TWENTY’S ONE Matchbox Twenty’s First New Studio Album in a Decade to Debut at #1
September 5, 2012
September winds are starting to blow.
Look for Atlantic’s Matchbox Twenty to get the back-to-school season off to a flying start, when their new album, North, debuts at #1 with 110-120k in sales next Tuesday.
It’s Rob Thomas and company’s first all-new studio album since 2002’s More Than You Think You Are, which debuted in November of that year with 178k on the way to 2.43 million in sales. The band’s last release, 2007’s Exile on Mainstream, was a double-album set which included a single disc of greatest hits.
New Interscope band, Las Vegas alternative rockers Imagine Dragons’ major label bow, Night Visions, after four EPs, should debut nicely with 55-60k in sales. The group’s music clip for “It’s Time” is up for an MTV Video Music Award in the Best Rock Video category.
Reach Atlanta-based Christian rapper Lecrae’s Gravity is in the 55-60k range, but that’s based on very limited info, with plenty of religious bookstore sales yet to be counted as the week continues.
Kitsune/Glassnote Irish rockers Two Door Cinema Club’s sophomore album Beacon looks to be in the 15-20k range.
Next week’s (9/11) release slate includes RCA’s Dave Matthews Band and Columbia’s Bob Dylan along with American/Republic’s Avett Brothers and veteran Seven Arts rapper DMX.
Albums sales were down 3% vs. last week, down 26% vs. same week last year (Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV debuted with 964k) and down 4% year to date.
Track sales were down 4% vs. last week, up 1% vs. same week last year and up 6% year to date.
TEA sales were down 3% vs. last week, down 19% vs. same week last year and down 1% year to date.

It'll be their first #1 album. Mad Season and Exile on Mainstream were their previous highest charters, peaking at #3.

110,000 for Matchbox Twenty isn't bad at all. Good for them. I love the new album. I think their label should be able to build a little buzz on that with their home HotAC stations for single #2.
I'm going out on a limb here and predicting 150,000 for Bob Dylan next week. He's been at the top at amazon for a few weeks now. DMB I'll say 190,000. They have a really dedicated fanbase and this is a Steve Lillywhite produced album.

That's great for Matchbox 20 given the long hiatus and She's So Mean is not a big hit so far. I hope it will have hits in the future to give the album good legs

Wow, another christian rapper selling more first week then Slaughterhouse did. lol. I never understtod how tobymac counted as a rapper hip hop maybe but he's much of a pop artist. That said Lecrae is amazing, he's dripping with Talent. I bought his Gravity and was blown away by it, I'd rate his talent above that of most mainstream rappers, especially on the song "confessions".

Surprised there's no mention of Animal Collective and Cat Power. Both acts made the top 20 with their last releases and I'd expect them to do the same next week. Why the oversight?

YOUR “WE’VE GOT OURS, YOU’RE ON YOUR OWN” WEAKEND CHART PREVIEW: Matchbox Twenty should debut at #1 next week with a total just into six digits—and that’ll easily be enough to give it the top spot next Tuesday. Fighting it out for #2 will be the full-length debut from rockers Imagine Dragons (an EP has been out since May) and the latest from Christian hip-hop artist Lecrae (we didn't either). Here's how the not so pretty picture headed into the weekend:
* Matchbox Twenty (Atlantic) 100-110k * Lecrae (Reach) 65-70k * Imagine Dragons (Interscope) 65-70k Now 43 (Capitol/EMI) 35-40k Maroon 5 (A&M/Octone) 25-28k Fun. (Fueled by Ramen) 24-27k Carrie Underwood (19/Arista Nashville) 24-27k Trey Songz (Atlantic) 24-27k 2 Chainz (Def Jam/IDJ) 24-27k TobyMac (Forefront) 24-27k Adele (XL/Columbia) 22-25k Lumineers (Dualtone) 19-22k Justin Bieber (Island/IDJ) 18-21k One Direction (Syco/Columbia) 17-20k * Two Door Cinema Club (Glassnote) 17-20k

A lot of Christian rap/hip-hop artists are really exploding, and no, I'm not talking about guys like TobyMac who get regular airplay on CCM stations. Lecrae's last 3 albums opened at #60, #17, and #15 respectively on the BB 200. Another Reach Records artist, Trip Lee, has opened at #193, #53, and #17 with his last 3 albums. There are some other new names starting to get big online, too.

Yeah, i didnt mean that as a diss. I have no problem with christian artists. I listen to Home.fm everynight and they play a boat load of christian artists. No rap though.
And yeah, I don't consider Tobymac rap either even though Hits does. I have no opinion on Lecrae since i have never heard anything from him.
Also, I see how Slaughterhouse will already be below 2Chainz and Trey Songz.

Really impressive numbers for Imagine Dragons. On sell everywhere for $6 does help....I like their single though so good luck to them. Matchbox Twenty's North will also open at #1 in Australia this week.

Carrie is looking to blow past that prediction. I think she might sell as much as 50k. Right now, by Billboard, she's projected to have the #4 album.
