Why this forum isn't with the Hot/Ac forum? Shouldn't Hot/Ac and Ac be in the same forum instead of Hot/Ac and Triple A and Ac all by itself? I mean even on R&R, the 2 charts (Hot/Ac and Ac) are on the same page.

I believe it was the consensus of the powers that be that "Hot AC" has more in common with Triple A than AC.

I don't see how it's hard to understand if you look at the charts.

BUt Hot/Ac is just a hotter version of Ac. I mean isn't that why its called Hot/Ac? Plus, Triple A and Hot/Ac aren't even very similar. But it doesn't matter... I don't even post a lot in these threads and i can live with it. I was just wondering.

A hotter version of AC? AC caters to fans of artists like Celine Dion and Hall & Oates. Hot AC and Triple A both cater to fans of artists like Dave Matthews Band, U2, and Coldplay.

Well I thought it was a hotter version of AC because why else would they call it Hot/Ac? But it's true that AC and Hot/Ac both cater to different fans. I never thought of it. And actually Triple A is more similar to Hot/Ac than Ac as i looked at both charts, but not by a whole lot.

That's because your assuming that the title "hot AC" has anything to do with what is actually played on the format, which most of the time it doesn't. Most stations labeled "hot AC" are actually pop stations that don't play rap, 80's/90's pop stations, or alternative stations that don't play the really heavy stuff. None of those have anything to do with AC, though some AC stations do also play 80's and 90's pop hits.

...which is why Billboard's name for the format ("Adult Top 40") is more fitting.

Yeah, there were major arguments about this when they decided to split AC and Hot AC. I think some Hot AC fans didn't want to sift through AC topics or something to that effect. Overall, though, I think the formats are different enough to warrant two separate forums.
Hot AC is a pretty bad name, I agree. I'm not sure if "Adult Top 40" is appropriate either since Top 40 implies focus on current music, and Hot AC gives golds and recurrents a lot of airplay. I would like to listen to a Hot AC station that plays all the songs on the Hot AC and Triple A charts in lieu of some of the older stuff. If the name is solely based on the type of music, I think the "Pop/Rock" or the "Light Rock" Chart would be better since on Hot AC, you mainly hear lighter rock-bordering-on-pop artists.

"Adult Contemporary" actually describes what Hot AC stations are doing better than AC stations. A "Contemporary" station should be playing Coldplay, Dave Matthews, and Kelly Clarkson, as Hot AC is doing. AC would be better renamed to "Soft Hits"

hahaha, agreed with mst3k.. this format is pretty slow and boring.. *yawn*
Triple A and HotAC have more music that chart on -both- charts, then AC and HotAC have. Only a small amount of hits on AC chart on HotAc where as a lot of songs from AAA go to HotAC.
I think its quite fitting myself... JB

AC would be better renamed to "Soft Hits" Or "Year Old Currents". ;) How about "Songs that you used to like but now hate because you've heard it enough times to last a lifetime over the past 52 weeks, Plus the latest from Phil Collins, Celine Dion and Kenny G"? That should cover pretty much everything that they play.

But isn't AC short for Adult Contemporary? Yep... but today's AC really isn't "contemporary".

Yes, one nice thing about AC is they don't tend to overplay songs daily, but hang on to them forever and ever. So maybe we should call it ARAG....adult recurrents and gold? But isn't AC short for Adult Contemporary? Yep... but today's AC really isn't "contemporary".

Hot AC is also known as 'Adult Top 40' in numerous quarters as well.
The charts for AC and Hot AC are NOT on the same page in any issue of R&R I have, and I've been reading R&R since it started.
The Hot AC charts and countdown shows were luanched in the early nineties to reach the millions of adults who started bailing out of the CHR/Po format in 1989, thanks to the explosion of country radio spearheaded by Garth Brooks, and the explosion of hard-core rap music at CHR/Pop sations, which drove tons of horrified 'soccer moms' and other adults (and their kids) from the format.
Many of the biggest top 40 singles of the eighties are staples at AC radio, and at Hot AC as well.
Both formats do play LOTS of gold from the eighties and nineties, and AC station still play lots of hits from the sixties and seventies as well.
Creating the Hot AC charts and those countdown shows, while separating them from the AC charts and countdown shows made perfect sense a decade ago, and it still makes sense today.
A Hot AC station can routinely play Prince, the Spin Doctors, Duran Duran, Gwen Stefani, No Doubt, Rob Thomas, Avril Lavigne, the Police, Depeche Mode, Midnight Oil and New Order within the same hour, and an AC station can also play a similarly wide range of artists within any given hours as well.
