Well, we usually do these every year and I don't see one yet, so have at it!
In spite of how critical I've been of 89x over the past few years, and how little I've listened to them (or any FM radio, pretty much) last year, I tuned into their countdown on New Year's Day and enjoyed it quite a bit. They do strongly lean active, cold shoulder a lot of legitimate hit records, and have their Can-Con quota, but they do it their own way, and that's cool with me. Doesn't mean I'll be increasing their listening time much, though.
88.7 (CIMX) of Windsor/Detroit - 2011
89. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Jr. - "Almost Lost Detroit"
88. Cage the Elephant - "Around My Head"
87. D.R.U.G.S. - "The Only Thing You Talk About"
86. Grouplove - "Colours" (Added recently and it seems like they're sticking it out with this one.)
85. We Came As Romans - "What I Wished I Never Had"
84. The Parlor Mob - "Into the Sun"
83. Black Veil Brides - "Fallen Angels"
82. Atomic Tom - "Take Me Out" (Surprised they were even in on this.)
81. Social Distortion - "Machine Gun Blues" (Never noticed them being in on this, which was actually infuriating considering how much they supported "Reach For the Sky" and "Far Behind" which didn't end up as big as this.)
80. Hollywood Undead - "Levitate"
79. Jasta (featuring Zakk Wylde) - "The Fearless Must Endure" (But why? They never played any Hatebreed, and this couldn't have been that big on Active anyway.)
78. Finger Eleven - "Living In A Dream"
77. Panic! At The Disco - "The Ballad of Mona Lisa"
76. Blue October - "The Chills"
75. Evans Blue - "This Time It's Different"
74. 311 - "Sunset In July"
73. Escape the Fate - "Gorgeous Nightmare"
72. My Darkest Days - "Save Me"
71. Middle Class Rut - "Busy Bein' Born" (First time hearing on the radio.)
70. Every Avenue - "No One But You"
69. Nickelback - "Bottoms Up"
68. Incubus - "Adolescents"
67. Skrillex - "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" (When this and the Korn songs are the only songs of its type on this station, it sounds odd, and gotta be impossible to make those transitions. And then they gotta go into somebody dying...)
66. Airborne Toxic Event - "Changing" (Lol...you never played this.)
65. Staind - "Eyes Wide Open"
64. Death Cab for Cutie - "You Are a Tourist" (Lol...you never played this!)
63. Sum 41 - "Blood In My Eyes"
62. Coldplay - "Paradise" ("Every Teardrop" completely absent and probably never added. Couldn't ignore a #1, I guess.)
61. Shinedown - "Diamond Eyes (Boom-lay Boom)"
60. Anberlin - "Closer" (Peculiar how big Anberlin is on this station and WJBX of Fort Myers which also is very strongly Active. But this was its first radio spin from me as well.)
59. Rise Against - "Satellite"
58. Breaking Benjamin - "Enjoy the Silence" (WTF is this all about???)
57. Linkin Park - "Iridescent"
56. Asking Alexandria - "Someone, Somewhere"
55. The Naked and Famous - "Punching in a Dream" ("Young Blood" is completely absent and never played. I was shocked when this came on. Right after Asking Alexandria, too.)
54. Seether - "Country Song"
53. The Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Look Around" (But no "Monarchy of Roses", although they're spinning that now.)
52. Disturbed - "Hell" (Did they really need a new Disturbed hit so badly that they'd play pick-a-single off their B-sides cash-in?)
51. Jane's Addiction - "Irresistible Force"
50. Taking Back Sunday - "You Got Me"
49. Young The Giant - "My Body"
48. A Day To Remember - "It's Complicated"
47. Five Finger Death Punch - "Under And Over It"
46. My Chemical Romance - "Bulletproof Heart"
45. Foster the People - "Helena Beat"
44. blink-182 - "Heart's All Gone" (This sounded great on the radio.)
43. The Beastie Boys - "Make Some Noise"
42. Switchfoot - "Dark Horses"
41. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - "If I Had A Gun"
40. Theory of a Deadman - "Lowlife"
39. AWOLNATION - "Not Your Fault" (1½ months of airplay gets it this high?)
38. Bleeker Ridge - "You Would've Liked It"
37. Staind - "Not Again"
36. Rise Against - "Help Is On the Way"
35. My Darkest Days - "Every Lie"
34. Korn (featuring Skrillex and Kill the Pain) - "Narcissistic Cannibal"
33. Art Of Dying - "Get Through This"
32. Sick Puppies - "Riptide"
31. The Foo Fighters - "Walk" (But they're still holding out on "These Days".)
30. Redlight King - "Old Man"
29. Sixx: AM - "Lies of the Beautiful People"
28. Cage the Elephant - "Shake Me Down"
27. Hollywood Undead - "Hear Me Now"
26. Evanescence - "What You Want"
25. Bush - "The Sound of Winter"
24. Ghosts of August - "Disease"
23. RED - "Feed the Machine"
22. The Black Keys - "Lonely Boy" (Already?)
21. Silverstein - "Burning Hearts" (First Silverstein track I've noticed them play even though they qualify as "countrymen", which I didn't even realize because it seems to me they would have been all over Silverstein long before post-hardcore's mainstream death.)
20. Chevelle - "Face to the Floor"
19. Ko - "Capable"
18. Thirty Seconds to Mars - "Night of the Hunter" (I finally forgive them now for stonewalling "The Kill" during its entire 70+ week national chart run.)
17. Sum 41 - "Screaming Bloody Murder"
16. Incubus - "Promises, Promises" (This much higher than "Adolescents" at #68, on this type of station?)
15. Theory of a Deadman - "Bitch Came Back"
14. The Red Hot Chili Peppers - "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie"
13. D.R.U.G.S. - "Sex Life"
12. Seether - "Tonight"
11. Redlight King - "Bullet In My Hand"
10. Taking Back Sunday - "Faith (When I Let You Down)" (TBS plays 89x's festival shows every single year it seems, so they still treat TBS as highly relevant.)
9. AWOLNATION - "Sail" (Could have been much higher too, if they hadn't waited until September to add this.)
8. Rise Against - "Make It Stop (September's Children)"
7. Foster the People - "Pumped Up Kicks"
6. A Day To Remember - "All Signs Point To Lauderdale" ("I hate this town, it's so messed up, and all my friends don't give a fuff"??? Is this how every station treats that line?)
5. Hollywood Undead - "Been To Hell"
4. Avenged Sevenfold - "So Far Away" (But they, who have had an A7X song at #1 for three of the last four years and even spinned "Unholy Confessions" before anyone knew about them, don't seem to be aware that "Buried Alive" is a hit single.)
3. The Foo Fighters - "Rope"
2. Korn (featuring Skrillex) - "Get Up!"
1. blink-182 - "Up All Night"
Other omissions from the MediaBase top 50 that weren't included last year either:
Mumford and Sons - "The Cave", "Roll Away Your Stone" (I don't think 89x has ever played a Mumford and Sons track, except during last year's countdown when they inexplicably stuck "Little Lion Man" at #60.)
The Black Keys - "Howlin' For You" (Probably overlooked, but inexcusable.)
Florence + The Machine - "Dog Days are Over" (They'll probably never play any Floxie track under any circumstance.)
Sublime with Rome - "Panic" (They did interrupt the countdown to play "Doin' Time" during dead air downtime, though. .)
The Joy Formidable - "Whirring" (They'll never play anything from them, either.)
Cake - "Sick Of You", "Long Time" (No Cake since "Short Skirt/Long Jacket")
Young The Giant - "Cough Syrup" (Might have just forgotten about it.)
The Strokes - "Under Cover of Darkness" (Don't know if they ever played it.)
Adele - "Rolling in the Deep" (Obviously.)
Neon Trees - "1983" (Not surprising.)
