I'd love to see the specifics for how this was weighted. Same here. Is this an official list from Billboard magazine? I know there's only 8 years of the 90s represented, but I feel like there are far too many newer songs on this list! Not surprised that "Iris" is #1, but shocked that Real McCoy is at #2!! I also figured that Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn" would've been in the Top 10. Surprised it's not. |

I can't believe Pink doesn't have a song and the 3 leading ladies don't have more than one in the Top 20...yet Kelly is at #4...weird!

Bow to the only solo female in the top 10. And the only solo artist to have more than one song in the Top 40. Unless I am missing someone, it appears that the only other artist/group to have more than one song in the top 40 is Goo Goo Dolls and 3 Doors Down. Kelly's #4 overall placement in the Billboard Top 40 Mainstream artists for the past 20 years is ultra-impressive to me as she only had 10 years to qualify. The most impressive though is Rihanna with #1 placement in only 7 years and also Katy Perry with #6 placement in only 4 years. Time will tell if newer artists on that list, such as Katy Perry (#6) or Lady Gaga (#11), will be able to replicate the longevity of Britney Spears at #3 (13+ years), Pink at #2 (12+ years), or Kelly Clarkson at #4 (10+ years). |

But this is counting the early 90s so this list is extremely odd. Mariah needs highers than #5.

A majority of Mariah's pop #1's came from 1990-1992. If only pop radio didn't backtrack on her between post-"Butterfly" and pre-"We Belong Together".  |

How is Mariah not #1? Something's fishy If this was from 1990, Mariah might have been number 1. Post 1992, Mariah "only" had 6 number 1's and 17 top 10's. If the list had gone back to the beginning of 1990, though, she would have 14 number 1's and 25 top 10's. It's easy to see the female dominance on Top 40. The top 6 artists are female, and 22/40 overall are female with an extra two featuring female vocals (Black Eyed Peas and No Doubt). Interesting to note that there's only one country crossover artist on the list, Taylor Swift. Also interesting to note that Beyonce, Justin Timerberlake, and Fergie essentially appear twice on the list. |

Thanks for posting. If it went back to, say, 1983, we probably have an idea who would come out on top. But, a No. 10 placement for late 1992-present is pretty darn good. Including The Bodyguard era, Whitney Houston scored six top 10 hits on the Mainstream Top 40 chart. Of course, if we went back to the 80s, she'd rank favorably. |
