Artist Spotlight:
Matthew West, who talked about the story behind his latest hit. Back when he was thirteen years old, he was sitting on the couch in his living room, flipping through the channels, looking for something good to watch, like "Saved By The Bell" or a ballgame. Instead, he happens upon a Billy Graham crusade. And, since his father is a preacher, he usually changed the channel right away when he saw a preacher, since he felt that he got enough of that in church. But, according to Matthew, he physically couldn't change the channel. God was pulling him in. His mother came downstairs and expected him to be watching sports or something on TV, but when she saw Billy Graham, she knew something was up. She asked if Matthew would like to pray to accept the Lord. According to Matt, that was the hour that he first believed.
I usually don't remember what the artist spotlight is all about, but this stuck with me, because I remember when I accepted the Lord. It was the afternoon of September 22, 1990 while on a choir retreat when I was going to college, which was religious affiliated. I wasn't too sure about going at first, since I had very little religious experience in my life, but I'm glad I did. However, even though I did accept the Lord, I didn't go to church anywhere near as much as I should have. Pretty much the only time I went to church was when the choir performed at one and between April 1991 and February, 2001, I didn't go to a single church service. I don't know what happened, but since that's in the past at this point, I guess it doesn't really matter.
At the Pulse Music Fest last year (no connection to these boards, BTW), everyone who wanted to accept the Lord was given a chance and since the Lutheran church at which I'm now a member, is a different religion from the college I atteneded (which is Missionary), and due to the big time gap in which I attended nary a church service, I felt that maybe I should reinforce my acceptance of the Lord, so I prayed along with everyone. Since mid-February, 2001, I have attended church on a weekly basis.
As for this week's chart, Natalie Grant holds onto the top spot for a fourth week in a row. But Nichole Nordeman still has a chance to take over the top spot, and so do MercyMe, who have been moving up the chart like lightning. Hopefully, they'll make it in the next few weeks and not fall short like "Homesick" (which peaked at #2, so that's also very good, but it was a surprise because, since "I Can Only Imagine" became their first number one song (since I've been keeping track of the charts anyway), it was pretty much a given that they would go to number one. Michael W. Smith also has a shot at the top, since his last few hits have also fallen a little short.
Jeremy Camp and Mark Schultz are still in a contest to see who can hold onto the chart the longest. Both have been on the chart for 30 weeks. Who knows what'll happen; near as we can figure, maybe both songs will fall out the same week. Frankly, I'm surprised that "He Will Carry Me" hasn't dropped out yet. It's been recurrent on the R&R Christian AC chart for, what, two months now? Usually, big Top Ten songs mysteriously disappear from way up in the Top Ten before they go recurrent on R&R.
