LIFE IS GOOD FOR NAS Def Jam/IDJ Rapper Should Debut at #1 with 115-125l
July 18, 2012
Nas’ new Def Jam/IDJ album, Life is Good, is his 10th in an impressive career dating back to ‘94’s now iconic Illmatic. It should debut at #1 on next week’s HITS Album sales chart with between 115-125k in sales, according to one-day sales figures provided by those music retailers who are still creating jobs, according to President Obama. The quintessential N.Y. rapper’s last album, Untitled, debuted in July four years ago with 187k in first-week sales.
Razor & Tie’s latest edition of the Kidz Bop Kidz franchise is the 22nd in the long-running series since it launched in 2001, and has proven a big money-maker for the indie. This latest in what has become a cottage industry should do between 60-65k, which is even better than the last one. Eight of the titles in the franchise have gone gold.
Fearless Records San Diego-based punk rock band Pierce the Veil, formed by brothers Vic and Mike Fuentes, has previously released a pair of studio albums. Their third, Collide with the Sky, should do in the neighborhood of 25-30k its first week.
WaterTower’s Hans Zimmer soundtrack for Dark Knight Rises look to do between 20-25k, while Fallen Sparks/RED’s Matisyahu and Eleven Seven’s Hellyeah—a metal supergroup featuring Mudvayne’s Chad Gray and Greg Tribbett with members of Damageplan and Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul—should both do in the 14-17k range.
Album sales were down 4% vs. last week, down 1% vs. same week last year and down 3% year to date.
Track sales were down 3% vs. last week, up 9% vs. same week last year and up 6% year to date.
TEA sales were down 4% vs. last week, up 2% vs. same week last year and flat year to date.

Nice for Nas! Why in the hell is Kidz Bop still selling? Why are parents STILL buying this.

It will be a drop. Not on the order of 70% like other top albums but somewhat smaller.

This is basically what I expected from Nas. Anything over 150k would have been amazing, so this is definitely par for the course.

I was hoping they'd mention Frank Ocean.
I might not get my wine and chocolates if I'm wrong about him getting an increase, which seems likely given their prediction for Nas and his sales. :(

Nas Set For Sixth No. 1 Album on Billboard 200
by Keith Caulfield, L.A. | July 18, 2012 9:08 EDT
Nas is set for his sixth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 as his just-released album, "Life Is Good," is heading for the top slot next week. Industry sources suggest that the title will sell perhaps 120,000, which should be enough to secure a No. 1 bow.
The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, July 25.
Nas previously hit the top with "It Was Written" (1996); the collaboration set "The Firm" (1997) with Foxy Brown, AZ and Nature; "I Am" (1999); "Hip Hop Is Dead" (2007) and "Untitled" (2008). The latter -- his last solo studio effort -- arrived with 187,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In 2010, his "Distant Relatives" collabo with Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley started at No. 5 with 57,000.
Nas, 'Life is Good,' Track-By-Track Review
Nas' latest might be the only title to sell over 100,000 this week. Zac Brown Band's current No. 1 "Uncaged" might fall to No. 2 while the new "Kidz Bop 22" album could start at No. 3 with around 60,000.
Frank Ocean's "Channel Orange" could retain a top five position after it debuted at No. 2 with 131,000. The set became widely available to all retailers on July 17, after a mostly-exclusive week with iTunes. Early forecasts indicate that it might sell 50,000 in its second frame. (That number will not include sales from Amazon MP3, as it is selling it for $2.99. Per Billboard policy, that is below the minimum price of $3.49 required for sales to count towards chart placement during an album's first four weeks of release.)

^ Ugh why are they doing a $2.99 sale when this album just came out? Are they trying to spark up more word of mouth? I don't think this album needs that..

My theory: Target already made its feelings clear about giving iTunes, one of the only music retailers that is not exactly suffering with its music sales, exclusive deals. Now Amazon is making its statement.

Wow I was way wrong! Unless amazon sells like 100k, which is rather unlikely.

^Have we had any clarity on how that will affect the actual sales totals?
I know that the Amazon sales will not count toward Ocean's BB200 position, but will they still be registered as part of its lifetime total?
And is this a Billboard-only decision? Will Soundscan still show a total including the Amazon numbers?

Billboard and Soundscan report to the same parent company. I would imagine Soundscan reports are set up the way Billboard needs them.
Deep discounted new albums are technically classified as "free" which are not counted either

The New Release Schedule said 104k for Nas.
50k for Frank Ocean.
75k for Kids Bop 22.
I might not be getting the NRS anymore. My buddy can't seem to be placed permanently on the email list for it.

Frank should have waited this week.
I do hope Nas wins his first Grammy for this album, though. I don't think he has much competition for Best Rap Album(aside from The Roots) and the Amy W collab may get a nomination.

Nas will debut at #1 on next week's chart, giving Def Jam two titles in the Top 5. Frank Ocean, in his first week of wide release (sans Target), is being featured for $2.99 in Amazon MP3 store. Because of SoundScan rules limiting the pricing to no less than $3.49 in the first four weeks of release, these sales will not count on that chart. Our current projection does not include these sales.
Bruno Mars may re-enter the Top 15 next week on the strength of a 99-cent Amazon Daily Deal. Phil Collins' ...Hits, currently #1 on its digital chart, and Shinedown's Amaryllis are also currently 99 cents, but are not included here because the info is not yet available. Here's how it looks going into the weekend:
*Nas (Def Jam/IDJ) 125-135k Zac Brown Band (Atlantic) 70-80k *Kidz Bop Kids (Razor & Tie) 60-65k Frank Ocean (Def Jam/IDJ) 40-45k One Direction (Syco/Columbia) 35-40k Justin Bieber (Island/Def Jam) 35-40k Adele (XL/Columbia) 30-35k Maroon 5 (A&M/Octone) 30-35k *Dark Knight Rises (WaterTower) 28-32k Chris Brown (RCA) 27-30k *Pierce the Veil (Fearless) 27-30k Luke Bryan (Capitol Nashville) 24-27k Linkin Park (Warner Bros.) 24-27k Kenny Chesney (Blue Chair/Columbia Nashville) 24-27k Bruno Mars (New Elektra) 24-27k Katy Perry (Capitol/EMI) 24-27k

No Amazon or Target for Frank Ocean but older titles continue to impact due to amazon deep discounting

I don't get how selling an old album for less than $3.49 is any different than a new album (besides the likely sales difference). If new albums under $3.49 are "free" then why aren't old albums "free" as well?

Probably the policy will be reexamined at the end of the chart year

If new albums under $3.49 are "free" then why aren't old albums "free" as well? It's a marketing tactic to move more units early on in an album's run and to secure the highest possible chart peak. If a 20 year old album goes on sale for $1.99 (and how often do we see that?), it's probably not to get the album a high chart peak.

By disallowing 99 cent sales for new albums you are actually doing the opposite. Fewer units will be moved, hence a lower peak

So a "new" album under 3.49 is considered "free" and thus does not count because it is a marketing tactic to encourage moving high units early on and have a higher peak?

So a "new" album under 3.49 is considered "free" and thus does not count because it is a marketing tactic to encourage moving high units early on and have a higher peak? The question was about why new albums below that price don't count toward the charts but old album do. My answer is because labels don't use that marketing tactic for older albums with the purpose of attaining a higher chart peak. Not sure where I wasn't clear.

It's just unfortunate because we won't get to see what Frank Ocean has ACTUALLY sold, only what was counted. Obviously, it's easier to sell an album for 2.99, but people are still putting out good money for the album.
Is there any way to see the true total? Or are all of those sales from under 3.49 just unaccounted for?

They would be unaccounted for Don't they get reported though, then are kept separate from the total sales that week? We might get the figures from the Billboard report if lucky.
