I've been attempting to devise a new type of format in my mind, just for kicks. After discussing how Hot AC could capitalize on its CHR roots (like WNNK in Harrisburg does), I began to think of other formats that could follow the same pattern. Let me know what you think of this format:
A Triple-A radio station with a gold catalog heavily focused on 90s Alternative. The currents would avoid new cuts from, say, Van Morrison or Paul McCartney, and concentrate on newer emerging artists and new cuts from bands that blossomed during the 90s (Foo Fighters and Counting Crows, for example). The oldest songs might go back to 80s U2, Chili Peppers, Violent Femmes, Pixies, etc. This type of format would obviously be geared more toward a slightly younger male demographic on its upper end.
My philosophy is this: I grew up listening to 90s Alternative. As that format has changed, I've become less satisfied with the constant stream of Linkin Park, Nickelback, Finger Eleven, and other bands that fail to live up to the true 90s Alternative sound. So, I look more toward the indie/Triple-A circuit for bands that embrace a similar sound.
Tell me what you think!

I'd be all for it dude. I thinkthe closest thing to it is KYSR in LA. That's actually what an alternative station SHOULD sound like despite the fact it's Modern AC.

My local Triple A station WPUP/Athens-Gainesville GA is exactly what you described...
The Atlanta Triple A station WZGC is similar to what you described, except they don't play new songs by the Foo Fighters b/c there's a competing Alternative station WNNX

I would say KENZ, Salt Lake City fits this description as well.

I would say KENZ, Salt Lake City fits this description as well. Subtract Linkin Park, Finger Eleven, Pink, Nickelback, and maybe Fall Out Boy from their playlist, and I'd agree.

There's a Triple A station that plays Pink? Or does Salt Lake City have a second Modern AC (besides KUDD)? Or an alternative station that plays Pink? Sorry...very confused...

In reality, they're a hybrid format with equal parts Triple A, Alternative, and Hot AC.

It's pretty much a Canadian Alternative and Hot AC station mixed together along with a bunch of indie stuff. Even still, w00t for Kasabian.
