What about Brandy and Monica "The Boy Is Mine?" I think I disagree with this list, but I like the pick for #1.

I'm surprised "The Sign" isn't on there. It was #1 for 14 weeks, more than any other song.

I'm normally 100% behind Billboard's decisions, but this list is not cool.
Madonna's Take a Bow, I Will Always Love You, One Sweet Day and The Sign were far bigger on Mainstream Top 40 than this!

Yeah, the more I look at this list, the more I realize it used some really effed up weight system.
There are some MAJOR hits missing from this list. I find it ridiculous that Jason DeRulo "In My Head" beat out songs like "Kiss From A Rose" or "That's the Way Love Goes."

I was expecting to see "Dynamite" on that chart. This. Didn't it spend 60 weeks on the chart? That's from Seacrest. This is a real chart. ;) I'm not at all surprised Another Night is so high. It spent 37 weeks in the top 20. Glad to see Leavin' made it. The song was in the top 40 for 7 months.

That list gives Kelly a total of four songs to chart from Breakaway. I think that makes her the artist with the most entries from one era, no? :o

The CHRonicler
9 FROM THE 90s THAT ‘BUTT’RESS TOP 40 ROTATIONS
Goo Goo Dolls’ 1998 hit “Iris”—the No. 1 song in the 20-year history of Billboard’s Nielsen BDS-based Mainstream Top 40 chart, as revealed in Monday’s Top 40 Update—played on just nine mainstream top 40 stations last week. In fact, of the 28 songs listed on that top 100 to hit during the 1990s, only one, No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak,” still gets respectable play every week at the format, with 81 stations having spun it last week. “Don’t Speak” isn’t the only ’90s song with a significant presence at top 40. Eight other hits from the decade have generated 2,000 spins or more in 2012 and shown up consistently week to week: the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Hypnotize” and “Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems”; Puff Daddy’s eulogy to Biggie, “I’ll Be Missing You”; 2Pac’s “California Love”; Usher’s “You Make Me Wanna”; the Fugees’ “Killing Me Softly”; Sublime’s “Santeria”; and, bringing up the rear, Sir Mix-a-lot’s “Baby Got Back.” So why these nine? After all, just three (No Doubt, Usher and Fugees’ hits) were top 10 mainstream hits in their day, and two (“Hypnotize,” “Santeria”) didn’t chart at all.
A few theories as to why:
• Most are progenitors of today’s hip-hopinf luenced pop. As such, they’re at home next to Flo Rida or Nicki Minaj. WHTZ (Z100) New York music director Jagger concurs, “When you play these bet ween today’s hits, they still sound like they belong.” • Most are timeless—some literally. Five of these nine run on samples of songs from the 1970s or 1980s, while “Killing” is a remake of the 1970s hit. KNHC (C89.5) Seattle PD JB McDaniel says, “These songs were anthems. Playing a well-known song is always preferable to playing a marginal hit as a recurrent.” Jagger adds, “Everyone can relate to the chorus of ‘I’ll Be Missing You,’ and ‘Baby Got Back’ always tests with all age groups. It’s fun and a nice weekend spike.” • Most benefit from having not been big mainstream hits the first time. Edison Research VP of music and programming Sean Ross says, “Often the longest-lasting songs are ones people felt they never heard quite enough, which certainly describes ‘Hypnotize,’ ‘California’ and ‘Santeria.’ They also all have a life off the radio as eternal jukebox songs, including with listeners who wouldn’t have been old enough to hear them on the radio anyway.” • They may be in the rotation by default. Ross adds, “Most of these got grandfathered into the format when stations were playing more oldies and doing more library testing. These days, most stations don’t have the same ability or impetus to see what other older songs might still resonate. When current music is this hot, there’s no need to go back for oldies.”
Just the same, I like that top 40 has still got “Back.” And I cannot lie. •

Im surprise One Sweet Day is not there considering it had 11 weeks #1 on that chart. We Belong Together had the same amount of weeks at #1, and it made the list at #36? This is just plain weird.

I'm confused as to how Billboard compiled this list. Kelly Clarkson and Maroon 5 each had more songs (4) on this list than any other artist. But P!nk came in at No. 2, and she didn't have any songs on the chart?

"Iris" is a pop classic. I feel like some 90's hits are missing, but this list is great, all of these were major pop radio hits.

musicfan- P!nk apparently had a stronger overall performance than either of those two.
Something else to keep in mind: Some eras were weighted differently, as noted in the explanation.
