I wonder if her stance on gay rights has something to do with this. It's plain as day she's being snubbed left and right. What was the last award the cma or acms gave her? She was being snubbed by the CMA long before she ever spoke out about it. Also, most of the artists in there have spoken up in some way about marriage equality, so I doubt that's it. I really don't think it's anything specific, it seems more in line to believe it's simply the politics of it. While Follow Your Arrow does not come out and stand for marriage equality, why did the C.M.A. award Kacey Musgraves the New Artist award? I do believe that Carrie Underwood will win more awards in the future. What it will take, I have no idea.

I feel like something major needs to happen to shift the balance of power in Nashville, both for awards and for the material getting airplay on the radio. Country music is sure popular right now, but IMO the quality of it, at least mainstream, is on a steep decline. I don't know when this power shift will happen or how, but I hope it happens soon.

I'd love for Brian Mansfield to write a piece on all this stuff, it'd be nice to get a true insider's perspective.

The CMAs hit a 7 year high in viewership last night, so why would the industry change? Luke bryan and others are selling a lot of downloads and even albums, so why would radio stop playing them? At the end of the day, radio programmers, label heads, etc want to make money. Therefore, the only way to get change is when whatever is going on stops making money.

Country music is sure popular right now, but IMO the quality of it, at least mainstream, is on a steep decline. I don't know when this power shift will happen or how, but I hope it happens soon. I 100% agree regarding all of this. That said, I don't think changes will be made anytime soon. Blake, Luke, FGL, and Jason are all incredibly hot right now. As long as their singles, albums, and products are selling, no one is going to encourage them to change. Quality means little as long as there is money involved, and if the artists are on board with singing those songs and selling a certain image, the powers at be will not encourage them to stop. Several artists have spoken out about the state of country music right now, yet it's continuing to sell, and those artists who are finding success with it will continue to record music of that quality. If everybody thought this music was terrible, it wouldn't be selling. Instead, people are buying it, and you even have artists (ignorantly) defending it because it makes money. Jason Aldean came out and defended Luke Bryan, as did Justin Moore, and their argument (s), basically boiled down to the fans like it, so screw you There are a lot of people who don't like the state of the genre right now, but if the music wasn't selling and the artists refused to stoop to that level of mediocrity, the debate rages on. I firmly believe a lot of the issues surrounding quality of country music have to do with the artists themselves as much as the labels and marketing team. If artists like Luke, Jason, FGL, etc. insisted on recording better music, their labels would market it no matter what. If these guys didn't go along with trends to sell records, maybe country music wouldn't be in the shape it is right now. The direction country music has taken in the last several years to appeal to the masses is a shame.

^ Music always has and always will be cyclical. There is a certain trend right now, but at some point people will tire of it and a new trend will emerge. That is true for all of music, and it's true within genres. For country it's usually a back-and-forth between traditionalists and people who look to make country that is outside of tradition. We saw it in the late 90s and early 00s when pop-country became a thing, and now we are seeing rock-country. Things will move back to a more traditional sound, or maybe some other sound, before long.

We saw it in the late 90s and early 00s when pop-country became a thing, and now we are seeing rock-country. Things will move back to a more traditional sound, or maybe some other sound, before long. For me it's not so much about the sound (I love rock country), but more about the lyrical content. I'm fine with a variety of sounds and I enjoy when artists don't allow themselves to be confined to a box about how their music "should" sound. (Except for rap/hip-hop country. That trend needs to die immediately.) That said, I'd like for country radio to play more of a variety of songs. The biggest issue I have with country radio right now is 90% of the songs all sound the same. I can barely differentiate the male artists from each other. Many of the artists seem to be making practically the same song over and over again. I'd like to see more creativity within the genre, and more PDs willing to take risks with newer artists and edgier songs. I hope you're right about the cyclical thing. I wish I knew when this current cycle is going to end.

I still can't get over Carrie's performance. I'd never seen Carrie delivered such confidence into her performance like that

I just can't wait for album #5!!! She is going to blow everyone away and continue to make CMA voters look stupid for snubbing her for years, especially EOTY.

I hope she starts recording right after TSOM because you know her voice is incredible right now because of all the singing and exercising [of the voice]. She's probably training better alongside those Broadway singers, too.

Weird question but does anyone have contact information for Brian Mansfield, I'd love to shoot him and e-mail with some questions. I doubt I'd hear back, but it's worth a try...

If you go to the USA Today website, you might be able to find it somewhere on there. Just a thought.

She's performing at the Opry on December 13. Her tenth appearance there this year.
And I've been noticing a lot of praise for her singing in that "The Sound of Music" promo around the net. Like she's even got the approval of the Broadway World gurls. It's nice to see!

Nice comments from this interview with the actress Ariane Rinehart who is playing Liesel in TSOM on working with Carrie. Also, looks like we'll be getting a "making of" documentary a week before the airing!

I think it's smart they are releasing that teaser, a making of, the soundtrack, etc. ahead of the live airing. There are a lot of people wary about this production of TSOM, so I think getting the message out that it's more like the play is important. It's also good to start getting people used to Carrie in it, as opposed to Julie Andrews.

Sophia Anne Caruso, who plays Brigitta, also has wonderful things to say about Carrie on her twitter:
Sophia Anne Caruso @b_on_broadway 2 Nov @carrieunderwood you are so real, and kind. I feel blessed to know you. #rolemodel pic.twitter.com/gufFWKWmDz

‘BLOWN,’ TWO BITS: Kelly Clarkson isn’t the only Idol collecting a new No. 1 (or two) this week. Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away is old enough to make its debut on the Top Country Catalog Albums chart and it enters right at the top, giving Underwood her 69th Billboard No. 1. Also charting on the Catalog survey is Underwood’s first album, Some Hearts, which is up 25-24 in its 324th week. www.hollywoodreporter.com/idol-worship/american-idol-charts-kelly-clarkson-654592

The BA album looks like it will get a significant increase this week. It's still holding in the 20's over-all on iTunes:
Blown Away (album)#26
Blown Away (song)#119
See You Again #142
Two Black Cadillacs #210
Good Girl #274

How old do albums have to be to chart catalog now? I thought it was 2 years old.

She's the most exciting thing about country music since they put Faith Hill out to pasture. How can 2 weak, characterless voice singers like Miranda & Taylor beat out the ravishing Carrie? A tragedy!

I understand the concern from Carrie fans with the Female Vocalist snubs. I think it's a combination of factors that have already been mentioned...she started winning too soon out the gate, not quite as critically acclaimed as Miranda and not quite as commercially successful as Taylor, voting blocks, etc. I might place more emphasis on the first as I see parallels with Reba in that regard. Reba won her first 4 CMA female vocalist awards from 84 through 87 but her album and ticket sales would grow exponentially after that for the next decade and her radio hits would match or exceed as well. Year after year, she was in the top 5 touring sales in country with the next female trailing far, far behind. But she had already been awarded 4 years straight and the voting had shifted to less emphasis on commercial in that category. When you look at the following stats, you scratch your head at how she did not manage to win (and that's how I felt at the time as well.) (Recreating stats is tough. I tried to use the singles peak during eligibility periods, album sales reflect what the album went on to sale, and I used the entertainer nomination to give indication of concert sales and overall presence.)
88 – KT Oslin – Platinum, #13, #1 Reba – Platinum, 2 #1s, #5, Nominated Entertainer
89 – Kathy Mattea – Gold album, 2 #1s, 1 #4 Reba – Platinum, 3 #1s, Nominated Entertainer
90 – Kathy Mattea – Gold album, #10, #2, #9 Reba – Platinum, #4, #7, #2
91 – Tanya Tucker – Platinum album, #12, #2, #2 Reba – 3X Platinum, #1, #3, #8, Nominated Entertainer
92 – Mary Chapin Carpenter – Platinum album, #2, #14, #4 Reba – 4X Platinum, #2, #1, #1, Nominated Entertainer
93 – Mary Chapin Carpenter – 2X Platinum album, #15, #4, #11 Reba – 3X Platinum, #3, #5, #1, Nominated Entertainer
94 – Pam Tillis – Platinum, #16, #5, #2 Reba – 4X Platinum, #1, #7, #5, Nominated Entertainer
95 – Alison Krauss, no album, #3 on tribute song, #7 on duet Reba - #2, #1, #2, Nominated Entertainer
So I'd like to think and hope that Carrie would one day win it again but Reba never has to this day. But if it's any consolation, she was still scoring hits almost 2 decades after the other winners had long since dropped off of radio and I think Carrie will be doing the same.

Well, at least Reba was being nominated for EOTY. It's ridiculous that Carrie has NEVER even been nominated for EOTY in her 8 superstar years.

It's annoying that Carrie gets snubbed but these types of awards is all politics and if Carrie doesn't want to kiss ass that is fine. It won't hurt her musically or commercially

I truly am over the perpetual snub that is the norm for Carrie from the CMAs over the past few years, but as someone several pages ago posted, I can't help but wonder if she is being overlooked for not being "too country" enough considering she is essentially only played on country radio. For instance, on her latest record, 3 our of 4 singles are straight POP/Hot AC songs, rather than country ones, IMO ('Good Girl', 'Blown Away', and 'See You Again', and I LOVE her last 3 singles). Thoughts ?

^^ Playing devil's advocate: Taylor is commercially one of the best things ever to happen to country music, since she did start as a country artist, has the largest fanbase, single/album sales, touring sales, etc. from any country artist (and virtually any genre artist) in the past decade and may have brought some of her fanbase and spotlight onto the country genre as a whole. Additionally, whether or not you agree, Taylor is consistently more critically acclaimed than Carrie and her country singles are as "country"-sounding as Carrie's from her last era, IMO. I don't believe such things should be criteria for awards, but I wonder how the voting crowd sees things. Perhaps, Miranda's more traditionally country (less pop) sound is more appealing to these voters ?
