Sounds a little pop-ish to me. Not only that, but it sounds like it has the exact same theme as "Cowboy Cassanova." A little disappointing she takes a year off and comes back with a lead single about warning a girl about a no-good guy...we have heard this before, Shania stomps and all.

Wow, why don't we wait until we hear more than 30 seconds of a song to decide how we feel?
But I see your point, since there certainly aren't any other pop-sounding songs on country radio, and all of the songs are different themed. Also, every song by every single artist has a different theme--no artist ever sings about the same theme!

Also, every song by every single artist has a different theme--no artist ever sings about the same theme! That didn't seem to be his point, though--he was just talking about this song for Carrie; he never contested that she was the only one that stuck to a sound theme. I'm pretty underwhelmed by the clip, but I do like the quick, note-changing part right at the end of the clip. I'm curious to see where that leads musically, it's a catchy little bit. Judging on 30 seconds is premature, but it does sound strikingly similar thematically to CC, and I sort of thought after she got married and had yet another fabulous era, she'd sort of change her tune, or at least broaden her scope. The album could have more of that, though. First singles tend to be safe from every major artist.

The point seemed to me that the song was going to be "Cowboy Casanova" part 2. And we don't know that yet. We've heard 30 seconds of the song, and all we know is that it seems to have a similar theme.
All I'm saying is that it's kinda silly to judge the entire song just yet, or the direction Carrie's heading in after taking some time off. We have no clue what the rest of the song or any of the album sounds like.

^^Yea, I wouldn't want to criticize the beauty of a new car when I've only seen the tires. I might prematurely think where the car is going, but I can't. I'll wait until the entire song is released, then I can judge whether it's great or just another song we've all heard before.

^That could be true. I just don't think they present the best basis for much criticism. The full story is yet to be revealed.

I actually hope they promote this at other formats this time around. I'm sick of Carrie being overlooked by fans of other genres, and losing out on sales/awards. She deserves to be heard everywhere, and I hope Carrie and her team realizes the missed opportunities they had with Cowboy Casanova and Undo It, and hopefully they change things up this time around. As much as I want this to happen, I don't think it will. We'll have to be satisfied with a #1 on country radio.

He's only saying there's a double-standard that people often use in the case of preview clips, which is a valid point.

Why do so many people want Artists to change what's working well for them? Lady A is Pop sounding, Keith Urban is Pop Sounding, etc. It works for them and so far it's working for Carrie. I personally think "Before He Cheats" is the best song she's ever put out and would love to hear more of the same, but I have liked everything she's done so far.

I'm in perfect agreement with the 'double-standard' But in regards to the 'implication I'm not so sure. Here's the sequence:We have 3 different posters express less than favorable posts about GG. This is followed by a post suggesting people withhold their judgement until the entire clip is heard.. Then we get the post about double standards? I don't think the implication being made is that far fetched at all. I know that this board is a multi artist board so it's conceiveable that fans of one artist will post on boards of other artists, perhaps even artists they dislike and/or artists they see in direct competition with their favorite artist...that being the case the implication I suggested is not so out of the question. And yes this is my opinion.

O.K. people. When we get the FULL song, we can make comments then. Everyone is getting a little defensive over a 30 second clip (which I have not heard yet-I would prefer to hear the FULL song). Let us make peace now!

I just meant to point out that fan bases tend to get very excited over clips--myself included--and can become instantly fond of them and start making fun predictions for its success; but that exact same clip cannot be used to suggest the quality is poor or weak and/or that the song will not have success without facing scrutiny and defensiveness from fans. To be clear, since many seem to be on the defensive already, this is across all fanbases on Pulse and is not limited to "Good Girl," Carrie, country music, or anything else that might get some of your panties in a bunch. It's just an observation. However, no one likes a constant detractor, so I have every intention of bowing out of the thread at this point.

It sounds good.. but I'm so over her Shania-esque sound, and wanting to be a faux rocker chick.

There is something to be said for artistic integrity, as countryhistorian pointed out; top 40 radio wasn't about to touch 'Cowboy Casanova' anyway, let alone 'Jesus, Take The Wheel', so to assert that she missed out on 'other opportunities' (whatever they are) with that single or any of her other hits makes little sense.
If any artist release a song or songs which goes to #1 at multiple formats, such as the extraordinary Adele did in 2011, then that's wonderful.
Jhomes87--Thanks for that tidbit regarding the CD's release date.

This is the only song of Carrie's that I personally have ever compared to Shania. I don't think any of her previous songs sound anything like Shania has or would put out. Cowboy Casanova included.

OK, I didn't mean to stir up the Carrie faithful. I guess in the year off I forgot how quick many of the Carrie fans on this board are to just attack any kind of negative comment about her. Point of my post was you'd think with a year off she would come back with something really fresh and career-defining, and not what the clip makes sound like is the exact same theme as her previous lead single. I never said it was a bad song or that I thought it was going to flop OR that I wouldn't ENJOY the song...it's totally possible to enjoy a single but be disappointed because you expected and wanted more. Apologies to all offended, though you are offended for no reason.

Half the time it seems Carrie is "too pop" for country and "too country" for pop. It's lose-lose. So as long as the song is good, I don't really care which side of the coin it leans towards.

Reba said it best when she was asked about pop country vs traditional..."There is only 2 kind of music, good and bad, and I try to stick with the good." Thats where Carrie stands too I believe.

This all over a 30 second clip.
Imagine what will stir up with a full track... FORGET THAT, full album!?
Yikes.

Something tells me that Her team will send this to Pop radio AFTER it reaches # 1 in Country They didn't do it for BHC. They didn't do it for CC. They didn't do it for UI. I don't think that they'll do it this time around, either. However, as it's been emphasized before on this page (LOL at all of the scuffle, by the way), it's a 30 second clip, so maybe it will be, and we just haven't heard the song to its full length to make the judgement that it has a strong possibility of being marketed over there. As of now, though, I'm not going to get my hopes up of Carrie or the label when it comes to promoting to Pop.

I always had a bit of a problem with this quote. I know what she means, but who then solves the question of what is good music and what is bad? It's still subjective.

^^When a song is bad, people generally know it, throught sales, critiques, or just plain common sense. Grant you, there have been songs that won grammys that left people shaking their heads. So, yea, it is subjective. People either like a song or don't. Even country listeners would say they like Rolling in the Deep, even though it was never played on country radio. Reba was right, there are 2 kinds of music, good and bad.
Carrie seems to thread the needle in her material. That's why she gets selected to perform The sound of Music, the national anthem, duets with Randy Travis, Tony Bennett, and crossroads with Stephen Tyler. Imagine that.
She's the one that decided her songs would NOT be remixed to pop or other genres. She wants it that way. And still, she gets to play around in all those genres. Imagine that.
She will always be critized for her songs. But, imo, those critiques will come from the extremes. "She's not country enough, she's not this or that". The middle of the road listeners are her fans. IMO, That's the way she wants it.

^^ I agree with all you said. Carrie is to be envied (along with Sheryl Crow and a few others) in their reach and utility. I can't wait for Carrie's album.

the problem with middle of the road music is exactly that - middle of the road. its neither compellingly good, or laughably bad. in other words, its forgettable. its just...there.
thats how miranda was able to overcome carrie in terms of music/song quality. miranda took major risks, some good, some bad, let her music be influenced by something else other than pop. while carries play on just stayed on the same course and path. it was comfortable. it was safe. its a third album and we can call it a day. some even argue that instead of getting better from carnival ride, it got worse.
i too was hoping for another sound for a lead single considering she took more time off than she usually does. its not exactly cowboy casanova part 2, but i can understand how some people may hear it that way.
personally, i was hoping for a midtempo sound, kind of like wasted. that said, im looking forward to how the whole song would sound.
