Well, after a six-week stay at the top of the chart, Casting Crowns relinquishes the top spot to MercyMe with their latest, "Here With Me". That song will probably stay up there for a month or so and then, I predict that the next number one will be "I Believe" by Third Day. In fact, that's about the only likely future number one song in the Top Ten. As for the rest of the chart, I guess Anthony Evans and Fusebox have a chance to capture the top spot in ensuing months, but other than that, I don't know.
Wow, the week after a song that had re-entered the countdown after dropping out, another song does the same. As you may remember, "Beautiful" by Bethany Dillon had been on the chart for a little over two months, dropped out, and returned last week. That song drops out once again and "Grace Like Rain" returns to the survey. Cool, now when the website is updated with the new chart, I can see what number it was last week. It was probably right outside the Top 20.
So "Go Light Your World" didn't return this week. I thought it would, since it hasn't been out for long. Who knows, maybe, after hearing Kathy Troccoli's version for about ten years, people feel that Chris Rice doesn't do the song justice, but I thought he did a great job (then again, I've only heard Kathy Troccoli's version a few times). But you never know; the song just might come back. I'm surprised "The End" by Matthew West hasn't returned yet, either. Pulse FM still plays that song a lot.
And, while Phillips, Craig & Dean fall out of the chart from right outside the Top Ten, two other songs that have been on for longer (I'm pretty sure, anyway) keep hanging around. First off, we have the song that will probably battle it out with Building 429 for the title of #1 song of 2004, "More" by Matthew West. Jon said that the song has possibly broken the record for the longest running song in the Top 20. I wouldn't doubt it either. It's been on the chart since, what, November? If it does break the record, then MercyMe (Word Of God Speak) can't be that far behind. And neither can the other song that's still around, Nate Sallie with "Whatever It Takes". Now, I have no idea when that song debuted, but I'm estimating that it came onto the chart in January. So it's been around for about a half a year now. Hmm, I said a few weeks ago that it probably wouldn't make the Top 20 of the year since it didn't hit the top three. With all the weeks it has under its belt, it could make it.
"Letters From War" keeps moving on up. It matches its peak that it hit about a month back, moving up to number twelve. Maybe it will make the Top Ten. But if it doesn't, that's OK, since it's been out for quite awhile and, besides, I'm actually getting a little tired of it.
I think I know why there were two special shows back to back. Jon and his wife Sherry were in China, to pick up the little girl that they adopted. Jon has mentioned that on the show a few times in the past few months. I didn't stop to think that was the reason that they decided to do an encore edition of the show was that Jon and Sherry had to fly to China to go through all the adoption procedures and stuff.
Well, that's about all for this week. We'll see if Matthew West and/or Nate Sallie can keep hanging on next week. You never know when a song is going to suddenly drop off the chart (as illustrated by the Phillips, Craig & Dean song this week). That's what makes 20: The Countdown Magazine so interesting.
