I don't know if all the songs on Control are brilliant. But, while not as good as the singles, "You Can Be Mine" and "He Doesn't Know I'm Alive" are fun filler.

While Control is her most consistent work for me (afterall it's only 9 songs compared to her lengthier subsequent albums), I wouldn't rank any of the songs among her absolute BEST (maybe "When I Think of You")

Control is ranked notably higher than RN 1814 at Acclaimed Music, which compiles loads of critics' best-of lists. So, yes, Control has enjoyed more success on critics' best-of lists. ^At Acclaimed Music (which hasn't done an albums-list update in a year and a half or so), RN1814 is held in a higher regard than Control.

RN has not fared as well as Control on best-of lists/album ratings- that is a fact, one which will not change with the next albums update on the site.
I'm sure there are individuals who prefer RN over Control (yourself included, Visions. :) And, again, note that the Control singles have fared better on best-of lists, too- though "Rhythm Nation" will be added to the AM site with the next update.
The songs list will be coming later this year, per Slant.

Wow, Sign of the Times at #11.
Of course Madonna's LAP is her highest ranked.

That's a rather "low" ranking for Sign O' The Times, given its best-of history.

So the 7 albums Prince had a hand in were his own Purple Rain, 1999, SOTT, and Dirty Mind, plus albums from the Bangles, Cyndi Lauper, and Madonna. I'm a little surprised SOTT ranked lower than 1999 but I guess 1999's influence on 21st century electro-pop gave it the edge, despite SOTT's critical acclaim. Still, happy to see Prince get 3 of the top 11!

I could see Thriller being #1 from a mile away. And although I'm not sure I agree that it was the best, it was definitely the BIGGEST album of the 80's.

Funny to see two albums by REM there... Murmur is, again, so high only because it's their debut/breakthrough. Document is much better album.
Also regarding Jacko, Thriller is a must have obviously but I prefer Bad to it. Or maybe I've just overplayed Thriller, don't know..

I personally think Purple Rain should have been chosen over Thriller as I think it's a stronger album, but I can understand why the latter was chosen.

Is Slant also doing a singles list? They did one for the 90s singles last year, but no albums..

With regards to the 90's list: What a brave list to not just hand Nevermind the top spot. I'm pleasantly surprised to see a lot of albums I own on this list. Also love seeing female artists getting recognized in such a major way, as often times I feel like they get the shaft on similar lists. noticeably missing for me though, is Jagged Little Pill.

These lists are all subject to the opinion of the writer I suppose. Prior major lists of this type, measuring critical appeal (not commercial) has had London Calling at the top

Umm, as one who was THERE in the 80's how does one leave off Def Leppard's Hysteria from the list?
REgardless of how one feels about Def Leppard especially in the later years, one usually appreciates Hysteria, and if not HYsteria, at least their OTHER diamond album from the 80's Pyromania.
Hmmm, yep, hate the list. For that reason alone, although looking at some of the albums on there, I don't think I would mesh too well with those that picked them.

It's not just one critic/writer compiling the lists that end on up the AM site, unless it's a big-time critic like Robert Christgau, Dave Marsh, etc. So it would be writers. ;)
London Calling is in the top 10 at the AM site, so it's appeared on loads of lists. It's been No. 1 on fewer lists than you may think, though.

You are probably right. I was referring to "major" lists that get wide publication such as Rolling Stone

The RS 80s list would be one of those that LC came in at No. 1. Others include Treble's Best Albums of the 70s and Q's 50 Best Albums of the 70s.

The Best Songs of the 1980s list has commenced. www.slantmagazine.com/music/feature/best-singles-of-the-1980s/321Madonna and Prince are tied for the most entries, but it's not yet known how many that is. ^Neither have appeared on a slew of lists (esp. PP, being a sixth single), so it's nice that they're even present.

For me, Janet's 2 best songs in the 80s are What Have You Done For Me Lately and Nasty.
I didn't start appreciating When I Think Of You until recently.
The Please Principle is also a personal fave that brings back good memories of the summer of 1987.

It's funny that Janet's biggest years on the charts were 1990 and 1993. I tend to think of her an an 80s artist.

Janet's best 80s singles for me are "When I Think of You", "Miss You Much" and "Rhythm Nation". If "Love Will Never Do" was released as a single in the 80s (it wasn't released as a single until late 1990) it would take the place of RN.
