As I listened to the July 4, 1991 AT40 Special "The Top 40 American Acts of the Past 10 Years", I was inspired to calculate the top American Acts on the Hot AC chart since Radio and Records started it in 1994. (Mediabase data is used from August 2006-present).
Each song by the artist was awarded points based on an inverse point system for each week on the chart (just like the method used for my calculation of the Top 100 songs). Each artist's song's points are then combined to give a total for the artist.
If I've made any errors, please let me know:
1. Matchbox 20 2. Goo Goo Dolls 3. Sheryl Crow 4. Train 5. 3 Doors Down 6. John Mayer 7. Rob Thomas 8. Hootie & the Blowfish 9. Jewel 10. Madonna 11. Kelly Clarkson 12. Lifehouse 13. Smash Mouth 14. Sugar Ray 15. Melissa Etheridge 16. Creed 17. Third Eye Blind 18. No Doubt 19. Michelle Branch 20. Lenny Kravitz 21. Maroon 5 22. Five for Fighting 23. Vertical Horizon 24. Counting Crows 25. Natalie Merchant 26. Mariah Carey 27. The Fray 28. Uncle Kracker 29. Green Day 30. Bon Jovi 31. John Mellencamp 32. The Calling 33. Fastball 34. Sister Hazel 35. Evanescence 36. Sixpence None the Richer 37. Faith Hill 38. Backstreet Boys 39. Boyz II Men 40. Paula Cole

This is a fantastic list, thanks for posting it!
Glad to see Matchbox Twenty pearched up on top, with The Goo Goo Dolls in seccond. I'm surprised to see that Nickelback is not in the top 40 yet. Another surprise is to see Train way up at #4. :o
This is really cool though and it's nice to see how 90s artists (like Jewel) stack up against artists of the 00s (like Kelly Clarkson).

Nickelback is Canadian, so that's why you won't see them on the Top American Artists chart. Train is so high mainly because "Drops of Jupiter" was such a huge hit.

Oh, I read over the paragraph too fast!! I thought you meant "American Hot AC Chart", not "American Artists on Hot AC" . As for Train, that song spent 70 weeks in the top 20, right?

at20fantoo isn't too far off from the actual top Hot AC artists since the rankings began in the mid-'90s.
Here are the official rankings of the top Hot AC artists (American and otherwise) according to Joel Whitburn's Top Adult Songs 1961-2006 book. I put a plus next to the artists that would probably rank higher if these calculations were done today because of their newer releases. 1. Matchbox Twenty 2. Goo Goo Dolls 3. Sheryl Crow 4. Alanis Morissette 5. Train 6. Nickelback (+) 7. Santana 8. Jewel 9. Sarah McLachlan 10. 3 Doors Down 11. Dave Matthews Band 12. No Doubt 13. Avril Lavigne (+) 14. Smash Mouth 15. Rob Thomas (+) 16. Kelly Clarkson (+) 17. Sugar Ray 18. Celine Dion 19. Barenaked Ladies 20. John Mayer (+) 21. Michelle Branch 22. Hootie & the Blowfish 23. Lenny Kravitz 24. Madonna 25. Lifehouse (+) 26. Maroon5 (+) 27. Third Eye Blind 28. Green Day 29. U2 30. Vertical Horizon 31. Creed 32. Backstreet Boys 33. Coldplay 34. Counting Crows 35. Savage Garden 36. Dido 37. The Calling 38. Sting 39. Uncle Kracker 40. The Wallflowers

Thanks, shocker, for the Whitburn info. I've been looking into buying and was wondering if it's good. I know the Country book is great, so I'd imagine the AC/Hot AC book is also.

"Drops of Jupiter" did spend 70 weeks in the top 20 (counting the holiday break).
The Whitburn HAC/AC book is a great reference for Billboard info. Definitely worth the $$ if you have it.
