This is a great song. It should prove to be a worthy follow-up and will easily continue their success at country radio.

I definitely prefer this to Sober if that was the other option, so I'm happy. :)

Great (predictable) choice. This has a unique sound to it, but I think it should easily be a top 5 hit, especially with all the momentum they have from "Pontoon". It should be interesting since "Tornado" should start climbing the charts right around the time "Blown Away" approaches #1.

I love Tornado. I think it's a fantastic choice for a single. It was really interesting to compare to Blown Away. They both are title tracks, both similar story lines (abuse, tornado, revenge, etc.), but totally different sound and production. I definitely prefer Tornado to Blown Away, so I'm excited that they are releasing it! Hopefully it will be another successful single for LBT.

Love the song, and I'm hoping for the best for them with this follow-up! As long as Sober gets the light of day at some point, I'm happy. :)

I really like how the woman in this song compares herself to a tornado. It's a metaphor that I think works really well. It may be similarly themed to "Blown Away," but they songs are completely different.

I'll be the first to express total indifference to this song. It's just kinda there for me. Granted, I only liked Pontoon until it finally hit, and now I love it. Same may happen here if this is a solid hit.

Honestly, I'm a little nervous about this release. I like the song and it's one of my many favorites from the album, but I'm just nervous. I hope it can at least make it to the top 10. I know I shouldn't be worried, but...it's just a feeling I have.

Ugh...it's an incredible record. I was hooked on first listen. Why are we worried? Granted I don't follow country charts but is it because it sounds so mainstream? (it does to me at least)

Nah. They've always sounded mainstream. I'm more worried about them getting mismanaged again this era, despite the single's quality. This should at least make the top 20 coming off of the hype of "Pontoon". I'm sure that I'm the only one worried here, but I've seen mismanagement or poor promotion with very talented artists occur one too many times lately. I'm not expecting this to tank, though. It should at least go top 10 here.

Great choice! This was one of the few tracks on the album that I felt could work on radio and net them another top 10. I've always felt their more production-heavy songs worked better for them.
Plus all these weather titles are definitely asking for some chart run puns. :)

I'm calling it. I expect another #1 here. I think the whole album is great and it really seems to be connecting to a lot of people. According to this post, label sources had been expecting a debut around 45k. And they are looking at 100k+. The difference between this album and all their other albums is "Pontoon". They've never had a hit even remotely close to that big. And I think there is a lot of interest in them, plus the good album reviews, that they could really break out right now. I think Capitol is really invested in them. Lady A won't have another single out for a few months it would seem, Keith Urban is also gonna be on a bit of a break. I really think "Tornado" is one of those interesting songs that's both unique and radio-friendly at the same time, sorta like "Pontoon" is. I'm not worried at all, actually. I'm really expecting this to hit big, and I just hope that it can at least get close to #1 so my prediction doesn't look foolish/crazy But, I actually won't be all that surprised if this does become a big hit. Just a hunch I have ;)

No worries here...

This was one of the songs I *loved* when I listened to the album. It has a Bonnie Raitt feel to me.

It has a Bonnie Raitt feel to me. I thought the same thing about "Pontoon" the first few times I heard it.

Karen's vocal inflections and phrasings sound similar to Maggie Rose on "I Ain't Your Mama" in parts (primarily the first verse). I'm also loving what sounds like echoed laughter (?) around 2:20. It really drives the song's sinister feel home for me. And I thoroughly enjoy the lyrics, especially the chorus with lines like "Make sure you're never found."

I'm also loving what sounds like echoed laughter (?) around 2:20. It really drives the song's sinister feel home for me. You can also hear the echoed laughter in the outro, at about 3:12 and again at 3:22. I wouldn't be surprised if most radio stations cut off the song at about 3:05 though, in that gap where it goes quiet before the mostly instrumental outro. To me, that laughter is really, really cool, so I'm glad someone else agrees. I also like the echoed background vocals of the chorus as the song begins to come to an end around 3:32.

Oh this is going to be an awesome single. I love the new album and while I think they've got a few good single choices on there this was definatley the right choice. It's sounds like a hit and I'd be surprised with anything lower than a top 10. I'm really hoping "Pontoon" has carried them high enough to become radio staples.
After this one is done though I'd like to have a non-Karen lead vocal as a single. I think it's time for Kimberley to finally get her chance at lead, so My vote for single #3 is "Sober" then have one of the guys leads next.

Just listened to this. I love this song! Musically it reminds me a bit of Don Henley's Dirty Laundry.

Available on Play MPE already. That was fast. I figured, with how big "Pontoon" was and the adds date for "Tornado" having already been set for October 1st, that they'd wait another week or two to officially send this to radio, since "Pontoon" has only just vacated the #1 spot on tonight's chart and will be getting quite a bit of recurrent airplay even into October.
I don't really think it will harm "Tornado" at all, even in the short run. So I guess it's not a big deal...it just caught me by surprise a bit. I was expecting to have to wait another week or so before this one was officially at radio.

I love Tornado. I think it's a fantastic choice for a single. It was really interesting to compare to Blown Away. They both are title tracks, both similar story lines (abuse, tornado, revenge, etc.), but totally different sound and production. I don't hear anything in "Tornado"'s lyrics that imply an abuse connection. Lines like "You're gonna see me comin' by the selfish things that you did" and "Thought you'd take a swing, try another girl, try another night" seem to point pretty clearly to a cheater (the "swing" is not a punch, but a reference to trying out a different sexual partner while in an otherwise monogamous relationship). The reason that I don't think the latter line reads "Thought you'd take a swing? Try another girl, try another night" is continuity in melody and also the "But..." that follows, which says that the shift in tone happens after the "try another night," not after "swing." I'm probably not explaining that very well. In any event, as far as I'm concerned "Tornado" is far and away the right choice for the second single from the album. Little Big Town's radio successes have generally been built on strong rhythmic grooves (one of several reasons choosing "Kiss Goodbye" over "Shut Up Train" to follow "Little White Church" was a giant mistake), and "Tornado" has the best one (as well as a couple of the best hooks) left on the album. The central metaphor and lyrics are somewhat conventional but they are also tautly rendered and scan really well against the melody. There is a sort of updated Western feel to the production that further connects the song to the country world, while the reverb on Karen Fairchild's vocal lends a sort of atmospheric feel that helps evoke the idea of nature's revenge. For me, this is another example of Jay Joyce finding a way to modernize the country record in a way that feels fresh without being disconnected from the sonic markers of the genre. The only false notes in the song for me are the prolonged "found" and subsequent "oooh" that form the bridge after the second chorus. They remind me way too much of the similarly situated "stayin' alliiii-hiiii-iiiii-iiive" in the BeeGees' "Stayin' Alive," and that's not an association that suits "Tornado" at all. The notes in that section just feel too bright and upbeat for the tone of the song. Fortunately, the "mmmm" resets the song into its rightfully sinister place. I have difficulty imagining that this song won't extend and quicken Little Big Town's momentum while also keeping their sales going strong throughout the holiday season, and I will be a little surprised if it doesn't wind up a #1 contender during its chart run.

I didn't have the sense that this song had an "abuse" theme before reading the post above, and I certainly don't now. But "take a swing" is not the idiomatic phrase for indulging in sexual variety, is it? I guess it could be -- take a swing through the available candidates at the party -- but I don't think that's ever been the usage. Of course Zazie would not be likely to have indulged in that activity, but I would probably know the vocabulary associated with it.
Correct me if you know more about this.

I've never heard it put "take a swing," but people certainly use "swing" to mean having an affair ("swinger" and all).
Anyway, this might be my last favorite song on the CD. I like it, but it's sort of just there. I thought "Sober" would have made a great second single.

I absolutely loved this song in concert but was a bit disappointed with the album version. Still a great song but it lacks some of the dramatics they perform it with.

Fantastic song...LBT is just amazing, no other way to put it. I think this is a good follow-up to Pontoon, and I think it should do well. I'm hoping for another #1.
