Whether it's an artist who you are expecting to make a big comeback, or an artist who had an awesome year, but you expect them to continue to slay in the new year, choose your top 5 that you have the highest expectations for coming in 2012.

Ke$ha Rihanna Adele Madonna Kelly Clarkson (Avril Lavigne)
I'd also really like to see Shakira and Natasha Bedingfield come back strong with smash hits for new album eras next year, but there's nothing to go on for either of them at this point, really.

Ke$ha, Adele, Nicki, Rihanna, Katy ~ in that order
Faith, Taylor, Carrie, Shania will be big at Country but won't do anything on Pop. Ashanti will remain irrelevant. Gaga and Bey will continue releasing singles off their respective albums but will continue to underpeform. Madonna & Mariah will score one major Pop hit and will underperform with their following singles (a la J Lo this year) Christina could go either way really- depends on what she releases. Kelly won't do as well as people might be hoping. Britney will close the era soon and will probably release a lead single and album in Q4 like she used to do. +a new diva no one expects will breakthrough next year
That's what I think

Clearly I'm alone but I kind of feel like Kesha might struggle in her 2nd era. I'm not sure her sound will be able to remain fresh....her hits already sound kind of dated.
I voted for Adele, Kelly, and Rihanna.

Lady Gaga will have a huge and very successful tour. If she releases Hair that will very likely meet with Top 10 (Hot 100, Pop) success, but otherwise nothing much more will come out of Born This Way. She will move another 1 million sales, worldwide, for her album during that time, bringing the total to 6 million. Ke$ha will have a huge comeback with a smash lead single off of her sophomore album. Rihanna will continue to release huge singles. Adele will smash more with Set Fire To The Rain and sales for 21 will spike again. Nicki Minaj will have a very successful new era.

Rihanna Adele Kelly Clarkson Carrie Underwood (I have some doubts about her album being a striking difference from her others, which will ensure it's another success for her) Last slot is teetering between Madonna and Christina...I'll give the edge to Madonna.
Maybe I'm being short sighted, but I don't think Ke$ha's second era is going to be anywhere near as successful as her first.

Isn't Adele not supposed to sing for a while because of her vocal chords? And why would she release another album so early? If she's big at all, it'll be in Q4 of 2012.

"Set Fire to the Rain" is going to take every name in the book, and she'll have the Grammys. That alone will keep propelling her well into Q2, and hopefully she'll release another single or two which will continue to sell the album.

In no particular order...
Will take over our minds: 1. someone we didn't see coming (could be a new person or a familiar face that's been off the radar for a long time) 2. Ke$ha - I don't know why but I just get this feeling her first single is going to be a dangerously blood-pressure-rising and heartbeat-increasing club stomper, but maybe this is just my wish to make up for the fact that Sleazy and Cannibal never got properly released. Regardless, I do think her first single will be just different enough that it's not same-old-electro-pop K$ while still being perfectly suited to pop radio. 3. Madonna - even though I only see her having one hit single, it will definitely make an impact, and then she'll slay us for the remainder of the year with her tour stats. 4. Adele - SFTTR and the Grammys will see her through to the spring. I think that will be the final single from the album, but the Bond Theme will come later in the year and I think people will jump all over it. So she'll bookend the year. 5. Christina - she is either going to do really well or flop tremendously; there will be no in between. Thing is, when she does flop people can't resist the opportunity to talk about it incessantly and kick her while she's down. So either way, I expect her comeback attempt to be much talked about for 2012.
Honorable mentions: 1. Carrie - she'll do well within country as she always does, but her material will probably not stray much from what she's done before, and as usual I doubt she'll be attempting to cross over. So I don't necessarily expect to be bowled over by her success. (Such is the double-edged sword that is consistency.) 2. Kelly - I think WDKY will do well, and her third single will probably also perform decently. But again, I don't expect to be bowled over by a sudden surge in album sales; likely, Stronger's numbers will be similar to that of AIEW. She'll basically be fulfilling her transition from CHR to HAC artist and I think that will reflect in her performance on those charts. 3. Rihanna - like Carrie, it is the double-edged sword of consistency. She's so omnipresent on the Hot 100 it's almost hard to regard her as particularly dominant (whereas when someone like Adele or Katy has a 'breakthrough' moment the effect is felt more). I also think she might go a bit light on the promo, not disappearing completely but being careful not to exhaust herself so much like she just did at the end of this year. She's got a small part in Battleship so there will be that for her to promote and if her acting is even moderately decent I think that will be 'big' thing for her in 2012, as it will give her the incentive to pursue acting more. 4. Mariah - I find it hard to imagine she won't put out a first single that tries to cater to CHR and gets her a top 10 hit, but she's not launching a 'comeback' era so I don't have any real expectations for domination. But who knows, she could be the one to surprise me.

Adele reign will continue: 'Fire', the Brits, Grammys, then 'Rumour', the Bond Theme.
Carrie Underwood- new single, new record after the longest break of her career. Going to be HUGE this year, I reckon. Kelly Clarkson- I'm invested in the hype of 'Kill', which should create huge momentum for the next smash single, 'Dark Side' Rihanna- will continue to do well as usual.
I feel that Kesha's expiration has either passed or will pass soon, so she's is not even a consideration, IMO, but, admittedly, I have completely underestimated her success to date as I truly do not understand it.

In no particular order... (2012 will be the year of the Idol Queens -- Kelly, Carrie , and potentially Adam Lambert) - Kelly Clarkson ~ The Stronger era will take off, WDKY(S) should smash and carry her through to the Spring, and with the tour, she should be able to pound out 4 or 5 more solid radio hits from the album. I'm thinkin' the 2013 Grammys could spell a good year for her if all goes well. - Carrie Underwood ~ She'll [finally] have her fourth album out after nearly a two and a half year break (which is longer than usual for her, causing her fans that much more distress), she'll have her continued #1 hits, a smash tour, and oh so much more. The girl shall rule the world. TBH, if she's got an album that's cohesive enough and constructed well enough (this was discussed in the Carrie 4th Album thread a few weeks ago), she could be the Country representation in the main categories at the Grammys. *knock on wood* - Adele ~ The Grammys in February will be a great platform for her to seal off the Set Fire to the Rain era (after it goes #1, which I'm sure it will) while she's racking up every award imaginable, and she'll be able to (hopefully) go out on tour for a little while longer. She could release some more gems from that perfect album of hers, and that collectively should help her continue to sell even more copies of 21. - Rihanna ~ New album, more #1s, big tour, etc. Not much to explain here. - Lady Gaga ~ Seeing as she's stated that the Born This Way era is only halfway done in terms of singles, and she's going out on a 400-date tour for the album, I highly, highly doubt she won't be reigning in some positive form next year. I can only imagine how much of a spectacle that tour will be, and I'm excited to get my hands on those tickets! Carrie (isn't she putting out a new album soon?) YESYESYESYES Legendarrie shall be resurrected from her long hiatus.

Kelly Clarkson--- The era will be very much an if/then situation. If "What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)" smashes as hard as some of us are predicting, Kelly could get to All I Ever Wanted sales with ease. If not, they might as well not put much stock in the continuation of the era, since if anything was going to smash it would have been "What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)". My prediction is that she'll get to four singles (preferably: MKIA, WDKY(S), DS, TWIO) and then the label will either choose to release a fifth (LMD or YLM) to keep people interested throughout the holiday season of 2012, or just drop it and hope for good recognition that upcoming award season. I think sales could potentially reach platinum after the success of "Dark Side", and then it's really a question of how much life the album has left in it. She's still a staple on radio, and although she's lost relevance, there will still be hype around her releases since she's still a big name. I see good things from this era--- things I really couldn't expect from All I Ever Wanted, commercial as it was. She and RCA seem invested in it and are on the same page, and from what we saw with the success of a boring first single like "Mr. Know It All", when they're working together they can still make a splash.
Adele--- I see big things from Adele this year again. She said she's not going to release an album for another three years, which makes sense, seeing as her success is probably sudden and hard to deal with. I can see "Set Fire to the Rain" smashing at number one, or hanging out in the top ten, kind of like "You and I". Adele will sweep at the Grammy's, 'nuf said. If SFTTR does as well as we think, she could follow it up with "Rumor Has It", "Turning Tables", or "I'll Be Waiting". Her album will sell throughout 2012 as a viable contender for the year, even if she doesn't have multiple single releases lined up like Rihanna

Kelly Clarkson Rihanna Ke$ha Adele
Other: Leona Lewis. (I think if everything works out right, she could have a pretty decent era).
Also - P!nk, Nicki Minaj, Christina, Madonna & Carrie Underwood are likely to have successful eras too.

i think Madonna is going to blow Hard Candy's era out of the water. Compared to others in the US? Probably not. On a worldwide scale? She'll easily be one of the top 5 of the year, if not top 3. It will be a lot of fun watching the WW charts.

I kind of hope Rihanna stays out of the pop scene for a while. Not just because I'm a selfish Adele and Kelly fan and want them to dominate endlessly, but also because I think her music has suffered from the constant exposure and pressure to continuously release music--- multiple singles in weeks, endless promotion, the works. When she released songs like "Umbrella", "Take a Bow" and "Unfaithful", she was at least interesting and proved that she had talent.
"We Found Love", "S&M", and "Only Girl in the World" are so generic and contrived that she sounds like everyone else out there, even though she's clearly not. The whole "I'm going to dress eclectically and sing about sex" act is driving me crazy. Rihanna has talent. Save the lip-synching and bizarre performances singed with sexuality for someone who doesn't.
So maybe if she takes a while and records some more mature, respectable music, she'll make a name for herself as a respectable artist, not just a pop star. There's a big difference and Rihanna kind of missed it, I think. And it takes time--- meaning, don't release two albums a year and five singles from each album. Take a break and reflect.
Her albums, on the other hand, are more enjoyable. I liked "Talk that Talk" more than I expected, if only for its slight diversity.

Carrie Underwood ~ I don't follow country, so I don't know.
Madonna ~ I expect her to smash worldwide. In the U.S., she's definitely not going to have any huge hits though, and probably just one or two moderate hits (lower top ten, maybe). It really depends on where she goes with the material though. I haven't heard any demos or anything.
Christina Aguilera ~ She'll either have a huge era, an era like LOVE? with just one big hit, or flop miserably. Whatever happens, she'll make a big impact on Pulse at least.
Lady GaGa ~ She should have a decent year, but obviously it won't be on 2009 levels. "Marry The Night" will probably push further after the freeze and make a decent peak, and she could follow that up with "Hair" which could also chart well, but she's not going to have any big hits (unless she releases a new album/EP/standalone single/collaboration). Her tour will be huge, though.
Mariah Carey ~ I don't know. If she releases a new album, she could probably have a hit to the degree of "Obsessed" or possibly "Touch My Body", but it's very unlikely that she'll have a huge year. I really don't know what she's planning, though.
Kelly Clarkson ~ She should have a nice hit in "What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)", and she'll probably be able to follow that up with another top ten hit, but no, she's not going to have an exceptionally big year.
Adele ~ Yes. She'll slay the Grammy's, "Set Fire To The Rain" will be huge and 21 will continue to sell amazingly. "Set Fire To The Rain" should keep her top ten until April or so if not later, and if a fourth and possibly a fifth single are released, that will ensure her presence on radio for most or all of the year.
Rihanna ~ Some more #1's, a new album, a big collaboration - all the usual.
Ke$ha ~ She could either have another huge era, or just one or two hits. It depends on if she tries something new, and if her new style is popular, mainly. She should have at least one big hit regardless, though.
Katy Perry ~ I'm not expecting a new album from her next year, so it'll probably mostly be a "quiet" year for her. "The One That Got Away" will start off the year for her, and if Capitol chooses to release a seventh single that could keep her with some (not very big) presence on radio for a few more months, but she's not going to have anything huge like she's had in previous years. She could have a big collaboration, though.
Britney Spears ~ No, I don't think she'll release anything new next year.
Taylor Swift ~ I don't know about country success, but I don't think she'll end up doing much on pop. Maybe a few minor crossover hits, similar to Speak Now.
Beyoncé ~ No. Unless they re-release the album with something pop on it, definitely not.
Ashanti ~ No.
Nicki Minaj ~ She definitely has the capability of producing another hit to the degree of "Super Bass", or bigger. I don't know what her plans are like, but it probably seems most logical that she'll release a new album around summertime, that gives her the potential for a huge summer hit.
Faith Hill, Shania Twain ~ I don't follow country, I have no idea. I don't know any material from either of these artists, anyway.
