.

BBC Music - Florence + the MachineSo Artie is sort of right, in a way. Although you could also see this as the same situation with Avril Lavigne or Selena Gomez. Most of the time the main artist is the only one generally credited, but really have a recording/touring backing band with them all the time. Another way is Artie's way though, which I can see too, as Florence refers to Florence Welsh, while The Machine is her backing band.

I get the sense that her backing band doesn't have the same kind of "permanence" that most bands have. It's easier for Alternative artists (especially females) to have success if they appear under the guise of a band, even if the band really doesn't serve any more of a purpose than any other pop/rock solo female's band.

Now that I have given it time I think this is one of the best songs of the year and of HER career.

I like this quite a bit. I don't know if it sounds like as big of a hit as "Dog Days Are Over" on my first listen, but I think I might like it more. In both "Dog Days" and now this, the prominent use of the harp adds an awesome sonic dimension that should be more present in alternative/rock radio. I always fantasize about adding a hot girl harpist to my band because I think the harp has such a nice timbre, and obviously it would give us a nice marketing edge as well.

Am I missing something?
28 32 FLORENCE + THE MACHINE What The Water Gave ... 263 339 -76 0.587
This looks severe enough to be more than just a bump in the road, especially with songs all around it bulleted. I would have pegged this to have a similar chart run to "Dog Days" but maybe not as slow and maybe nudge its peak down a couple spots outside of the top 10. But THIS is ABSURD! Doesn't she have enough alt cred and doesn't this song have enough likability to perform better than this? I would very much have thought so. I hope that this is just a very pronounced speed bump and that this can continue towards the top 20 at least. But I wouldn't bet on it at this point. >:(

'Shake It Out' will be the winner on this album. Its the official first single as well. 'What The Water Gave Me' is just a promo single.

^ NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!
I don't like this. "What the Water Gave Me" is an epic masterpiece and deserved to have an epic Top 10 peak!!!! I have a feeling "Shake It Out" will be pretty underwelming. >:( >:( >:(

While the awe and shock of this song was something on first listen, it has quickly worn thin for me, and apparently Alt. radio.

Billboard has a 3A adds date for the week of October 23. Nothing on Alternative, but we have to assume it's next here for Alternative. Is 'Shake It Out' the 2nd single in the US?

Haven't heard that one yet, but with this one petering out so soon it might be best for the band to push out a fresh one.
