I really like it but this is the least Country song I've heard from any Country Artist in a long while. even compare to Lady A's Just A Kiss? Taylor's Love Story? Red Solo Cup? Sugarland's Stuck LiKE gLUE?

Yeah, those sounded still Country to me and didn't have the rock n roll feel of screaming vocals this song has. I like the song, but it's not one of my favorites from Carrie.

I'm a huge Carrie fan, and couldn't care less about what genre the song fits into. But even I will admit, that all those songs mentioned above sound more country than this lol.
Like I said earlier, this is more pop/rock. I could definitely see Kelly singing this, or maybe even someone like Pink.

Carrie could actually have a crossover like Shania did with "Man I Feel like A Woman" and "That Don't Impress me Much." I can't believe how Shania-esqu this song is! I love it!

Katy Perry? Now you know that's a lie.

I heard the Shania in the preview clip, but I'm getting a really fresh vibe from the whole thing. It's country meets rock and pop. Musically, it's very pop/rock. Vocally, there's quite a few country moments in there. The lyrics and her vocals are fierce.
Carrie's pretty much her own genre. And it's a genre I absolutely love.

Country's an extremely accomodating format among current-based music formats; no wonder it's been either first or second in total listeners since 1992, when 'Achy Breaky Heart' exploded in an identical manner as what most of us expect out of this megasmash-to-be.

After less than 2 hours of a release, it's already #11 on iTunes Country and #82 on the all-genre chart. :o

People who don't like Carrie's rock side won't be huge fans of this one, and that's okay. Everyone has their own preferences. The great thing about Carrie is her versatility - I'm sure there will be countrier and quieter moments on the album to go along with the rockers.

Strong execution in a direction that isn't my preferred one for Carrie or for country radio. I'm glad to hear growth in Carrie as a singer and a writer, and I can understand choosing this as a statement song after she has spent some time away from country radio. The lyrics have some punch (I particularly like "his lips are dripping honey/But he'll sting you like a bee") and generally scan well on the melody (the very last line before the first two choruses being the exception).
Carrie's choice to roughen up her vocals in parts of the song is probably not going to work for everyone (works fine for me), and while I haven't agreed with comments that she "screams" in prior singles, she is obviously doing some of that here on purpose. That and the overall volume of the track will probably going to make for a higher burn rate for this song at country radio, though the hookiness of the song could compensate for that. Apart from the start of the first chorus, the overall presentation of Carrie's voice is probably the best I've heard it in a studio recording -- her voice crackles with energy, and I've always been a fan of the depth in her voice, which comes through nicely here.
I'll agree with the chorus here that this isn't very country -- I feel like there's a bit of it here and there in Carrie's vocals, but there is less of an effort to bridge country and other genres here than there has been in her previous singles. I hear some steel guitar on the chorus, but it is buried and I'm not altogether sure that it fits in the first place. "Good Girl" is mostly a rock song (I don't even hear much pop in it), though it's one that I have a hard time identifying with anyone other than Carrie.
My preference would be for Carrie to release songs that favor the natural country cry in her voice, so I'm obviously hoping that "Good Girl" isn't an indication of the overall orientation of her album. As disappointed as I've been in the direction that several of country radio's core artists have gone with recent albums, I would like to see Carrie use her position not to deepen country's departure from its roots and what makes it distinct from other genres. I believe that Carrie's best work has showcased her genuine country sensibilities, and my hope for her upcoming album is that she will take the opportunity to push country forward with country-hyphenate music (i.e., country-pop, country-rock, country-gospel, country-folk) while retaining some hallmarks of the country sound. To that end, I hope that "Good Girl" is on the outer sonic edges of what her album has to offer.
I think "Good Girl" does a good job in showing Carrie's development of a distinctive style, and it is probably her most well-executed sassy co-write. I like seeing her progress and I like that she is trying to do something interesting musically. I just want to hear something more country from her.

Like Stuck Like Glue is more reggae / country Love Story is more poppish/country even Jason Aldean's song (i forgot the name) has the rap kinda type. So i think Carrie's like Rock/Country

This is growing on me fast already. I'm so happy that I'm enjoying it more with each listen. Those are almost better than the songs you love instantly, because the growth is such a rewarding experience.

I do agree with the rest of your post and am not going to suggest that Good Girl is a bad song, despite it being far from what I typically enjoy.

I will be taking a nice long drive tomorrow just to blast this song and sing it at the top of my lungs a dozen times. Unbelievably catchy. Unbelievably impressive vocals. Unbelievably great production. Perfect.
This is totally Cowboy Casanova, pt. 2. But it is totally in another league than CC lyrically and especially vocally.

I have never really had an issue with the production on Carrie's songs in the past (I tend to like loud music, anyway), but I do like how crystal clear her vocals are on this track. On Cowboy Casanova, it almost felt like she was fighting to be heard over the music in some instances. But on this one, despite it being a rocking song, it never feels like she's fighting with the production, but working with it. It fits nicely.

Good post, Dudley. I love the song as well, but am more excited to hear the album and see what else is on it. Hopefully it gets her back to a more "country" sound, at least a bit, and really shows some growth and versatility.
While I agree this isn't too "country" sounding, you could say the same about Jason Aldean's "My Kinda Party" (very much a rock song) and the heavily pop-influenced songs "Somewhere With You" by Kenny Chesney and "Felt Good On My Lips" by Tim McGraw. And all of those songs were BIG hits. My favorite artist, Keith Urban, does a lot of stuff that's not particularly "country" sounding but he's done very well and I love his music.
Country music consists of a wide variety of musical styles. I love traditional stuff as much as the next person but "Good Girl" is a great song to jam to, and I'm going to enjoy hearing this one.

This reminds me of Shania Twain. I really like the pop/rock influences and Carrie sounds great on this.

Me likes! Me likes! I like how there are 3 or 4 melodies going on in the song. (I think melody is the right word.). For an up tempo, the lyrics are solid and I like the edge in Carries vocals. It's probably my favorite up tempo from her since Cheats. Carrie obviously grew up on country and rock so when she's not doing more traditional country, I like it when she infuses her rock influences.

Dudley, you always seem to express how I feel when it comes to Carrie, yet you put it so much more eloquently than I do.
I did not listen to any clips before listening to this song. I'm glad I didn't because although I had read that the song had a rock flavor, this song took me off guard. I can hear a slight country sound in certain parts, but in other parts, I can't (Sbp17 is right about the 3 or 4 different melodies part).
Although I agree with Dudley that I am hoping to hear some country sounds on this record, I can't help but instantly love it. Carrie's voice is really piercing through strongly. As others have said, I'm loving the fact that the production doesn't seem to be fighting with Carrie on this song. It's actually working with her. I'm hoping this will be a trend on this album.
Carrie's shouts may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I love them. I love when she does rock covers because I get to hear it. On this song, she's blaring them out! When I heard the bridge for the first time, I couldn't help but smile really big! Damn!
The lyrics are really solid (miles better than her last uptempo, Undo It, "you stole my happy"). The chorus is stuck in my head. When it comes to Carrie, I usually tend to pick out something about her songs that I wish was different. However, I honestly can't find much fault with the song, even though it's not very country (If I had to choose one fault, it is that the bridge is not long enough!) It is what it is, and I think Carrie hit a home run!
I think this was an outstanding choice for the lead single because I bet it's going to literally rocket up the charts, and with Carrie's album coming out on May 1st, that's not too far away. I could see the song being #1 by then (assuming it does, but I feel really confident it's going to). I do agree with Dudley though that I could see this having a quick burnout rate with a second single being released in late May or early to mid June.
I definitely can't wait for the album now. If this song is any indication, it's going to be a bang.
