It's almost that time - time for AC (and some Hot AC) stations to 'flip the switch' and turn on all-Christmas music. There are sometimes a couple of early ones right before Halloween, some right on Nov. 1, and then others throughout the month. Let's use this topic to talk about local stations in your area that will flip the switch and when they do it. Here's a list from 100000watts: www.100000watts.com/specials.aspA station is South Jersey has already flipped!!!

Last year Miami was spoiled with 2 all-Christmas stations. 93 Rock (which flipped to Easy Listening on December 26th) and 93.9 MIA (Rhythmic AC) were in the spirit last year.

I personally don't understand why anyone would want to listen to all-Christmas programming from October. Christmas is in two months time, why? I'm surprised AC stations do it, too. Think of it this year, they spend 20% of the year playing Christmas programming. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Philly is kinda a local station (I'm in Northeast PA). A tad early for these stations, eh? Billboard's already started the Holiday Songs chart- so this week's chart (for week ending 10/16) was based on, what, one Florida station?

I like Christmas music but I hate stations jumping the gun and playing Christmas music well before Thanksgiving.

Well, I had Philly 101 on today and it's not all-Christmas (at least not yet). Why is it listed as such?

WBEB-FM usually flips in the 2nd-3rd weeks of November. My city's AC, WLEV, had an annual tradition of flipping at 6 PM on Thanksgiving but ditched that last year, as the transition came 2 weeks before.

WLIT in Chicago doesn't go all Christmas until November. Now that they are the only mainstream AC station in town, I wonder if they will wait until a bit later this year.

WLIF in Baltimore usually goes all-Christmas just before Thanksgiving (not yet sure if/when that will happen this year.) I listen to them for Casey Kasem's 1970s AT40s without having to stream online; the last few years they've played Casey's American Top 10 Christmas shows when offered by Premiere.
IMO, all-Christmas/holiday programming should not start before Thanksgiving or at the VERY earliest mid-November or thereabouts. (And going to the mall and seeing Halloween and Christmas displays up at the same time doesn't feel right either, but that's another topic.)

philliefan, a shout-out from a fellow Northeast/Eastern PA resident. :) I'm very familiar with WLEV 100.7.
RE why any AC station would change to all holiday music before Thanksgiving: In terms of audience, wouldn't that be when most listeners would be in the mood for holiday music, and not before?

Speaking of the Phillies, a station in Philadelphia (WLEV? I don't remember which) went all-Christmas at the beginning of November (or late October?) in 2008. That was when the Phillies won the World Series, and so it was explained that "Christmas came early."

If I remember correctly, an AC in Kansas City started this around 2000 and shot up in the ratings. Many AC stations jumped on the bandwagon every since.

The two stations that flipped last year both saw ratings increases during the all-Christmas blitz.
