The debut looks to be disappointing, but I think they can give the album some legs as far as sales go if the critical praise for this continues, and hopefully translates into some form of industry nominations. The title track, when it finally gets enough steam to get a full-fledged release, sounds like it could be a real surprise hit. It won't rise as quick as Tough did when it started out, but I don't think it will fizzle out early, either.

This gives me the impression that this will be the next single released. Here's an exert from the article: We've actually started working a single to secondary radio -- it's the title cut," Sony Music Nashville chairman/CEO Gary Overton says. "It's an amazing record. We wanted to start a little traction and groundswell at secondary radio instead of pulling the switch and going to the front-line 150 reporting stations . . . It's a nice, steady campaign through secondary radio and the plan would be to go ahead to mainstream country radio." Even in the absence of a hit, Pickler is one of the format's most visible artists. "Kellie is such a celebrity in country music," Overton says. "Ellen DeGeneres loves her and would have her on every week. We have people asking her for all sorts of things all the time, so we said, 'Let's capitalize on that and build the celebrity side, and while we're doing that let's let them know she has new music.' I think we're going to have a really good first week." Overton notes that the label took advantage of TV opportunities in December with Pickler performing on the Country Music Assn.'s Christmas special as well as Michael Bublé's holiday show. "We did a lot through the holiday season and set up preorders for her album on Walmart.com, iTunes and Amazon," he says. "We have a contest on Taste of Country for someone to win an autographed guitar. Through Sony Music Nashville's Facebook app, we're doing a preview of all the songs on the album one day at a time. We're trying to hit every type of media to get to the consumers directly." www.billboard.com/column/the-615/country-music-hall-of-fame-class-of-2012-1005990552.story#/column/the-615/idol-alum-kellie-pickler-toughens-up-with-1005956552.story

^ At least they acknowledge that despite Kellie's lack of multiple Top 10 hits that she is indeed a very visible country artist. It always floors me when people think she's one flop away from BNA handing her the pink slip. If they were even considering such a thing, they wouldn't have let her create such an artistic masterpiece of an album, and instead they'd be pushing the most generic fare they could find.
This wouldn't be the first time an artist took multiple years and album releases to break through, and I still think Kellie will win out in the long run.

Yeah it took Reba 4 years to get a top 10 hit. I'm not saying Kellie is Reba, but if her future albums are as good as this one is, then the sky is the limit! Reba did the same thing, she started out popish Country for the early 80s, then by 84 she went back to traditonal with "My Kind of Country" even tho she was having modest hits. Then when she went traditional, her career exploded! I know Pop Country is the norm now, way more than the mid 80s, but if Kellie could have this kinda "Reba transition" and make her career take off like jet plane, then well me and alot of her long time fans will be some of the happiest people on the planet for Kellie! This title track as a single is a great start! I'm thinking "Rockaway" "Little House" and "Mother's Day" could make this album have multiple #1s and go Platinum or better by the time this era is up. It also shows her vocal albility like we've never seen it and she deserves a CMA nom for "Female Artist" and Album" for this project! Maybe even a 2013 Grammy nom!

I really hope they know what they're doing this time. I'm not one of those people that .indulgecountry (or .indulgecholera atm ) has stated about Kellie being one flop away from being dropped, but I think she is at that point unfortunately. I'm not really blaming her for "Tough", though. I'm praying for an adds date in February or the first week of March at the latest. They really need to get this out there, although I don't mind what they're aiming for.

They should fight for an ACM performance. That, or at the very least, they need to get her to carry them in and out of commercial breaks (like what they did with the new artist nominees at the CMT Music Awards in 2011, Jessie J at the 2011 MTV VMA Awards, etc.) to get her exposure.
Just...something. Presenting an award at every show will do nothing for her, and it's time her label recognizes that. Appearances on Ellen and Fox and Friends don't cut it anymore. This street week for her has been less than impressive. Get her on Idol this season. Get her at an awards show (if the ACMs are out of the question, then the CMT Music Awards). Get her on some late night shows (Jay Leno, Conan, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, David Letterman). Get her on something that pulls in ratings and gives her a big spotlight. Get her to open for a big artist on tour this year. I know Carrie Underwood is going on tour this year -- that'd fit the bill perfectly.
They just need to get Kellie out there, because BNA is not doing a great job. I don't want to see one of the best Country albums of the past few years fly completely under the radar because a label can't promote her to radio and the public eye.

You need to interview for a BNA marketing executive job, cause whoever they got doesn't have the sense you do! :)

I'm still shaking my head at how "Tough" was mishandled as well as the beginning of the era; it might actually continue shaking for the rest of the decade as far as I know. I repeat, they better get it right with this song. I really enjoy Kellie's music, but the way she's being handled is starting to disgust me (seems like she's getting Kenny's scraps and nothing else). She has enough material to at least start a streak of top 10's, though, so I'll try not to worry too much.

I honestly hope some PDs/DJs are just not playing her cause of where she started, Idol. I know some have been rather outspoken about the "recent" people to come off that show. Its been 6 years, if some in the industry still have that against her, they need to get over it. Its like some have the "Carrie only and nobody else" point of view regarding that show's alumni.

Its been 6 years, if some in the industry still have that against her, they need to get over it. Its like some have the "Carrie only and nobody else" point of view regarding that show's alumni. I doubt that's the case. If you think about, she's actually had a pretty impressive track record over the past 6 years, with only a handful of females experiencing more success than her (and several of them have had spotty records themselves in that time frame -- Reba, Sara Evans, Martina McBride). I'd say if Idol would've done any harm to her credibility at radio, it wouldn't be now, 6 years down the road, and 5 Top 20 hits later, 1 of which was a Top 10 and Platinum-selling single. Its a real shame radio let Tough slip through the cracks, but I wouldn't chalk it up to the Idol stigma, and rather just to a combination of mishandling by her label and the fact that she's a woman not named Carrie, Taylor, or Miranda, so the door for the other women at country that constantly opens and closes unfortunately shut on her this time (as it did for Where Country Grows, but not Look It Up... or Sunny's recent two singles, but not FATA, i.e.). Its almost like at times you just have to cross your fingers and pray the planets align, if only momentarily. I have big hope for this song though. It sounds AMAZING on the radio.

"@kelliepickler: What song off "100 PROOF" do YOU think should be the next single for country radio?!?"
That's interesting, eh? I said Rockaway or Tammy Wynette. I LOVE 100 Proof I just don't think it's the best single.

This album isn't going to sell without a single at radio.

100 Proof needs to be the single. It is hands down the most radio friendly song and the album, not to mention the best.

I LOVE 100 Proof I just don't think it's the best single. Hmm. I'm kinda torn. A part of me thinks 100 Proof is strong enough that it could be one of those hits like THTBM and completely surprise everyone. Although I also think that Rockaway or Little House on the Highway may be better for their uptempo appeal heading into the warmer months, as we know that Kellie's songs take a long time to climb up the charts.

^ I would have thought that too but she just sang Tammy Wynette in a few places. So it makes me wonder what the actual plan is.

Whatever they're doing I hope they announce something soon. I tweeted my support of this song or "Rockaway" as I think that's my favorite on the album.

The copy of the album I bought had one of those stickers on it that said "Including the hit songs Tough and Mother's Day". Both are great songs, but i'd prefer 100 Proof.

The song is currently Top 30 at Music Row after only 4 weeks. over 1200 plays last week. www.musicrow.com/charts/chart/It's all part of the label's original plan for this single. It is working so I'd suspect they'd take it to major radio stations soon as well. The "Next Single" stuff is likely for single #3.

Wait? They haven't chosen a second single yet? I thought this was it. Didn't this go out to the secondary/smaller markets first to test the waters before giving it an adds date for the bigger stations? Regardless, this should get an adds date in the next couple of weeks. I'm sure this'll be at least a top 20 hit when all is said and done; I'm not really expecting this to be a #1, honestly.

I noticed this as well, and thought it was weird that they'd advertise that song on the cover but not the actual second single. Granted this is out there charting on the smaller stations or whatever, so I hope they stick with it. I love Mother's Day, too, but I prefer this song much more and think it carries much more radio appeal as well.

I'd rather Tammy Wynette, 100 Proof, Stop Cheatin', Rockaway... a million percent over Mother's Day. I don't think it should be a single at all.

^I agree. I won't mind "Mother's Day" becoming a single (although it'll have to grow on me some more), but not yet. Let this, "Rockaway," and/or "Little House on the Highway" become hits first.
