Billboard Mainstream Top 40 - 2011 Year-End Chart

It's that time, already. The Billboard 2011 chart year has come to a close. The year began with the issue dated December 4, 2010 and ended this past week with the November 26th issue. I have added up the spins for the year's worth of Mainstream Top 40 charts (a total of 183 songs have charted). Remember, unlike Mediabase (which counts everything), Billboard's year-end tabulation only counts spins for weeks that a song was on the chart and does not include recurrent play. Unless I've made an error, this should be a dead-on accurate match for the official year-end chart. We'll find out when the top 50 becomes available on Billboard's web site in the coming weeks. For now, here it is…

The problem I have with using accumulated spin totals is the fact that radio panel sizes change through the year.

Let's assume from Jan - Mar, the radio panel size was 155 stations, then from Apr-Jun, it was 159, then from Jul-Sep it was 152, then 157 the remainder of the year...if this was true, songs would recieved less spins during certain times of the year while others get more spins...I don't think that is fair or accurate.

I had two pairs of songs transposed. "S&M" and "Till The World Ends" are #15 and #16, respectively. "Pumped Up Kicks" and "Good Life" are # 24 and #25, respectively. I was dead on accurate for the rest of the top 50. The actual top 10 artists are:
