8 songs above 10000? >_> oh my how times have changed.
I'm hoping "Roar" pulls a 6th week at #1 but it looks like "Royals" could take over by Sunday then it can stay until December at #1.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but before this year I don't think a song had ever cracked 16,000 spins. And now we have three at the same time. Too bad for Avicii

Wow another bipolar update for the Wanted I still don't understand why Love me again dissapear from itunes. The song was climbing and sooner or later would reach top 100 there, and that would help to make the song a radio success, but now is nowhere to be seen, and its pop updates are very far from being thrilling
At least Let her go and Counting stars are doing well, and i think it will do even better now that both are in the itunes top 10

I'm hoping "Roar" pulls a 6th week at #1 but it looks like "Royals" could take over by Sunday then it can stay until December at #1. No way it'll last that long up there, not with Miley wrecking her way up. Some other observations: Looks like "Wake Me Up" will go the way of "Don't You Worry Child", except for not even making it one day at the top. "Applause" can take #5 by Sunday night if she can pick it up again and/or "Holy Grail" starts losing more. Come on...! Paramore have a chance to hold Selena Gomez back and officially peak at #9. Fingers crossed there too... :) With Capital Cities going recurrent Sunday, Taylor & Ed could hit #13 if Britney doesn't pass them. Nice to see "TKO" cooling down a bit. Looks like "Sail" is finally starting to sink. End of the line for Pink. Emeli Sande's slowing down :( though she just jumped 50+ spots on iTunes from yesterday (but still has a long way to go on that front...). Nice to see "Burn" coming up. And there's The Wanted, gaining again! Yo-yo much?

Until the first week of December, wouldn't it be like 6 or 7 weeks? But you're right I forgot all about "Wrecking Ball". We have 10 weeks left in the year I think, so I guess "Royals" and "Wrecking Ball" will occupy the top until the end of 2013, what else is a threat for #1? Maybe Katy's 2nd Prism single?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but before this year I don't think a song had ever cracked 16,000 spins. And now we have three at the same time. Too bad for Avicii Correct. "I Knew You Were Trouble." was the first song to ever break the 16,000 spin barrier, also breaking the SPS record with 96.470. In today's panel, that would put it at roughly 16,593 spins. She actually peaked with 16,014. Later, "Can't Hold Us" also crossed the 16,000 spin barrier and bested "Trouble" with 16,426 spins, though the panel was larger at that time than it was with "Trouble," so in actuality, "Can't Hold Us" peaked lower in SPS with 95.500 SPS. (The panel size at that time matches today's panel size.) Then both "Blurred Lines" and "Roar" come alone back-to-back shattering both the spin and SPS records. "Roar" even crossed the 17,000 spin barrier for the first time! At their current rates, it looks like the entire top three this week will be over 16,000 spins come Saturday! It looks like "Royals" will move up to #5 in "Top 20 Highest Peaking Songs in 2013" list and "Wake Me Up!" will shift up to #7. This is definitely the strongest top three in quite a while, if ever, with all three songs shattering SPS records for their positions last week. What concerns me is how suddenly fast the SPS record is being broken this year. If memory serves me correctly, in the past few years, these were the SPS record breakers: California Gurls (was also first song to crack 13,000 spins) Grenade E.T. (was also first song to crack 14,000 spins) then "E.T." held it until "I Knew You Were Trouble.," and it's since been broken twice since then. Three times broken in one year when originally it was held for almost two? Crazy! Also, lol @ Katy Perry being the first to crack 13k, 14k, and 17k spins. 15k was first broken by Maroon 5 thanks to a panel change and 16k broken by Taylor. Note that the panel size is much larger now than it was when CG broke 13k. IIRC, CG peaked around 93-ish in SPS, putting it at just under 16,000 spins in today's panel size. Does anyone even remember the last song to hit #1 and not reach 10k spins? I want to say "LoveGame," but I'm not 100% sure. It'd be interesting to know its SPS at that time and compare that to today's panel.

(EDIT: Double-checked the weeks after - yes, KoL are the last ones to do so.) In any case, you know who else did do that after "Lovegame"? Katy. (Vegas.)

Ah, that's right. I knew "Vegas" did as well, but I couldn't remember if that came before or after "LoveGame." I thought someone else did later on in 2009, but I wasn't sure.

The SPS is out of control now, most of the #1 songs on the Decade to Date chart mostly have less than 92 SPS prior to 2013. That's pretty crazy.

Oh well, "Roar" for a 6th week at #1, Lorde can get it next week anyway.

Oh well, "Roar" for a 6th week at #1, Lorde can get it next week anyway. It's going to be super close. If they both received the exact same updates tomorrow as they did today, "Royals" would take #1 by just a few spins. But if they resemble more so of yesterday's updates, "Roar" will be number one again. And I wouldn't be so sure about "Royals" getting it next week if it didn't get it this week. Recently, "Wake Me Up!" has been gaining on "Royals" again. All it would take is for "Royals" to decide to peak before "Wake Me Up!" does or for "Royals" to have a slip-up, and bam, Avicii gets it over Lorde.

Royals and Wake me up have a big advantage, but right now after Wrecking ball there's absolutely nothing that looks like a possible number one. In fact only Demons is climbing at good rythm in the whole top 20 (i wouldn't be surprised if TKO and Work B***ch will get problems to get into the top 10 or even fail to get there).
Of course that could change in the minute Katy, Gaga or another big name release a new single, but if things won't change with Lorde and Avicii small updates and Miley big ones, Wecking ball could be at the top for a good bunch of weeks

"Wrecking Ball" should take number one on either the third or tenth of November, and it doesn't look like anything could challenge it until right before the Holiday Freeze. At that point we should have "Unconditionally," "Venus," "Demons," "Timber," and "Stay the Night" in or near the top ten. There's a couple of other tracks to keep an eye on too, like "Counting Stars," "Let Her Go," "What Now," "Replay," "Sweater Weather," "Burn," "Marry Me," and "My Kind of Love."
It'll be interesting to see if Miley can hold it through the Holiday Freeze or if something else will take it right before or during.

I would die of laughter if Avicii jumped ahead of Lorde and blocked her.

Now that you're talking about #1s, 2013 has been a slow year for #1s, isn't it? or maybe it's because massive "Blurred Lines" hogged those 10 weeks 1998: 10 1999: 11 2000: 13 2001: 12 2002: 12 2003: 15 2004: 11 2005: 12 2006: 14 2007: 13 2008: 13 2009: 192010: 172011: 162012: 182013: 11* It looks like we're back to having an average number of #1s per year? there were too many #1s in the 2009-2012 gap, the years with most #1s since 1994, beginning of PPW era. 2009 was crazy, a grand total of 21 songs hit the top (if we include "Live Your Life" and "Womanizer" which first peaked at #1 in 2008). :o I read an article on Billboard Pop Songs 20th anniversary issue regarding the pure pop explosion that happened in 2008/2009 drive top 40 radio to be more competitive but I think there must be something else.

What's the Holiday Freeze? The period between late December and early January where updates slow to a halt and many songs even see decreases as radio transitions from playing current music to holiday music then to year-end playlists. Mid-January is fun, though, with the January Meltdown: HUGE updates from the currents as playlists transition back to normal.

It's going to be super close. If they both received the exact same updates tomorrow as they did today, "Royals" would take #1 by just a few spins. Assuming Lorde fails to do so tomorrow, we could see it where that happens on Mediabase, but on Billboard she takes it. (Among other recent things, "Summertime Sadness" stopped at #3 there - Avicii leapfrogged her for #2. Then last week, Lorde pushed him down to take #2.)

You know, the one that consists of numerous posters going into panic mode because the year-end countdowns are causing brand new songs to lose spins, leading to the false illusion that those songs are already peaking.

The Holiday Freeze is mostly a myth on Pop. You see a big slow down the week after Christmas when stations do tons of year-end countdowns. However, the idea that they make room for Christmas songs hardly holds water. Sure, they give some spins to those songs but last year I don't think a single Christmas song make top 40 or even top 50 on Mediabase. So they clearly are not taking many spins away from current songs to play Christmas songs.
