Heard the end of the 1979 show yesterday, and then, randomly, today, heard the 1987 countdown- in particular, "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You"- on another station. :)

What is the 80s show this week? Thanks! "AT40: The '80s" this week presents 6/7/1986 ;) Also jdelachjr2002 LOL @ listing "Invisible Touch" with a Phil solo credit; some might argue that's more-or-less actually the case.

For all we know, this could very well be the last weekend that Casey Kasem is still with us. :( Sorry I haven't posted here in months since WLS 94.7 FM Chicago dropped American Top 40 - The 70's back in November 2013, however, with kudos to jdelachjr2002, your prediction of the last weekend that Casey Kasem would still be around is correct since Casey passed away on Father's Day morning - June 15, 2014. I don't know how long Premiere will still carry American Top 40 - The 70's and American Top 40 - The 80's to radio stations now that Casey has passed away, probably until about the end of this year at least. Maybe next weekend in memory of Casey there may be 2 shows each for AT40 - The 70's and AT40 - The 80's, a normal show for each, and for AT40 - The 70's, the first ever AT40 show from July 4, 1970 (previously rerun in 2007 and 2010, I guess); and for AT40 - The 80's, the last original run AT40 Casey hosted from August 6, 1988 (previously rerun in 2007, 2008, and last year). R.I.P. Casey Kasem, you kept your feet on the ground and now are reaching for the stars in heaven...

Casey's estate does not own the shows personally although they likely get paid royalties. I would think this would spark renewed interest in the show rather than force its cancelationm (much in the same way the death of major music artist does not mean the end of album releases) I understand that it got dropped by WLS Chicago last year but I have not noticed a decline elsewhere. The only real mystery about Casey's death was the day, this being the last weekend was pretty much a given(he has been "near death" for a few weeks now). He was taken off of food and water earlier this week which usually means 3-4 days, a week at the outside.

RIP Casey Kasem. :( FWIW I heard two very different Casey stylings this weekend. I'll clarify this below. June 13, 1981 LW #1: Kim Carnes "Bette Davis Eyes"40 -- Carole Bayer Sager - Stronger Than Before (30) 39 39 Billy Vera & The Beaters - I Can Take Care of Myself (39)38 -- Stanley Clarke & George Duke - Sweet Baby (19) 37 -- The Moody Blues - Gemini Dream (12) 36 -- Rosanne Cash - Seven Year Ache (22) 35 38 The Alan Parsons Project - Time (15) 34 -- The Manhattan Transfer - Boy From New York City (7) 33 -- Kenny Rogers - I Don't Need You (3) 32 35 Jesse Winchester - Say What (32)31 34 Jim Photoglo - Fool in Love With You (25) AT40 Archives: From April 1966 - The Righteous Brothers "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration", the 136th #1 of the 60s Flashback Extra: The Pointer Sisters "Slow Hand"30 32 The Pure Prairie League - Still Right Here in My Heart (28) 29 37 Sheena Easton - Modern Girl (18) 28 40 The Oak Ridge Boys - Elvira (5)27 -- Joey Scarbury - Theme From Greatest American Hero (Believe it Or Not) (2) 26 29 Santana - Winning (17) 25 17 John Lennon - Watching the Wheels (10) LDD: Firefall "Just Remember I Love You" from Victor in Birmingham, MI to Julie, who he's in love with though she doesn't know it...though he also shakes when he's around her24 -- Marty Balin - Hearts (8) 23 27 Elton John - Nobody Wins (21) 22 18 Juice Newton - Angel of the Morning (4) 21 24 Lee Ritenour - Is it You (15) AT40 Archives: From April 1966 - The Young Rascals "Good Lovin'", the 137th #1 of the 60s Flashback Extra: Juice Newton "Queen of Hearts", a week away from hitting the countdown20 22 Rick Springfield - Jessie's Girl (1) 19 21 Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - The Waiting (19)18 15 Styx - Too Much Time On My Hands (9) 17 19 Hall & Oates - You Make My Dreams (5) 16 12 Champaign - How 'Bout Us (12) 15 16 Dottie West - What Are We Doin' in Love (14) 14 20 Air Supply - The One That You Love (1) 13 13 The Climax Blues Band - I Love You (12) 12 14 Gary U.S. Bonds - This Little Girl (11) 11 08 Grover Washington Jr. - Just the Two of Us (2) 10 10 Franke & The Knockouts - Sweetheart (10)AT40 Archives: From May 1966 - The Mamas & The Papas "Monday Monday", the 138th #1 of the 60s Flashback Extra: The Greg Kihn Band "The Breakup Song (They Don't Write 'Em)"09 05 REO Speedwagon - Take it on the Run (5) 08 09 Neil Diamond - America (8)LDD: The Beatles "Hey Jude" from Maria, Chris, and Gary in Canada to their grandmother in Greece, as their way of trying to make her feel better after she recently had a fall and broke her hipbone07 11 George Harrison - All Those Years Ago (2) 06 06 Gino Vannelli - Living Inside Myself (6)05 07 Ray Parker Jr. & Raydio - A Woman Needs Love (4) 04 02 Smokey Robinson - Being With You (2) 03 04 A Taste of Honey - Sukiyaki (3)Flashback Extra: Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight"02 03 Stars on 45 - Medley (1) 01 01 Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes (1)NOTES: - This week's Station of the Week: WWIS. Didn't get around to posting it until today because I was juggling a few different things the past two days.
- Interesting how back on 4-10-82 there were 8 debuts with the highest of those also being a Hot 100 debut, whereas this time the highest debut is even higher than that but that one's not the song also debuting on the whole Hot 100.
- Just to clarify in the first LDD, Victor is still a boy. He wasn't grown up yet. ;)
- Something about the hour structure in this show is quite interesting. The 8 debuts still allow for Last Week's #1 to be played, and the final hour actually starts with #9 instead of #10 - did that ever happen any other time in 1981? That's even in contrast to exactly six years later in 1987, which goes to a straight ten countdown songs per hour - though that might be because that show had Hour 1 end on its first LDD, had Extras in Hours 2 and 3, and had #9 double as its second LDD. (P.S. I managed to hear that show yesterday as well, due to another station's bizarre screw-up. )
- Actually come to think of it, the "Hey Jude" LDD, famously six minutes long, probably necessitated bumping #10 to Hour 3 here.
- #1 on the Country chart: "What Are We Doin' in Love"
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Give it to Me Baby" by Rick James
- #1 on the Album chart: Hi Infidelity by REO Speedwagon

I have never heard the first ever show, but have fond memories of working on that sad Sunday morning in 1988 listening to Kasey, a graceful ending to run number one hosting AT40

Stations who run the 70s and 80s are also being offered a 2-hour tribute show hosted by Mike and Kerri Kasem. KOLA-FM here in Southern California will air in on Sunday. From what I've read, it features drops of Casey from old AT40/AT10 shows and has tributes to Casey from Rick Dees, Ryan Seacrest and Shadoe Stevens.

For those interested in what Casey's tribute special consisted of, here's a rundown: {Casey Kasem Tribute}Mike & Kerri Kasem open the show.
Charlie Dore "Pilot of the Airwaves" (1980) then plays.
Kerri brings us to the beginning - 1970. We hear from Mike, and it leads to the #1 song on that first show - "Mama Told Me Not to Come" by Three Dog Night.
Back to Mike, with what made AT40 so special - Casey's stories. Clip from April 4, 2009 (45 years ago that week...), with "Can't Buy Me Love" by The Beatles as an Extra from that show. Mike cites it as Casey's favorite chart statistic.
Next up: Shadoe Stevens with his homage to Casey and AT40, ending with thanks to Casey for always being there. Cue the next song: "Always Something There to Remind Me" by Naked Eyes (1983). ---------- Back with Kerri, and Casey's cartoons. Clips of Shaggy and Robin, and an anecdote that Casey would get ovations for being known as Shaggy. The next song is, oddly enough, from a cartoon movie..."Somewhere Out There" by Linda Ronstadt & James Ingram (1987) (albeit, cut in half).
Next up: "Listen to the Music" by The Doobie Brothers (1972).
Back to Kerri once again, with a story of Casey coming in and doing cartoon voices in her 2nd or 3rd grade class (she's not sure which). Mike remembers Casey's humanitarianism. Cue the next song: "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong (1967/1988).
Next up: "The Best" by Tina Turner (1989). ---------- Back with Mike remembering more of Casey's humanitarianism. The next song is "Maybe I'm Amazed" by Wings (live, released 1977).
Next up: "I Love Rock & Roll" by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (1982).
Following this is a concert story from Michael Buble of Casey's counting down the hits getting him through days of mowing the lawn, capped off with listening in one day to hear Casey count down HIS song at #1. "Home" (2003) then plays. ---------- This appears to be an optional extra...a clip from an unknown show (though probably 2009?) of Casey playing what he called one of his favorite hits - "This Kiss" by Faith Hill (1998). ---------- The second half of the show kicks off with Ryan Seacrest citing Casey as an incredible influence. The next song is "The Living Years" by Mike & The Mechanics (1989).
Kerri and Mike then talk about the America's Top 10 TV show. Next song: "Every Breath You Take" by The Police (1983), also stated as the #1 song of the 80s.
Next up is the show's first Long Distance Dedication (song: "Desiree" by Neil Diamond") on August 26, 1978. ---------- Don Bustany comes in, simply to say that Casey was loved by everyone. The next song is "I Hope You Dance" by Lee Ann Womack featuring Sons of the Desert (2000) - notably, the original song is played, not the Pop mix or AC mix. (The Pop mix simply alters the instrumental, while the AC mix replaces the Sons with female voices.) This is also cited as one of Casey's favorites.
Mike and Kerri share more childhood memories of Casey, specifically his love of baseball. Yup, that's a clue for the next song..."Centerfield" by John Fogerty (1985).
Mike and Kerri then share that Casey loved when people would impersonate him, with a clip of Dana Carvey. The next song played is "When I See You Smile" by Bad English (1989). ---------- Rick Dees gives a heartfelt homage to Casey. Next song: "On the Radio" by Donna Summer (1980).
Mike and Kerri talk more about how he would read the Long Distance Dedications that came in, and how they were always so moving. From a show in 2007, a clip is played featuring the first letter he ever received. That letter would be recorded and released as a single, "Letter From Elaine", which is also heard.
Mike and Kerri share a memory of when Casey auditioned for a stage role in New York - and how it led him to realize he needed to get outta there. Next song: "My Father's Eyes" by Eric Clapton (1998). ---------- Next is Casey's final Long Distance Dedication (song: "Thank You For Being a Friend" by Andrew Gold) on July 4, 2009. ---------- Coming up to the end...with Casey's final introduction of the #1 song (on AT10), "Love Story" by Taylor Swift.
Mike and Kerri share that no matter what happened, the love was never lost. The final song played is "Teach Your Children" by Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young (1970).
Lastly, Mike and Kerri share how Casey instilled in them the values that they carry with them today.
Naturally, the final words said (through clip): Keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars.
All throughout, there are different "American Top 40", "The Hits From Coast to Coast", and "Casey's Coast to Coast" bumpers. Now, on with the countdown... Besides Power Station's "Some Like it Hot" (LW: 37), there's: "One Night in Bangkok" by Murray Head (LW: 36), "One Lonely Night" by REO Speedwagon (LW: 31), "Crazy For You" by Madonna (LW: 30), and "Say You're Wrong" by Julian Lennon (LW: 28). NOTES: - This week's Stations of the Week: WGHN and WCRZ. The former played the tribute to Casey, the latter...why not? WCRZ opted to play all four extras, which was nice.
- In any case, this week's chart sure is a dandy - with the big drops and big jumps in the upper tier, this might even be crazier than the 70s chart this weekend. And that's no small feat. :o
- The extras in 2009 included a curveball: "Your Love is King" by Sade. "You Spin Me Round" is the only one of the four to repeat here, as the other two were "St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion)" and "Freeway of Love".
- Another one from the "Deja Vu" files: Larry Morgan sounded rather upbeat on this one; I suspect this was ready to go well in advance. Contrast that to his introduction of Casey's final regular AT40 from January 3, 2004 that's also been offered out by Premiere - definitely a somber tone there. This contrast is very much akin to Casey's own on 12-13-80 - originally upbeat introducing "(Just Like) Starting Over", then following Lennon's murder, that was removed and replaced with a Lennon tribute.
- Another week where Casey counted down the Top 5 albums: #5 - Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen, #4 - Songs From the Big Chair by Tears For Fears, #3 - No Jacket Required by Phil Collins, #2 - Around the World in a Day by Prince & The Revolution, and #1 (a new #1) - is of course, still to come. :)
- Get a load of that Top 20 - only one Top 10 miss among them, the one that's peaking this week. I know of only one other Top 20 like this in this Hot 100 era - 1-12-91, which also featured a #12-and-peaking.
- Casey's story of how "Heaven" nearly became a posthumous #1 for Bryan Adams this week has...crazy timing, to say the least.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Little Things" by The Oak Ridge Boys
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Rock Me Tonight" by Freddie Jackson
- #1 on the Album chart: The Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack

We have six debuts so six songs move off the survey this week: "My Love Is Like ... Wo" (LW: #38) "P.I.M.P." (LW: #37) "So Yesterday" (LW: #35) "Powerless" (LW: #32) "Deliverance" (LW: #31) and "Shake Ya Tailfeather" (LW: #15; moved to recurrent)
- For all intents and purposes, the positions in the "LW" column refer to the 12/13/2003 AT40 while peak positions for songs that had yet to peak refer to their peak on AT40 during either Casey Kasem or Ryan Seacrest's runs and not on the recurrent R&R chart Casey was using (Note: "It's My Life" peaked at #5 in between the 12/13 show and the 1/3 show) - Although "Shake Ya Tailfeather" became a recurrent this week, it would resurface the following week when AT40 went to an unpublished recurrentless chart to usher in the Ryan Seacrest era - The change in charts would contribute to "Here Without You" spending 50 weeks in the Top 40, a record at the time (since surpassed by Taio Cruz's "Dynamite" at 72 weeks) - For the entire duration of Casey's second AT40 stint playing three LDDs was common, what wasn't common was the fact that one of the LDDs was a song that was currently charting - For #31, Casey played bits of three previous versions of "The First Cut" by Cat Stevens (1967), Keith Hampshire (1973) and Rod Stewart (1977) before playing the rest of Sheryl Crow's hit. - As an interesting tie-in between his first and last AT40 (though Casey didn't refer to it as his last show as was the case on 8/6/1988), he played a piece of Wilson Pickett's "Sugar Sugar" (which was at #25 on the 7/4/1970 show) before playing Baby Bash's hit - For obvious reasons Casey did not mention the subtitle of Eamon's hit. - Casey mentioned that Madonna has had at least one hit song on the chart for 22 straight years which was obviously R&R's feat since Madonna never charted at all in 1988 when AT40 used Billboard's charts (either during Casey or Shadoe Stevens' run) - The lack of commercials Premiere provided for the special broadcast certainly allowed them to load up on extras - Larry Morgan noted that Kimberley Locke's record was the Hi-Bias remix - #1 Adult Contemporary: "Unwell" by Matchbox Twenty - #1 Urban: "You Don't Know My Name" by Alicia Keys - #1 Country: "There Goes My Life" by Kenny Chesney - #1 Rock: "All In The Suit That You Wear" by Stone Temple Pilots

2004 wasn't that bad. There was still alot of Rock oriented music on the charts. I remember Stacey's Mom was my favourite song of that year. The bassline reminded me of a lot of The Cars' songs.

1984 was such an epic year for music. Notice how different the top half of Billboard Hot 100, which was America's Top 40, was then compared to the crap featured nowadays. Ever wonder why half of the songs that appear in the Hot 100 nowadays, are never even played on the top 40 radio stations?

The Hot 100 was a pop chart then, now it is an all-genre chart.
