Although not as messed up as it was earlier in the year, there are still a few chart moves on the show that don't make sense. The first one that comes to mind involves my favorite song on the chart, "Letters From War" by Mark Schultz. How come the song is already on its way down? It's a good song and it hasn't been out for that long. Also, "Good To Be Free" should be moving up (yes, that's another one of my favorite songs on the chart this week!)
Jon told a rather interesting story about "More" by Matthew West. That song exits the Top Ten after being there for a half a year. Jon said that the last time that song was below the Top Ten was back in early December, just a few weeks after it debuted in mid-November. And a month before, it was his Jon's Future Favorite pick. At first, I was confused as to why I had never heard that song in the beginning of its chart run, as I was listening to 20: Countdown back at the end of 2003. Then I realized that I usually only listened to the last half-hour of the show, to see if "Word Of God Speak" was still number one. I think the week that Matthew West entered the Top Ten was December 6 (that was the only Saturday in "early December", which was the week that the MercyMe song had fallen out of the top spot). Then I didn't listen as much - the thing that got me listening to the entire broadcast every week was when I decided to listen just for the heck of it and found that the chart was so not kosher (see the 2/29/04 20 Countdown topic for more details)
Anyway, that song sure went a long way! I think it's pretty safe to say that song's going to snag a high position on the Top 20 of 2004.
Another song that'll most likely ride high on Jon's year-ender is the song that's currently at number two. From the way things currently look, that song will probably come out on top. It'll be interesting to see what Jon says when that song leaves the Top Ten! Well, unless it somehow drops out of the chart from inside the Top Ten, which has happened a handful of times this year, the most recent being "Right Here" by Jeremy Camp, which left the survey a few weeks ago.
I have a feeling that "Whatever It Takes" by Nate Sallie is going to leave the countdown next week, since they played the whole song (most weeks, they took out the bridge of the song and combined the last chorus with the chorus before). They did that with "Let My Words Be Few" by Phillips Craig & Dean back in the summer of 2001 the week that song was spending its last week on the countdown. In that song, they cut out the second chorus and the instrumental bridge. But that's OK; the song has had a good run - it entered the Top Ten back on the aforementioned Leap Day weekend. I don't know if it's going to make the year end chart - probably not, since the song only peaked at number five or so and usually, Jon only plays #1 or #2 songs on his year ender, so I doubt we'll be hearing that on the Top 20 of 2004. I still don't see why Jon doesn't just take two weeks out of the holiday period to do 40 songs. This past year, on the weekend of December 20, he did his 20 favorite Christmas songs, then a regular weekly show a week after that, then the Top 20 of the year. Since he has the chart for every week on his website anyway, why doesn't he do the countdown over a two-week period? Who knows?
Anyway, I'm glad to see that Selah is back in the Top Ten. That song somehow was pushed back a little bit a few weeks ago, but now is back where they had been before. Will they climb any higher? We'll have to wait and see.
Let's hope "Letters From War" recovers and moves into the Top Ten real soon!
