What I've done is awarded songs points based off of their Hot 100 rank. 100 points go to #1, 99 to #2... and 1 point goes to #100. This chart starts in the beginning of December so we can use it to predict the year end hot 100. I beleive this is actually how billbaord calculated their year end chart some time ago. I'm also working on 2011's, and when I'm done I'll combine them so we can see the entire chart life of hits that stretched across years like We Found Love. We'll also see how hits in different years stack up to each other. One asterix on the chart indicates the song charted on the Hot 100 this week, two asterix means it was in the top 10. (The only current top 10 song not in the top 50 is Turn Me on at 63.) Top 50: Rank | Artist, Song | Points | Updated? | 1 | Rihanna Featuring Calvin Harris, We Found Love | 898 | ** | 2 | LMFAO, Sexy And I Know It | 890 | ** | 3 | Bruno Mars, It Will Rain | 887 | ** | 4 | Flo Rida, Good Feeling | 861 | ** | 5 | Katy Perry, The One That Got Away | 854 | ** | 6 | Adele, Someone Like You | 838 | * | 7 | Jay-Z & Kanye West, Ni**as In Paris | 831 | ** | 8 | Maroon 5 Featuring Christina Aguilera, Moves Like Jagger | 829 | * | 9 | David Guetta Featuring Usher, Without You | 814 | * | 10 | Gym Class Heroes Featuring Adam Levine, Stereo Hearts | 810 | * | 11 | LMFAO Featuring Lauren Bennett & GoonRock, Party Rock Anthem | 804 | * | 12 | Big Sean Featuring Nicki Minaj, Dance (A$$) | 782 | * | 13 | T-Pain Featuring Wiz Khalifa & Lily Allen, 5 O'Clock | 772 | * | 14 | J. Thank you, this is a cool idea. Will be interesting to how similar it actually is to the official Hot 100 year-end chart.

That's how Fred Bronson used to compile lists in his Hottest Hot 100 Hits book before adjusting the points values. Billboard also uses an inverse point system for all-time lists and all (and had done so for year-end lists before BDS and SoundScan info came into play).

And that point system gives different weights to different eras which is how The Twist (3 weeks at #1 and going to #1 twice) can be the #1 song of the Hot 100 era
Without the weights, everything that hit #1 after 1991 would be at or near the top

^I know- thankfully Billboard had the foresight to alter the methodology.

When I'm done with 2011 (hopefully by summer), I'll have an idea of how accurate this chart will be.

When I'm done with 2011 (hopefully by summer), I'll have an idea of how accurate this chart will be. Thanks for compiling all of this! I know it would be such a pain to do this, but if you're going for accuracy, you could always do what BB does and add the song's points. It still would not be 100% accurate, partly due to the unavailability of streaming data and partly due to not always having sales numbers, but we do get Mediabase numbers every day and the digital tracks chart is posted most weeks, so it would not be an impossible task, just a painstaking one. Keep up the hard work!

Your welcome. :)
In addition to not reliably getting sales, since sales (and audience too I think) go up over time, more recent songs would do better. I'm not sure how much of a factor it would be over just a few years. Either way, I don't think I'd have the time/patience to calculate the actual chart points.

It's impossible to add points without weekly sales information and airplay from Nielsen. Even using Mediabase, the weekly 1 or 2 million difference accumulated through 20 weeks would result in a more significant difference in the overall points.
The inverse point system is the best we can do. And it is time consuming -- I tried it for one year then gave up. So, yeah, thanks a lot for doing this.

Rolling In the Deep at #33. Freaking crazy. A song released in 2010 on the top 50 of the 2012 charts (so far anyways).

I have been tracking YTD songs performance this year (and past few years) using approx Sales and Radio impressions. I try to be as close to BDS as possible on the basis of Billboard airplay rankings and figures directly available on Billboard.
After this week I will be posting YTD rankings along with sales and Airplay, as there will be 13 weeks in the Billboard year. Maybe we will name it Quarter-end charts or Winter charts. :)

Rolling In the Deep at #33. Freaking crazy. A song released in 2010 on the top 50 of the 2012 charts (so far anyways). Yeah, Rolling in the Deep has been epic. Personally, I'm more impressed at how well Party Rock Anthem is doing. :'( I have been tracking YTD songs performance this year (and past few years) using approx Sales and Radio impressions. Brighter Than the Sun and Turn Me On enter the Top 50 of this chart, while It Girl and Fly leave it. Thank you both so much for these charts! It looks like your methodologies have produced fairly similar charts. It will be interesting to see just how similar they end up come year-end.

From I what I've done with 2011, the biggest overperormers have been Dynamite and F**k You, which tells me that those songs that have a long life after their peak overperform.
Basically, the inverse rating scale gives one less point for each chart position down, but sales/spins decreases fairly quickly once you get out of the top 10. That means that there is an area in the chart where songs are awarded more points per spin/sale.
For most songs that won't matter, but there are a few that have insane lifetimes in this area of the chart after their peak (IGAF, Dynamite, PRA) that will get overestimated.
The inverse of this is songs that rise and crash rather quickly (like HIAM) will get underestimated.

Its a quarter through the chart year (well, a week ago it was). I belatedly realized it would be a good time to do a Hot 100 Artists chart. Edit: Chart changed to reflect rules for features. Rank | Artist | Points | 1 | Adele | 3542 | 2 | Drake | 3189 | 3 | Rihanna | 2657 | 4 | Nicki Minaj | 2338 | 5 | LMFAO | 2312 | 6 | Bruno Mars | 1604 | 7 | Kelly Clarkson | 1566 | 8 | Flo Rida | 1485 | 9 | J. Cole | 1470 | 10 | Lady Antebellum | 1427 | 11 | Katy Perry | 1380 | 12 | David Guetta | 1368 | 13 | Pitbull | 1243 | 14 | Gym Class Heroes | 1210 | 15 | Lil Wayne | 1104 | 16 | Taylor Swift | 1081 | 17 | Gavin DeGraw | 1078 | 18 | Jessie J | 1057 | 19 | Toby Keith | 1032 | 20 | Luke Bryan | 1026 | 21 | Selena Gomez & The Scene | 1008 | 22 | Glee Cast | 998 | 23 | Coldplay | 982 | 24 | Tyga | 963 | 25 | Big Sean | 891 |

How are you calculating the artist's chart above? I only ask because an artist like Drake would only get partial credit from Billboard for all of his charting hits due to the amount of features. Also, why are you so mad about Drake being on top?

Also, why are you so mad about Drake being on top? For this, I count songs with features entirely for the main artist, how would the points be split according according to Billboard? Also, I'm not really mad that Drake is on top. Just annoyed that Adele got blocked.

Billboard posted that the act with the main credit gets 70%. And the remaining 30% is evenly split between all featured acts.
They also have rules concerning "duet" credits and "&" credits; but I forget those off the top of my head and cannot find the article.

For now, I'll count duet and & credits as a 5/5 split (or a .35/.35 split if there's also an artist featured). I've updated my chart to billboard's rules.

I think We Are Young will end up snatching We Found Love's wig for the year-end #1.

Personally, I think Somebody I Used To Know has a better shot at dethroning WFL. Either way, both Fun and Gotye will be in the top 50 next week.
