Do you think Jack will change AC radio?
Jack plays most of the songs that AC radio plays, but without the repetition.
The AC airplay chart moves extremely slow. Will Jack change this? Will AC radio expand their playlists?
Or is the Jack format just a fad?
Discuss.

I don't think all Jack stations are AC-based. The current songs that my Jack station plays all seem to be from the Hot AC format.

AC is one of the most popular formats despite slowness. Most markets have an AC station in the top 3. (Palm Beach has 3 in the top 5). I don't see Jack taking them over anytime soon.

If anything, I think Jack will have more of an impact on Hot AC.
There's no Jack station here in Tampa Bay, but the Hot AC has "Whatever Weekends", which is a step in that direction.

I doubt Jack-FM will ever replace the "your at work listening station" feel of AC radio. It plays songs that are a bit too hard for that.

Jack is pretty much a hybrid of hot AC and classic rock, so I don't think it will have much impact on AC. I do, however, think in markets where there is a variety hits station, some mainstream ACs may add songs not typical of the AC format so as not to seem "boring" compared to variety hits stations.

Jack FM may not overtake AC overall, but it beats ACs in Dallas, Ft. Collins, Indianapolis and Jackson. In Salt Lake City, Jack beats KOSY, but is far behind KSFI, but their ratings, along with KOSY, are down. In Austin, KBPA, a variety hits station known as Bob FM, it's the #2 station overall, bested only by country KASE.

That's what has happened in my city. The mainstream AC station has added more 70s and 80s rock songs not played before. Although Jack is closer to Hot AC and Classic Rock than AC, if it pulls listeners from AC, they will respond in kind (more with the addition of golds, rather than the addition of currents, so this should not affect the AC chart).

Ratings for Philadelphia just came in and WBEN-FM is within striking distance of WSNI. WSNI is an oldies-based AC station.
Variety hits formats actually could have an impact on oldies-based ACs. KEGL Dallas has fallen behind Jack.
To answer Chris' question as to whether Jack/variety hits is a fad, it's too early to tell. It may take another six months to one year to figure out if it's here to stay or not. What'll really tell the story is how Jack does in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. The L.A. trends came out yesterday and Jack (KCBS-FM) rose to #12 overall in the market and 7th overall among English-language music stations in the market, so it doesn't look too shabby.

We got a "Jack" station here last month (actually "Mike-FM") and I don't really like it. In fact, I heard many complaints from people who want Star 93.7 back. They eventually were forced to hire one of the old DJs back for the morning to appease listeners.

Philly's Ben-FM leans a little softer than the typical Jack station, so I wouldn't be surprised if WBEB and WSNI take a hit as Ben rises. Ben has to be softer to protect its two sister rock stations.

Milwaukee has 2 hot ac stations, no AC station. WKTI plays tons of 80s flashback for most of the weekend. WMYX just started about a month ago "whatever, whenever" on the weekends. Our AC station went all 80s rock last year, and I'm loving it!

I listened to both WKTI and WMYX when I was in Lake County, Illinois this past winter and both are good hot AC stations. I suspect that both stations are doing those weekend specials in response to WQBW, which has done well in the ratings so far.

Doesn't the AC format target older audiences compared to Hot AC/Jack? I don't think Jack-typed stations will take over the AC stations since Jack-typed stations tend to play a wider range of music in terms of genre, whereas AC stations play AC music?
