I'm not sure if this issue has been covered before (or if this is the appropriate forum for this), but I thought I'd bring this issue up.
In the past year or so, VH1 (which I used to associate with more Adult Contemporary related music) has turned into a clone of MTV, playing artists not normally played on VH1, such as Beyonce, Jay-Z, etc. etc.
What do you think of this?
Personally, I hate VH1's new programming. It used to be the place to find good music that none of the music tv channels played. It also seemed like it didn't play constant meaningless TV show. Now it airs documentaries, but then re-runs these shows repeatedly. I have no problem with some of these shows, but what they did to say... I Love the 80s, was crazy.
I think VH1 is turning into MTV3, and it's turning its back on its original goals and type of programming.

[sarcasm]YAY for more I LOVE THE 80S[/sarcasm] I like those specials but c'mon how many times will you play it?
If anything it's showing less videos than it ever has in the first place. So really VH1's turning into what MTV was not too long ago. Don't like that one bit.
This is why I hate music channels now. The only decent one now is and I can't believe I'm saying it is CTN (College Television Network, if you're lucky to get it). They play EVERYTHING! I like that.
Second, would be Much Canada. I used to get that and they played EVERYTHING too. CMT should also count for something. They play country videos every day during th week.

My problem with CTN is that they only have a few videos in rotation and they play them to death! I work right by one of those televisions, and I see the same videos MINIMUM twice in a 3 hour period. And it's almost ALWAYS the same order!!! VH1 and MTV should change their names because they are both anything but their names. Playing videos at 3:00 in the morning does not mean you are a music station. NBC played videos at 1:30 in the morning on Friday Night, but they weren't considered a music station, and they sometimes played more videos than you'd see on either of these "music" stations. My God we have SOAP OPERAS on MTV! Exactly how are The Real World, Dismissed, Road Rules, etc... music related???

I agree with you that VH1 has definitely shifted away from their HotAC format this year. I don't mind a Justin or Beyonce song from time to time but they had SnoopDog last year if a recall and that shouldn't happen. What I fear is a gradual move towards pop/hip hop leaving artists like Matchbox Twenty/Counting Crows etc with no place to show their videos at all. MTV does not play Matchbox. I know John Mayer gets played on MTV but can you think of any other artists that are regulated to VH1 only.

On my local cable service, I have: MTV, VH1, BET, CMT, and GAC (Grand Old Opery Network or something like that). Out of those, CMT and GAC are the only ones that play videos at least three hours a day - or at least between 6 am and midnight. Another thing that irks me is how MTV runs commercials saying "MTV2... Where the Music Is." WTF? MTV used to be "where the music was." If that's MTV's attitude, why don't they change their name to TTN (The Teen Network) or something, let MTV2 become MTV, and give us all MTV. VH1 used to be a lot better than MTV, and now it... isn't. And as one person said, now that VH1 has turned into a clone of MTV, a lot of great artists will start becoming neglected and won't have an outlet for their videos. I wish there was a new music network that would be like MTV was back in the day, but also play a wide variety of music. Cause most of these supposively music networks aren't cutting it.

I agree that VH1 should play more music videos. I'm sick of the same re-runs all the time. I wish they would give us an hour a night at least. You have to tape Insomniac Theatre in order to see the latest videos any more. Or sit through the top twenty with all the stupid chatter.
And MTV. Forget about it! I keep thinking of that song Money for Nothing by Dire Straits-- the "I want my MTV.... " song. That band's videos wouldn't even be played today on MTV, unfortunately.

Someone will get smart and launch a new channel that plays videos with a lot of variety. I don't understand why VH1 would mirror MTV when they are owned by the same company? Why wouldn't you try to nail down two markets instead of fighting yourself with the same demographic?

I still like VH1 better than MTV, for the most part their shows deal with music and I think they play better videos. It's not as great as it used to be, but it's better than MTV.
Isn't VH1 listed as Hot AC, MTV listed as Pop, and MTV2 listed as Alternative? I was one told this.

VH1 is a joke to me. It might as well be the sister station of E! instead of MTV. I like that they are playing videos from more genres, but they only play the "Crazy In Love" and "Hey Ya" types... as in the videos we already see constantly on MTV and BET. I always liked VH! for playing videos I couldn't see anyhwhere else, which they rarely do. Oh, but that's because they rarely play videos at all.
At least MTV is starting to play videos during regular hours again.
I would say VH1 isn't Hot AC-related anymore because it is barely music related at all.

I have the same complaint about VH1 not playing as many videos anymore...But they are playing the new Sarah Machlachlan video, and they are always playing Matchbox Twenty and Counting Crows...They are always going to be the channel for those artists, they've just changed because their audience's musical tastes have.

I can understand music related shows, but fashion oriented shows on a music network? Please! The Video Music Era died in 1998, we just never really had a funeral for it. And what's up with VH-1's countdown shows abbreviating the videos? That sucks!
I for one am sick of Carson Daily...who's with me?!!!

It's pretty bad when I'm watching BET show 80's videos of certain artists that I don't particularly care for just so I can watch some interesting videos during prime time for a change.

Right now the best music channel is probably MuchMoreMusic from Canada, which is kind of like old vh1. It plays a few non-music programs, but is very heavily video and music orientated, showing pretty good variety of old and new songs as well.
As for MuchMusic, their playlists are horrible, and when not showing pop, is showing punk-pop; which I'm getting sick of, after hearing 2351362 of those bands that are exactly alike. They have a few decent songs now and then, but thats about it.
