There's a current (recent? brand new?) song that I heard on my semi-local unmonitored, computer-run Alternative station last night and, unbelievably, tonight as well. I know I've heard it before, because it wasn't completely unfamiliar, but I can't, for the life of me, remember what it is, if I ever knew in the first place.
It's a mid-tempo song that I can only describe as indie pop. It might be an indie rock band, but I sure don't remember the song having any guitar. The main melody is mostly descending (its first note is definitely the highest). It's played instrumentally on a set of bells (i.e., the tiny xylophone kind, not hand bells). I don't know that there is a lead vocalist; the vocals sound like a children's choir who sing a continuation of the bell melody in the chorus. The radio station has a weak signal usually and since none of the "children" were right up close to the microphone, lyrics were very hard to pick out, let alone a whole line of them that I could hear well enough to type into Google. Vocally, the only comparisons that were coming to mind were Foster the People a la "Helena Beat," Broken Bells a la "The Ghost Inside," The Naked and Famous, or MGMT.
The best point of reference I could come up with for the melody, as far as rhythm and tempo are concerned, is the piano line in Phantom Planet's "California." Similar idea, anyway.
Any ideas what this is? I dug the song.

So it isn't any of the above you stated?

This is a massive shot in the dark, but "Magic" by the Sound of Arrows?

So it isn't any of the above you stated? Correct. It is not. This is a massive shot in the dark, but "Magic" by the Sound of Arrows? Thanks for the guess, but unfortunately that wasn't it. This isn't going to help anyone but myself, but if ever I've struggled to remember how the melody went in the past couple days, I can quickly recall it by thinking about the piano melody in Phantom Planet's "California," which I mentioned above. It's not the same melody by any means, but in terms of tempo and rhythm it's similar enough that it jogs my memory of how the unknown song went.

Okay, well I like music like that which you described and another couple of bands who fit the description somewhat but you didn't mention are Passion Pit, Miike Snow and Wolf Gang.
I'm trying to think of specific songs that could fit. "Airplanes" by Local Natives is indie pop and has the descending piano, bells and is mainly sung by a group, but they're not children.
I'll keep thinking about it. lol

Maybe it was LCD Soundsystem? Your description reminded me of the song "Someone Great".

AltNation on Sirius XM plays a lot of indie and these are their Top 18 songs. Perhaps it's one of these? I can eliminate probably half of these from not being it, but the other half I don't really know since I'm not a fan of them so... The XMU station plays mostly indie too, but I can't seem to find a playlist of theirs. Of course Mediabase's playlists apparently can't be checked at the moment since none of the stations that I type in are loading.

American Idiot posted while I was typing up a thoughtful reply to Billy and Ron. I knew 17 of those songs on the AltNation list he provided well enough to know they weren't it (even if I didn't remember how they went offhand). The lone possibility left was a song I've streamed from All Access a couple of times in the past few weeks or so and was thus, only faintly familiar with. Lo and behold, it was the mystery song that had been killing me for the past couple days.
Cults "Go Outside." Thanks, everybody. I appreciate your help.

Damn, I should have known. The thought even crossed my mind but I didn't think it would be for some reason. I'm glad you found it! Their album is decent too.
