Etta would've disagreed. Yeah, didn't Etta say she couldn't stand Beyonce? Etta loved Christina! That's why her family invited Christina to sing at the funeral, not Beyoncé....

"Etta funeral brings out UNBELIEVABLE Christina Aguilera performance" The funeral for the late great Etta James, who died January 20 at age 73, was held yesterday, and the list of attendees read like a who's who in Hollywood -- particularly the music industry. Reverend Al Sharpton officiated the private ceremony at the City of Refuge Church in Gardenia, California, where he read a personal note from President Obama which stated,"Etta will be remembered for her legendary voice and for her many contributions to our nation's musical heritage." Other celebrities present at the sad occasion were Christina Aguilera and Stevie Wonder, both who performed.
It was a somber event, and Etta is clearly going to be missed by all. But it was Aguilera's moving performance of "At Last", which she actually regularly includes in her concerts, that stole the show.Check out the video.
It can't be easy to perform one of your idol's most well-known songs at her funeral, but Christina nailed it, singing with love, grace, and respect. It was beautiful, and totally didn't seem like a "look at me, I'm a celebrity" moment. And, wow, what an honor it must have been to have been asked to perform. Christina told People, "Etta wasn't just any performer, she was a strong woman whose talent came from a place so deep it moved people in ways they never felt before. Losing her was, to me, like losing a part of my soul."
The impact Etta had on the music industry -- and Christina-- clearly is indelible. And although the world is a bit darker without her in it, her legend will undoubtedly live on forever. Especially if Christina has anything to do with it. Nice job, girl.SourceReview: Christina remains unbothered by the negative people trying to take away from such a power moment for Etta & her family. She must feel extremely humbled that her family asked her to sing one of Etta's most ICONIC songs at her funeral and I'm sure Etta would have been extremely proud. Dismissed.

I figured it would mostly be men claiming it was blood too lol. I guess when you don't live with having your period personally you don't really know what it looks like. And most of the guys here don't know the first thing about vaginas.

"It isn't every day that an artist can meet the person who inspired them and their career. Not only did I have the incredible opportunity of meeting my idol, the legendary Etta James, but to be aked by her family to perform at her memorial was so very touching and yet bitter sweet. Etta wasn't just any performer, she was a strong woman whose talent came from a place so deep it moved people in ways they never felt before. Losing her, to me, was like losing a part of my soul. I can only hope that she felt the love in the room as we all came together to pay tribute to her and celebrate her life as a person and as an artist. She will be deeply missed and I thank her family for allowing me such a great honor." --Christina Aguilera

That's disgusting, and her outfit was just as disgusting. I'm surprised Etta didn't come back from the dead to remove her ass off the stage.

Oh, good Lord. Will you just listen to yourself! No go look at her pictures! Who shows up to a funeral like that?? So she has big boobs. So what? She looked fine otherwise. Etta herself wasn't exactly known for being the classiest woman, especially as she got older, either. She gave a decent speech and sang "At Last" the way she has always sang it. What's the big deal?

Damn girl, did she really have to sing like that at a damn funeral? She was going for the resurrection of Etta James! I think Beyonce would have been the appropriate singer to honor her with that song. I grew up in the Pentecostal church so that was nothing to me. Most singers in the churches I have been to sound as if they are trying to resurrect Jesus himself, even at funerals. @ LPL shutting down these haters - ALWAYS. Seriously though, you saw all those Bruthas and Sistah Gorls in the audience, looking so worked up that they needed to be fanned? They know. You don't have to appreciate Christina's style of singing but most of the Black people I know say "Oh wow, that little white girl can REALLY SANG!" That's disgusting, and her outfit was just as disgusting. I'm surprised Etta didn't come back from the dead to remove her ass off the stage. Way too early in the morning for the Post Police to break out the Billy Club so I'mma let you mince on by with that remark and let my deputies handle you, as they have been. In the future, though, K.I.S.S., ok? Next time I won't be so nice.

Christina Aguilera Covers 'At Last' At Etta James' Funeral (VIDEO) Etta James' recent passing has lead to some of music's leading powerhouse voices covering the blues. First, Kelly Clarkson paid an AH-MAZING tribute with her rendition of "I'd Rather Go Blind." And this weekend, Christina Aguilera delivered with her version of "At Last" during Etta's funeral.
The clip begins with Christina offering a heartfelt confession about the impact Etta left on Aguilera's own musical career. Then, the Grammy winner closes her eyes and begins belting out the opening notes to one of the most stunning renditions of "At Last" we've ever heard. She channels her inner Etta and embraces a raspy, raw expression, closely resembling the intensity of the original. Christina reminds us that she can still hit and hold any note she damn well pleases and does it so flawlessly that she brings the entire audience to their feet.
We've definitely never been to a funeral where people openly cheer and offer a standing O -- then again, we've never attended a funeral where Christina Aguilera was performing. We think Christina did the classic song justice, and we think Etta herself would agree with us.MTV Buzzworthy

There's a difference between good runs/melisma and bad runs/melisma. There's also a difference between genuine soul and forced soul. That's all I have to say in response to that performance. Not sure if you liked it or hated it but I loathed it. As always it's just too much when it comes to her singing. It's so incredibly overwrought that it's just simply annoys the hell out of me. It could have been incredibly simple and sublime and instead she tries to make it into some huge showboat of a song. I absolutely hated it.

As expected, amazing reviews everywhere but Pulse Everything looks great for a comeback except for what she looks like :/ I'm actually always surprised by this. I remember reading an article on EW about her anthem and it said that, other than the botched lyrics, it was a good performance. I know people have different tastes and opinions, but she was actually flat throughout that performance. She has put in several fantastic performances over the years, even recently, but it seems that a lot of bloggers/critics/reviewers have decided her voice is supposed to be amazing and always say the same thing about her performances, even when the actual quality--to me at least--has varied considerably in recent years.

Wow, that is disgusting that she would wear that to a funeral. I feel bad she had her period though, but give her props for fighting through it! And a rosary in her boobs? that is horrible. Every media outlet I hear talking about this are bashing her.

It's definitely "in" to hate Christina's guts, don't get me wrong, but the universal praise she's getting at every turn is baffling to me as well. At this point, I think some of it is just out of pity and in loving memory of the icon formerly known as Xtina.
I get that pointless runs and showboating are her thing, and while it can't and won't click with everyone, it's still acceptable in most cases. At the funeral of Etta James, I can see why Christina would perform it as... herself, but at the same time I feel like it should've been more of a tribute to James. You have to come to a point where your realize toning it down for the sake of simply showing diversity and fluidity in your vocals, or just for the sake of not being an egotistical bitch, isn't discrediting yourself or your vocal stylings; Christina just doesn't seem to know how or when to do that. Sometimes it's appropriate, others not.
I'm relatively indifferent to her, but I do think she has some solid potential as an artist. While it's possible that it's too late to really bring that to the table and it mean something, I'd still like to see her get her shit together and stop trying so hard.
